Irish site RTE is reporting that Ireland's cabinet leader, Bertie Ahern, has put forward a proposal for the EU leaders meeting in Brussels that would greatly reduce or remove completely the roaming fees that EU mobile carriers charge consumers when they venture outside of their own country. The proposal backs up an expected announcement from the European Commission coming on Tuesday of next week.
Any such regulation of roaming fees would require the approval of the member countries of the EU as well as that of the EU Parliament. Stiff opposition from the EU's many carriers is expected.
Early last year Germany's T-Mobile and Vodafone units were charged by the EU of overcharging for roaming into Germany. Later in the year the EC announced that it did not consider the current carrier roaming rates to be good for competition and announced that it would taking action.
