View Full Version : 7500 distortion

I've replaced the mm-7500 twice already due to distortion from the earpiece. Calls sound bad, like it's muffled. I've taken it in to a Sprint store for diagnostics and the Sprint rep says it sounds like there is too much power going into the earpiece. He let me try 3 different 7500's but they all sounded bad, to which the rep also agreed sounded distorted. We tried playing with the volume, turning it all the way down, etc. but to no avail. Any other 7500 owners having this problem? Is there a known design flaw with the earpiece?

Mine is a little distorted due to volume at times as with all the Sanyo's I've had but when I turn it down a few levels it's fine.

i wouldnt say all, it is extremely rare that my 9000 distors. Even maxed with loud ass music. Rare as in i think its happened twice since i got the phone lol

maybe the Sanyos just sound different compared to other makes? I've used Motorolas forever on T-mobile and Cingular so maybe my ears are just sensitive to the different sound that the Sanyo produces

My 9000 doesn't distort with loud music either, but I guess some of my friends just talk too close to their phone and I have to turn the volume down to understand them. The phone isn't clipping or crackling or anything. I prefer the loudness.

I have the same "muffled sound" problem on both my 7500's - drives the wife crazy, and I talked about the problem on the review of the 7500 I posted in the reviews section.
Personally, I think this is what you just might call the 'Sanyo Sound.' I've had the 7400, and now the 9000. No doubt I'm a Sanyo fan, but I really don't care for the earpiece sound. Yeah, they go loud, but there is a distortion, or a hollow 'boxy' kind of sound to me. My very first cell phone was the N400, no high end phone for sure, but the earpiece sounded clearer IMO. I let my friend make a call on my 7400 once, and when he gave it back he said he hated the sound of it, and he had a LG 225. I used my friends Toshiba 4050 a while back, and was amazed of the crystal clear clarity of his earpiece, it didn't go as loud, but I'd switch earpieces in a second for it. The 9000 does sound better to me than the 7400, but for me it's just something I've gotten used to. I think Sanyo's are great phones, but I'm hoping they clean up the sound a bit in the near future. Of course, this kind of thing can be subjective, I guess it can depend on your ears.
so it turns out i'm not the only one to notice this. with all the hype of the 9000 on here i'm surprised this hasn't come up (maybe I missed it when doing my research).
I've had my 9000 about a month now and I have to say "what?" way more often than on my old Samsung N200. I find myself trying to lower the volume past the lowest setting hoping that the slight distortion will disappear.
Totally agree with the person above - it is definitely LOUD, but it is not very clear.
so it's not the perfect phone after all. especially annoying since I don't have a land-line.
not sure how this would have affected my decision had I seen it before purchasing, but it would have made me think about it more (maybe it's a good thing I didn't see it :icon_smil ), especially since it seems like the 7500 has the same issue (that description is a good one - it does seem like there is too much power going to the earpiece).
past the 15-day deadline now so it would be tough to return it. I think it's a great phone in every other way, but this affects it's main function.

I used ear phones mostly for ringtones/songs...lvl 14 usually they stay clear

Mine sounds fine. :)
As does the rest of the people who I know with Sanyos. I swear, ONLY on the internet do I hear about earpiece problems! :D
I should say one more thing on this, the earpiece sound for me does depend on who I'm talking to. If Mike calls me on his cellphone for instance, I know it's going to sound horrible, and I will have to say "WHAT?" every other word. If my girl calls me from work, it's great, and crystal clear, and then I'll get everything in between. It just seems on average I had better overall sound with phones that weren't Sanyo. I'd rather have crystal clear over loud, but I'm used to it, and everything else about the 9000 rocks so hard, I can't part with it over a earpiece that doesn't sound the best on every call.

My voice quality is fine.
It sounds better using the (included) stereo headset, though.

this has been discussed before (you said you haven't seen this issue). remember, the 9k was EOL'd before you even thought about registering here.

I know - I did a lot of searching on here before buying though. missed this issue somehow.
anyway, regarding some of the comments - this only concerns the earpiece (not headphones - I listen to music on it too and it sounds better than I could have hoped with an adapter and decent headphones).
And yes it is dependant on who I'm talking to. Sometimes it is fine, but if the line/ other person's phone/connection isn't great, it is tougher to hear than with my old Samsung (that N200 had very good sound quality - very natural-sounding). I do definitely say 'what?' more often now w/the 9000 - to the point one of my friends said it was getting annoying. It's not so bad that I can't live with it though.

In the week that I've had mine, everything has sounded good. Sometimes a voice sounds just a little muffled, but not garbled in any way.
It's been wonderful having a phone I can really crank up. My old motorola was awful when it came to volume. When I'm driving I have to hold the receiver up to my ear even in speakerphone mode. I can hold my 7500 at arms length and hear it just fine..

Never had any probs with mine
Sorry if these is a bit off topic since I have have a 9000, but where the loud volume really comes in for me is when I'm watching Sprint TV for instance, I finally have all the volume I need to listen to it, my previous phone was the 7400, and I could barely hear any Multi-Media audio on full blast in a quiet room. The 9000 volume goes to 16, I never have to put it that high to hear it fine. Sounds like the 7500 has great volume in this respect also.

Aye.. the 7500 has fantastic volume!
I almost went back to that phone.. but at my shop the Fusic was only a few bucks more.. and so far the performance has been about equal to the 7500

i totally agree with the whole distortion thing. i have a 5600, and when i brought it in ,i was told the speaker was 'dirty' and they cleaned it. it does depend on the person im talking to as well. but i just try to stick with using the stereo headset. as for changing with volume levels, when i get i lower, it is hard to hear.. but i would rather have a little distortion than my old samsung where i couldnt get it loud enough

Yes, generally speaking, there does seem to be a trade-off with Samsung vs Sanyo in this respect, so far, the best earpiece I've ever heard was the one in my friend's Toshiba 4050, absolutely natural sounding crystal clear earpiece, but again, you can't crank up the volume if you have to. To have that earpiece in a Sanyo with it's volume would be just right to me. Talking with the stereo earbuds does eliminate all problems, with very good clarity, and all the volume you'll ever need, but I don't find myself taking those with me where ever I go.

i have always carried a hands free in my pocket, carrying a stereo handsfree is no biggie to me.
