View Full Version : The New Sanyo Line up for 2nd Quarter
Just got the scoop today from our sanyo meeting
Sanyo PM-3100:
New Low end Camera phone comes in a variety of colors including Espresso. has RL
Sanyo VI-2400:
Successor to the 2300 same feature with a new look, lotsa colors as well
Sanyo MM-6600:
AKA the Katana. This new Slim Phone will not have Power Vision but will have a Megapixel Camera, Bluetooth and come in Black, Pink, and Silver. Very similar looking to the blade
Sanyo PV-8400:
This will have Bluetooth, EVDO, 1.3megapixel camera, and MicroSD slot. this phone is supposed to come in 3 colors and have a new thing called "Facemasks" which is just another word for face plates
Also the new dual mode phone you might have heard of over the past week will not be from Sanyo. It'll be from Motorola :tu:

6600 no power vision :td: I wonder if the 8400 has a QVGA, if not then that sucks. :td: Oh well, I'm happy with my 6700 and I don't see myself going back to a regular phone anytime soon if ever.

ok....price point for these phones...any info as far as that goes?
Sounds like nothing much to get excited about. Where is the high-end Sanyo?? I'll be sticking with my Blade for quite some time it seems.
3100 will be about $50 for new acts and the 2400 will be about
$30 and the Katana will defintely not be $600 SRP it's designed for the mid level crowd and will be priced well below the price of the blade
these were the only 4 phones discussed at the meeting. there was no mention of a 5700 or a 7600

OK I know y'all don't wanna hear this, but the 9000 is the high end sanyo. Say what you want...it's not like samsung is releasing high end phones every 2 months. Except for paper-thin construction & bluetooth it has all the features it needs. And anyone who frequents the Sanyo discussion would know that the 9000 owners are very happy with their phones...

If I had to bet, I would bet that rofl's specifications will be closer to the final product. Mainly based on 2 reasons:
The spec's listed in bc's post seem wildly optimistic if the Katana is to delivered in June.
Sanyo seems to work in small evolutionary steps. Not the giant revolutionary step mentioned in bc's post.
If nothing else, it'll be interesting to see what the final phones look like.

well we should see the 3100 april and then the rest before or during mid summer.
I know everyone HERE wants high end phones but the reality is alot of consumers could care less i talk to people everyday at work who are looking for something that isnt expensive and for all the salesmen out there they will probably agree with me. so for us this is exciting cause the current sanyo line up bites

Thanks for the date info.
I actually don't want a super high-end phone. When I saw the $600 specification, I was bummed. All I want is a solid dependable phone with some cool features like BT & a decent screen. Your post was quite heartening. It gives me hope that I can remain a sanyo fan.

I feel sorry for Sanyo. Their marketshare has been wiped away. Their phones are very reliable, but I won't go back anytime soon. This new lineup, minus the Katana, is nothing LG and Samsung didn't have a year ago.
The 9000 is a high-end phone. But its not the phone for me. I wish Sanyo could invest some money into design.

Totally agree with you. As a salesman I want some good low-end and mid-range phones because it makes it easier to get that activation if you got a good phone at a low price. IMHO Sprint needs to get some more BT phones out there especially in the mid-range dept. As far as people asking about high-end phones, a carrier is only going to carry a few high-end phones as most of the phones they will sell will be low to mid-range phones. According to the information being posted the 8400 sounds like a mid-range phone with high-end features which is definitely a cool thing. I mean I don't know how much I believe on the miniSD card slot but Megapixel camera and PV i believe and am hoping for BT. MiniSD would be cool but I don't think that Sprint or Sanyo will see it as a neccesary option in a mid-range phone. In regards to BC post on the Katana he did mention different versions of the Katana. The Katana may simply be a thin phone line up similar to the the RAZR and SLVR from Motorola so who knows we may expect to see some low-end, mid-range and high end versions. I for one am very excited about the new phones coming out within the next year. It is going to be interesting.

Trust me when I say this year and beyond this is the era for sanyo they finnally got there stuff together the nokia merge was justa begining I feel a bright future!!! just think about it! No pics has yet to be released to the general public there ready for a surprise on samsung and LS(LIFE SUCKS) I mean LG I got faith! the 9000 was a start and test the rest is a new future!

Sanyo is going to be fine. Someone mentioned market share. Well Sanyo is only exclusive to Sprint. I believe they are contracted and not able to pitch other company's. Nokia will get them that foot in the door they need.
We all know they make a great handset. This year won't be there best but the future is much improved now.
High end phones are nice but for me I'm tired of spending $350+ when a new phone is released. I'll be sticking with my 9000 for as long as I can. It does everthing I want except get me beer out of the fridge. The slim phone fad doesn't appeal to me either. I need better battery life then what the slims can offer.

A lot of people here (myself included sometimes) forget that your average user doesn't care about a phone having all the features on it that we want it to have. And sanyo consistenly makes some of the most stable and best performing phones that sprint carries.

before anyone pipes saying the thin fad is out, im not in it for the fad...im in it for the size. if sanyo could make a nice compact phone w/everything the 9000 has, ill jump on it..i dont really care that much about it being thin, at least minituarise the phone's components so we can have battery life comparable to GSM.

OK I know y'all don't wanna hear this, but the 9000 is the high end sanyo.
The 9000 has been discontinued for some time. Sanyo doesn't offer a high-end phone right now. (My definition of high-end requires QVGA and/or a memory card slot and/or at least 2MP camera.)
If the 8400 has a microSD slot, it will qualify as high-end. But that is doubtful, since the 5600 and 9000 have miniSD, and the 7500 and 8300 have no slot at all.
Tigrrre

my guess is they want to bring high end features to middle-type phones (boost multimedia demand, it may correlate w/the idea to make sprint music store a subscription)

Ok, you have your definition of a 'high end' sprint phone, then there is reality. At the end of the row we have 3 'high end' phones, the 920, 7500, and the 900. While I'll admit sanyo isnt winning atm, the 7500, and the 9000 are 'high end' phones. (that was a period) YOUR definiton means dirt. Any EVDO phone is high end. hell, people still concider the 8300 high end, just because its a kick ass phone. Not based on the 'QVGA' screen or features, just cause it is a kick ass phone.
Tigrrre
03-30-2006, 12:48 AM
theres a whole bunch of people who beg to differ on the 8300...but each to his own. ;)
I disagree that the 8300 is "high-end" since it spawned off the previous 8100 and 8200 which were by no means high-end. Most would agree the 5000 series (5300, 5400, 5500, 5600) phones are Sanyo's most high-end, ending with the MM-9000.
damn would everyone get off this "high end" discussion and stay on topic. new phones come out every quarter. if you want an expensive sanyo call sprint and order a 9000 they have 57 left. otherwise wait for your expensive phone for later in the year.

prob would drive up cost per unitYeah, but why the 1.3mp camera? If it's just supposed to be an entry-level slim handset, why does it need a camera or even Bluetooth for that matter? That's what threw me off. Without PV, it just looks half assed to me. Like maybe battery life is already weak and EV-DO usage would have it dead too quickly.

Still not cheap for most people. It's nowhere near what the high end phones cost, but still, most people opt for the $40 2300 over the $130 8300. It's a midrange phone, not cheap, but not the most expensive.

u guys are funny.
1st off, I'm surprised that not more than 3 people are excited about the 8400. If he had posted that it was a 5700 with those exact same specs every1 here would be doing backflips. A card slot, bluetooth, and EVDO, from Sanyo? That seems to be every1's dream phone here... essentially a Sanyo version of the A920. The 8000 series to me have always seemed to be bringing "high-end" features to levels that more people can afford. The 8100 did that with picturemail, the 8200 did it with.... speakerphone maybe? The 8300 did that with the TV features, and now the 8400 will do it with Power Vision, and u get bluetooth to boot. What's not to get excited about?
I also agree with what some1 else said, get off this whole high-end mumbo jumbo. If I were a company that was trying to return to profits I'd go straight to what I know would sell, which is the 8000 series and the skinny phone. Furthermore, look at a 93 Nissan Altima, then look at a 2003 Nissan Altima.... or a 93 Civic and an 03 Civic. Things change and grow up. That's what the 8400 is doing... it's raising the bar but still saying somewhat affordable.
My pennies...
CoreyTheGent
03-31-2006, 07:06 PM
I agree, Jaggrey. Me, I'd be more excited about the Katana if it had EV-DO, but now I'm personally looking forward to the 8400. If they shaved a few millimeters off the thickness, brought the antenna inside and gave it a refreshed keypad, I'm sure the masses will go wild once we get to see pictures. The 8000 series line has gone so stagnant when it comes to style, however, that nobody's expecting to be wowed. And none of these 9000 owners are going to be impressed if it doesn't have a QVGA screen.

Well, I don't think it's that people in general don't like the 8000 series, it's that the people HERE--the phone junkies--just don't get excited about the 8000 series.
You're right that it's a decent phone and it introduces new "high-end" features in mid-priced handsets, but there's nothing cutting edge about them... and people here want cutting edge.

I still use the 8300, if you ask me its the best phone sprint has, I hate the joint on the new sanyos. I bought the 920 and returned it, yea power vision was great, so was the card slot and the 1.3 camera, but the features the 920 and the 8300 shared, the 8300 killed it. The 8400 will be my next phone.

04-01-2006, 09:51 AM
I'd forgotten about the 8400 with all the talk of the thin phones...
IF it's in a similar case to the 7500 (minus rubber) with the new hinge design, is a little bit thinner, has QVGA, BT, microSD, changable faceplates, and EVDO it will be worth considering for sure. If it's missing the memory slot or QVGA then it'll just be a non-rubber 7500 with a different design. I'm sure it'll be nice, but no thanks.
My only real complaint with the 9000 is it's size, but it does make up for it with a keypad that doesn't give you carpal tunnel if you want to send a few texts a day. Sure it's rehashed, but still my favorite sanyo keypad ever.

I remember! The 8200 was an attempt to bring RL to the masses! But I guess RL is a whole other story.
True people here want cutting edge, but that's no reason to shoot down a company for wanting to make money so that in the future they can afford to make cutting edge without shooting themselves in the foot financially.

The beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so there won't be any consensus on the looks of this phone. Personally, I like it and if it comes out around June, I might get it and 700P for my two lines when I renew.
As for the RAZR comparisons, this is like the iPod situation but in regards to slim phones. Nowadays, every MP3 player is compared to iPod and anything remotely iPod-ish (color, shape, wheel, etc.) is deemed an iPod-knock off. At least, now that the pictures are out, people will switch from comparing RAZR/Blade to RAZR/6600 (or Blade/6600 in Tutu's case).

The Katana is a step in the right direction for Sanyo--a NEW design! I, like everyone else, am waiting for pic's of the 8400... If Sanyo does that phone right, along with the Katana, it will be enough to hold-over many Sanyo loyalists until the Sanyo "Revolution" (aka 9100/5700) is released.

First just to clarify - Sprint announced ready link will NOT be compatible with Direct connect until 2008 at the earliest - they have to wait for evdo rev a to be rolled out across the entire cdma network. Which means they have to continue rolling out evdo and then convert the older evdo sights to rev a (currently Sprint and Verizon use rev B) when rev a becomes available in Early 07. This is why Sprint is having Motorola design the gate cdma phone with iden direct connect, to bridge the gap until 08 when they will be able to cross 2way across networks. However expect sprint to begin migrating Nextel customer off iden completely at that point as rev a should offer 2way speeds as fast or faster than nextel's direct connect.
Just came from a Sanyo forum, the Katana will be $99.99 after rebate (msrp $249.99) Enough with the speculation people. Quit guessing. The only products on the horizon by sanyo is the 2400, 3100, 8400, and the Katana.

hard drives have moving parts, are generally slower, and consume more power, plus anything less than an 8GB microdrive is kinda silly for the tradeoffs you are going to run into. flash memory on the other hand is solid state (no moving parts), can be fast as hell, and only consume power when they are being read from or written to and use very little of it during those operations anyway. i wouldn't see why they couldn't put 1 or 2 gigs in a phone that they aren't trying to make super thin, especially with samsung about to ramp up production on 16Gb nand flash chips, but thats just me

I was interested in the Katana and I now like the sounds of the 8400.. But I don't think I am up till 07.. But if the 8400 has Power Vision does that mean I have to change my plan and I can't use my 10 dollar regular vision? Cause now I pay 10 bucks for unlimited vision and text messaging.. I never hardly use picture mail anymore it's 5 bucks.. But with my discount I just keep it.. So are there more pics of this Katana anywehre in the differne't colors? And any 8400 pics yet or no? Rose

Probably has to do with size. microSD slots take up less space inside of a phone as it was designed strictly for handsets from the beginning. I've yet to see a RAZR-type slim phone with anything other than microSD. Perhaps the 8000 series is going to shrink with the 8400?
Or "r0fl" could just be wrong and it's miniSD afterall.

Funny. :) That's fine. Then bring on a bug-less Blade II instead.

Is there ANY new info/dates regarding the 6600 or 8400? I need a new phone pretty desperately...and I'm stalling. Any info would be encouraging. Thanks.

It sucked. Too much of a device, not enough phone. How long did you have the 6700 and did you try any of theses hacks? The phone is a lot better with these hacks. The only thing I want to get is a software that organizes my contacts better which I'm sure there is something out there. I can see why people give up on the 6700 becuase it takes some time to get the device to there liking or a pda/cell is just not for them.
Glad you folks are enjoying MagicButton.
If you liked that stuff I can't help but recommend these to greatly improve the 6700:
Phone D-Pad Hack: 4 new functions (free) (http://www.pdaphonehome.com/forums/showthread.php?t=69382&highlight=dpad)
PhoneAlarm Lite: Must have app for missed alarms, profiels, notifications, etc. (http://www.pocketmax.net/phoneAlarmLite.htm)
AE Button Plus: Add upto 4 options per button (http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=21070)
SmallMenu: Replace "start" w/this cascading menu (free) (http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=3146)
Batti: Better, low memory battery meter (free) (http://pda.jasnapaka.com/batti/localization.php)
Pauly A/E-Ten Dialer Skins: Repalce the phone dialer with these great skins (free) (http://www.paulya.com/etenskins.htm)
enjoy.
