You do realize you have just violated the NDA you signed when you hired in at Radioshack...

What really amazes me is that it looks like you used your real name.

Been nice workin with ya...

i dont work at the shack so what does NDA stand for?...just curious?

Since the phone is on the shelf ready to be sold and I am showing the world what the phone is, i didnt violate anything...

Now if it was hidden away in a locked room and only I saw it then took pictures and leaked them out, then yes.

It's on Sale now??? That's interesting. Or does it go on sale on 4/23???

If it is currently on sale then you didn't violate, If it's not on sale untill 4/23 you did violate.

Ready to be sold is NOT publicly released. Posting pictures, specs, and pricing prior to PUBLIC release is a direct violation of NDA.

So if I came to your store tonight I could have bought one??

You say if it was in a locked room and you took a pic... if it's not on display to the public IT IS in a locked room.

JasonKnight

you can come to my store and purchase it as of 11:00am 4/20, as soon as it arives in my store, it is for sale.

when did i say 4/23???? it is a radioshack exclusive for all Sprint Kiosks, R-Solutions and Radioshack. and it went on sale today. since i took pictures of it after it was released to the public i did not break any rules.

This phone is not even an upgrade from my 4500

no its an upgrade to the 2300

It appears I was mistaken (read WRONG) about the NDA. First time ever tho...NOT.

No hard feelings I hope.

It's not meant to. The MM5600 was the upgrade for the VM4500. This is an entry level camera phone.

i'm not 100% sure about the Kiosks, But at coporate stores as soon as we get phone we put them on display and we sell them. They gave us price tags for the 3100 and LG 350 last week. The only time from what i've seen of when we wheren;t able to sell phones right away is when we switched to cingular and they sent us all the phones early

I just bought two SCP-3100's. Great phones, of course they don't have bluetooth or that many features, but good little cheap/free phones. I was wondering if anyone knows of a cable that will work for this phone. I want to hook it up to my pc via USB. Thanks!

Me and my mom both got the same phone, just different color. The camera is great and it takes good pictures. The phone has an external antenna so it works pretty well. I seem to get good service anywhere I go. The OS, im guessing you are talking about the settings and navigation, I like because it is easy to use. I like all the graphical features. This phone also has walkie-talkie capability using R-Sync and it is very good. Phone is small in size and fits in pocket well. I have never had an internet capable phone before, but I must say, the internet is slow. This is in response to your request for "speed of vision". I got a 1month trial for internet, and when I load really small pages that are like < 2KB in size probably, it loads extremely...slow. One page for instance, for my ring tones, had simply 15 links to ringtones, and took about 15-20secs to load. That is one con, but again, never used internet before. There is yet another, worse con in this phone, that I have noticed actually tonight after using it. I am going tomorrow and trading in our phones for a different shipment of the SCP-3100's from a different store, so that *MIGHT* be the problem, so don't take my problem for factual. The problem is, the receiver earpiece, the main function of the phone for me, doesn't work worth anything. It is EXTREMELY hard to hear anyone, and it sounds like they are talking in the background, even when they are up close. I had two SCP 3100's talking to eachother, volumes maxed, and you could barely hear one another. I know on a speaker phone sometimes it goes in-and-out occasionaly, i.e, a loss of sound here and there. Well the speaker phone is actually great, but the earpiece has this problem. I lose sound left and right. Also my friends say the voice cuts in and out, so there must be a problem with the voice receiver. I verified these problems on both phones. It seems like Sanyo spent way too much time putting all the goodies on the phone and they can't even get the freaken earpiece to work. Again, it *could* be the shipment, but I will confirm this by going to a different Sprint PCS store tomorrow. Ill update this tomorrow night/afternoon and let you know how it went.

Before my trade-in, my rating of this phone is a 6/10. It is probably a good phone for free, but I wouldn't pay the suggested $48 for it.
When I go to Sprint tomorrow, I might just totally switch to a different company, if I find a better phone I like, but for now, I would say buy a different phone.

I got my g.f. a pink 3100 a few days ago. I haven't used it enough to form firm opinions and do a full review, but have played around with it as well as had one 15 minute phone conversation using it. Just for background, I use an LG 125 and had a a620 before that. Here are some of my thoughts on the 3100 so far:

Reception: excellent. Sanyo's reputation for reception has finally been proven to me (I have never used a Sanyo before). The 3100 initiated and held calls with ease in an area of a mall where the lg125 and a620 could barely, if at all, connect a call. If the 125 or a620 did connect a call in this area, it was extremely choppy with lots of drop-out. The 3100 had a totally smooth connection.

Sound Quality: based on my one 15 min phone call with it, the sound quality is normal/good with nothing quirky or annoying. I am aware of the scattered complaints about Sanyos sounding muffled, but the 3100 sounded fine to me. The volume definately goes high enough - I used the lowest setting.

Camera: typical quality for an average cell phone camera (ie not very good). However, like other cell phone cameras, you can get decent shots if the lighting conditions are favorable. I find that you can get some cool, kindof artsy shots from camera phones as a result of the imperfections in quality.

Speaker phone: I only tried it briefly with *4. It is quite loud. It gets distorted when turned up loud, however the lower volumes are louder than most speaker phones. You can carry on a phone call on speaker phone with the flip closed.

Miscellaneous: I haven't found any settings or menu options that are out of the ordinary for a sprint phone. It seems to be a stable, solid phone. I haven't noticed any bugs so far. The keys light up green.

There are 4 things that I find to be slightly weird:
1. If you close the flip while in the menu system or using the calculator or something, the phone does not exit back to the main screen. The external display says something like "Operating" (I forget exactly what it says) and when you open the phone you will continue where you were.
2. The external display goes blank and dark when the flip is open (unless camera is on)
3. If you do not have RL enabled, there is a dedicated side button and soft key option on the main screen that are used activate the voice memo feature.
4. When on a call, the key pad lights turn off and the screen dims, but the screen doesn't go totally dark.

thanks for the review

as far as the "4 things that are weird" they really aren't that weird because they're characteristics of sanyo phones, even my 9000, for years now.

I called Costco last week to see if they had or were getting them. The wireless lady at my local Costco said they were getting another phone in but did not know what one it was. Does anybody know if they are going to be getting this phone? If so any dates?

Picked my 3100 up from RadioShack last night. So far, I really like it. OS is okay, but nothing special. They only had silver, so I didn't get to see the other colors.
Trading up from a nasty old Nokia::
Some comments:
I've not had any earpiece problems as previously mentioned
Great reception: I live in an apt. building and didn't have luck with the old one, 3100 no problems
Big old warning sticker on the back about putting your finger on the antenna, whatever
Camera is okay, at best
Ringtones on the phone are very limited, I'm not impressed
Screensavers rank with the ringtones
Speakerphone works excellent, I have to turn the volume down
I don't find the option for both vibrate and ring at the same time, it's good in a bar or at the racetrack to have both, maybe I am missing something
Battery seems to hold up well
Voice dialing, don't know that it is worth it really, but it is amusing and works

So far, I'd recommend it. I don't need BT and camera isn't something I need either, so for me, its great, and that probably goes for others who just need to talk.

ringer and vibe should be there, use the side volume rocker while in standby and you should be able to change the ringer volume. you can ring at either level 1 or level 4 I would assume since it's a sanyo.

Ahh, I didn't try it up on level 4, level 1 wasn't cutting it.
Now I'm happy! TYVM

Welcome to Sanyo. :) You'll grow to love these features rather than find them weird. :) Well, all except for the screen bit... that can be good or annoying.

Is there an advantage to getting the Sanyo 3100 over the Sanyo 8300 (they're in the same price range at my store)? I know the 3100 is newer but does the 8300 have more features and is the voice quality better? Please help me decide.

james2K
05-11-2006, 09:21 AM
yeah 8300>3100 for sure

8300 has these features over the 3100:

video cam w/flash
higher resolution screen
color sub-lcd
Streaming media capable
plays AAC ringers (loud and clear)
changable 'accent' plates

There's probably more, but those are the features that would make me choose the 8300 over the 3100. The 3100 is a newer version of the 8200, as they both have similar features but the 3100 is stripped even compared to the 82. Hope this helps.

Yes, that greatly helps. I am now wondering if I should upgrade to the 8300 from the 8100 or wait for the 8400? However, I really only use vision to access my AOL mail (which I'm having problems doing and need to figure out a different way to get in other than portals). I could really use SMS on the 8300 (8100 just has short mail) and if the earpiece is improved on the 8300 (8100 is soooo bad sounding especially to another cell phone, landlines are okay) then I'm sold. I guess the 8300 would be an improvement, then huh?

james2K

8300 is probably fine, 84 will supposidely add BT and EVDO, possibly card slot. Still hard to say. The earpiece has gotten better on Sanyo phones since the 8100 so I think you will notice a difference with the 8300.

If you like it, get it. If you play the waiting game for a phone we haven't seen pics of yet it could be a very long wait with your old phone.

Check this ALWAYS PINK 3100 on ebay. It's sad that whenever a new phone drops a few idiots shell out more than what the phone's worth. When the winner of this auction goes to sprint to get it activated, phone book swap, accessories, etc and see the actual retail price they may start crying :hee:

Especially the phone book swap, because they don't have the software to do it yet. My print out was 9 pages long and I have to enter them all by hand now!

you were able to get a print out of your phonebook?

I know the thread has been quiet for a bit, but I picked up 2 of these phones on 5/12 and thought I would contribute something incase anyone else out there wanted to get one... So far, they are ok (it's hard for me to get used to since my last phone was a blackberry!)

Reception: Is OK at best, the signal inside my house is marginal, but when I step outside it goes up. I get almost no reception at work, I am not the only one, so I don't complain about it (even though my nextel that I just gave up got marginal signal).

Camera: Not bad, I took a few pictures and they came out OK, I did the picture mail thing and sent a few to my wife. Not bad for an entry phone.

Navigation: Easy to do, I wish there was a simple rocker key for the entire call history instead of having "Incoming" and "Outgoing". I find this to be a very useful thing. The settings are easy to find and change.

Call Quality: Very good, crisp and clear and it is easy to understand people. The speaker phone rocks and I find myself using it more.

Battery Life: So far, so good, I always charge my battery at night, and so far I have been lasting with 3 battery bars all day long (even while it's at work constantly searching for a signal.

Overall Impression: For an entry level phone, it's not bad, I already have my eyes on a Treo or the 6700, but for my wife and I to get service started with Sprint, it was a good way to go.

Ring Tones: Kinda lame, I am not into the fancy ring tones, so I set mine to the simple ringer with the voice that says "Incoming Call"

I can't comment on Vision since I cancelled it without trying it.

I hope that helps people who looking at this phone...

I find it amusing that I'm not the only one with the "ring ring, incoming call" tone. The preprogrammed ones aren't too hot. In the car I missed calls because they blended in with the stereo.

The phone is still working well for us. I think I'm going to keep it, I kept my eye on the 15-day return policy just in case.

One other thing I don't see on the phone that I'd like would be for it to record the amount of time each call was. Right after you hang up, it shows, but when you scroll through the memory, it doesn't say. I like to know how much my son talked to his friends, after all he's 14!

And something I just found last night I liked was the picture caller ID. Cute little feature my old Nokia didn't have.

I forgot to mention that another handy feature on this phone (I am not sure if this is on other Sanyo phones) is the ability to dial the last 4 digits of the phone number and hit talk. It then looks it up in your address book and if there is one entry with the last 4, it then dials it for you, if there are more than 1, it shows you the names that match and then you can select.

This is very helpful for me when I am driving ;-), this might replace Voice Command!

I hate that none of the Sprint phones show the call duration. Even on the Treo you have to install a hack that gets it to show in the call logs.

Since the phone is on the shelf ready to be sold and I am showing the world what the phone is, i didnt violate anything...

Now if it was hidden away in a locked room and only I saw it then took pictures and leaked them out, then yes.

He's got a point there. If anything he's advertizing... I signed the same NDA working for an actual Radioshack. Now you wanna talk about a violation? That would be the person that took pictures of the Katana Powerpoints. Thats a nice way to say goodbuy to our jobs. My store was one of 481 to close across the nation, if you havn't heard already, so I don't care at this point, not being a RS employee anymore. There could be big lawsuits though if you leak something they arent ready for yet, though. Just remember, if they're willing to show everyday store employees, it wont be long before it reaches the general public anyway. I don't mean to sound ignorant in saying that, don't get me wrong, NDAs are nothing to mess around with. But, for the most part, the likelyhood of a company acting on them to the fullest extent of the law is minimal.

Got a question, I think I might go get this 3100...I really liked the 8300 but I know I wont need all the bells and whistles....I just need a strong phone with a loud ringer, good reception, somewhat durable (I am a PE teacher/Coach...tend to get rowdy at school)...do you think RL will ever be matching up with nextel in the future?
The 3100 sounds ok for me, if I am renewing my sprint account and getting a new phone do I have to get vision..? (so I can snag a free month)...I heard there are no good ring tones on this phone....just curious.

james2K
06-22-2006, 10:16 PM
coachpelkey, the 3100 sounds like a good phone for you. the standard ringers are loud enough, it gets pretty good reception, and it's a sanyo so it'll be durable.

RL will never interconnect with DC, technology limitations...

You should get a month free of vision for buying a new phone and renewing your contract, in fact you have to.

--------------------------------

I just won one of these phones in a sales contest, and activated it yesterday for the heck of it. Here's a review:

Screens: Main screen is decent in size and resolution. Fonts are sharp and adjustable in size (phone number entry, text entry, phone book view, etc). The color is fairly washed out. Contrast is adjustable. It's ok for what this phone is meant for.

The sub-lcd is a HUGE improvement over the 2300, which I used for 4 months while recovering from financial ruin. Adjustable font is nice, you have the option to have the time only with a large clock view, medium size date and time, or small date and time. Orange is the only color available.

Reception seems fair, I had both the 9K and the 3100 side by side and the 9K would show a few more bars, but bars mean nothing (and the other phone was a 9K). I would think sanyo phones are calibrated the same, it's too bad there's no way to test db's with the 9K. Battery should be solid, the 2300 was very good in that regard.

UI & Display: This phone has standard animations for signal search, outgoing call, and standby. Just nice to have I suppose. There is a 3X3 menu available which is an improvement over the 2300. Everything else is classic sanyo, nothing different that I noticed. Still has a favorites menu on the left navigation key.

Camera: Not wonderful. VGA quality with very saturated looking color. There is no flash, but a mirror for self-portraits. Holds 33 pictures in camera at VGA quality.

Vision: Decent.

There is exactly 1MB of memory for downloads, and barely any supported content right now from sprint aside from ringers.

This isn't a bad phone, but I've been using a 9000 for the last 6 months. I really like the espresso color on this one, never really seen brown color phones before. It's ligher and *slimmer* than the 2300/8200 phones.

I hope this helps somebody in purchasing decisions.

You recieved an instant rebate correct? Every phone I sell, new or upgrade, I HAVE to add Vision with 1st month free. Most don't want it or get upset. I would try calling CS or going back to the store where you bought it.

I went to Sprint because I had dropped my 8200 and the camera is not working and the hinge is broken. Well aside from waiting an hour and a half for them to tell me it cant be fixed and I need a new phone, I have to wait 5 days to get it. They didnt tell me what phone I was getting but I looked at the receipt and it said REC SANYO 3100 BLUE HANDSET. So is this the phone I am going to get and is that the correct upgrade from the 8200??

Of course I have a SCP-3100, what is the easiest way to get a picture from my PC to the Phone ? BitPim doesn't work (it tells me the image has been written successfully to the phone but I can't find it anywhere on the phone). If I counld get the image to "My Picturemail" on Sprint's website then I could download it....but I don't know how send it from my PC to the website. Or...is there another option ?

james2K

you can send yourself a picmail from the website then download it to your phone, and you should be able to browse your online albums as well. there's an option to view them in the pictures menu i believe.

Edit: The picmail website has an upload option so you can upload photos from your home computer.

I just switched to Sprint. I had a 640, but lots of people said Sanyos got better reception. I decided to get a replacement. I just received my 3100. Unless I'm doing something terribly wrong, my pics on the 3100 are horrible. They are so grainy that it's hard to make out what the pic is.

I wanted the 8300, but Sprint said I couldn't get it--I had to get it through a store, which would mean I'd have to cancel my account and reopen it. I'd lose my phone # because they said I couldn't port it over.

I liked the 640, but wanted the best reception possible. Now I'm frustrated because the 3100 isn't what I hoped for.

Frustration. I have not been too happy with Sprint so far. The customer service has not been great--at least the people I've talked with. I just want the 8300 is that too much to ask!

If you want a camera phone, I'd advise to stay away from the 3100.

Just my 2 cents.
