Hey I'm just wondering if anyone has got charged yet for using your phone as a modem without the PAM plan and turning the modem NAI off? if not, approximately how much data do you think you've used? I have a samsung a920 and I only tether every once in a while, but the download speeds are so good compared to more dial up connection I'd really like to use it more often. if anyone knows a little more about this I'd appreciate it

It has something to do with sprint stopping people from using they're phone as a modem with a phone-as-modem plan. on samsung phones you can disable the modem NAI by going into setting, display, press 0 to access hidden menu, enter the code 040793, scroll down to modem NAI and select disable. reboot your phone and modem NAI is disabled. you can use your phone as a highspeed modem with no phone-as-modem plan. I believe that disabling the modem NAI also makes it hard for sprint to tell the difference between your in phone browser data usage and modem data usage. anyhoo, if you're new to the debug menu, please don't mess around with the other options (especially korea mode) as you could screw up your phone.

Is this at all an issue with a LG PM-225? I don't see NAI anywhere in any of the service menus. I just know PAM worked right out of the box.

i tried the NAI part, it worked ... but i still was not able to connect to the data network at all ... the comp dials the number, the phone shows that the number is being dialed, but after a minute the phone hangs up and i get an error on the comp that only says "there was a modem error"

the modem NAI thing only affects EVDO phones.

Yeah, I just got this a920 on insurance replacement for my a940. I couldn't get it to tether until I turned off NAI. Otherwise you get a error message (#67) that says user name and PW is incorrect. So the only way to tether with the a920 is with NAI off. That's what I've found out.

How much are people tethering using this method? Think you could get away with 100 megs per month or so?

Stupid question:
I dont' have bluetooth. Can I disable my NAI (a920 with SERO) and connect to my laptop with the USB cable?
Sorry to be a novice,
Danny

diabling the NAI does not guarantee you wont be charged though...

What is better for tethering? Vision or Powervision?
btw.. how does Vision differ from Powervision.

Vision is like ISDN speed (128kbps) and PowerVision is more like DSL speed.

Well, if I answer your second question......it automatically answers the first (I would think).
Power Vision = High Speed Wireless Data. You may also hear "EV-DO", which is the actual technical term for Power Vision (which is Sprint's Marketing name for EV-DO). Depending on conditions (and bursts of speeds), you can get speeds that are up to 8-10 times faster than regular Vision.

With NAI disabled, I played around with the USB cable connection. Works fine.
Just recently, I bought a bluetooth adaptor for my laptop. Has anyone else noticed while using your PAM and bluetooth , the phone itself says "connected as modem"?
I havent seen any data charges online. But wonder if this will flag differently on their system.

Why not just get the phone-as-modem plan and not worry about it anymore? I got it, and have used 16 gigs in the last 3 months. not a word from sprint.

I would, if they allowed it with the Sero plan.

I don't have power vision but the only time I get billed like that is if I use my computer to dial something other than #777. For example, calling a dial up ISP or sending a fax gets me billed like that.

I have neither Power Vision nor Vision. I used my A900 tethered to call another ISP and my online account now shows 11 CASUAL WIRELESS WEB USAGE minutes. I have not faxed, but if I wanted to I guess the charge is that same. My question is why is Sprint charging extra for faxes and calls to Modems when traditional phone companies didn't.
Is there some law that explicitly prohibited the traditional phone companies form doing so?

Landline phones have 64k carriers. The best speed you can get with a modem is 53ish k (56k theoretical) because the conversion process isn't perfect. Cell phones use as low as 8k carriers. When you make a modem or fax call, it's a special case, and it is different than a normal voice call.

Can you further explain how it is different?

I have the 6700 and the SERO plan.
I rarely tether, so no way I'm going to pay extra every month for that. It's nice to know that I can tether anytime I want to for as long as I want to. The #1 time I tether? When stuck at an airport waiting for a flight.
Or when my cable goes down at home.
