View Full Version : So What's Your 'Life Data' Total?

autoprime

On the A900 and I believe most newer Samsung phones(not sure about Sanyo) you can press ##786# and set info like "life timer" and "life data".

What's your total Life Data and how long have you had the phone? Please include whether you use your phone-as-modem or not.

I'm just curious how much we all use our power vision. :)

I have 26MB total for life data. life timer is 215min. I'm a new Sprint customer as of Jan 5 2006. I have NOT used my phone-as-modem.

235 MB since 1/3/06 on my MM9000. That's with maybe ~5 MB of tethering.

my kilobyte usage is 52 megabytes. Got a treo 650 with regualar vision. Only had this particular phone for a few months (about 2 Months)..I be on this badboy a lot. If I had power vision (not available on Treo 650) , my megabyte usage would be at least 1+ gig easily (in just a few months). Technology is a wonderfull thing. Thanks for the ###786# guess it works on all sprint phones.

yeah... reset that too. it was like my phone just came out of the box. i had to reprogram the phone #/msid and all the demo games/apps were back as well.

whats to code to clear it?

I went into test mode and pressed 038. It restarted my phone.. powered on... said "Please Wait" for a few mins then rebooted again... everything was gone. That code might just work for the A900. Test codes seem to vary a bit from phone to phone.

Unlimited PAM is currently 39.99 with a new 2 year contract. If you already have a vision plan you will not need both, so if you were paying $15 per month for Powervision you net increase would be $24.99. However you do not get Picture Mail or any other special vision services included in the PAM plan, but they can be added Ala-Carte

I listen to WCCR (128kbps) at Purdue University or XM (64kbps) through MiniXM.

I listen through music using the EVDO service about 2 hours a day on the average. I also browse forums (of course).

WCCR would be 16K/s and XM would be 8K/s (8 bits in a byte, divide the bits by 8 to get bytes). There are 3600 seconds in an hour. Assuming I listen to both about 50/50, and for three hours at the low average at 12K/s, 12K/s*3600s/hr*2hr*30days/month=2,592,000Kb/month. So apparently, I listen to it a bit shy of 2 hours a day but you get the idea.

I listen to it while going to class (I attend Purdue), when I'm by myself at work, and while I work out. It just adds up.

I also ran speed tests a few times to show off the EVDO service to my "stupid" Verizon user friends (most of them have Sprint, but the ones who want data use Verizon and I have no idea why).

The EVDO service in the Lafayette/West Lafayette Indiana area is great. I get speed tests approaching 2Mbit across a variety of tests.

At my Mom's place, 1xRTT is available but as of last night I "see" an EVDO tower occasionally. Are all new towers going up automatically EVDO or something?

I love this PPC-6700. PDAs have the potential to eat data. I also do use Orb, yes, but not too often.

I have the PPC6700.I noticed that "Life Data" reset to 0 by itslef after it reaches 4-5GB,so it isn't really "Life Data",the reason I say this is,I use Sling and streaming internet radio a lot every month(4-7GB),when "Life Data" got to around 5GB,it reset itself back to 0,this happened every single time since I have this phone since 05/06.

Yep, I am on a 6700 as well... they must use a 4 byte word (unsigned) for data timers, so it will roll over at 2^32 or 4.096GB. Mine currently reads

How many GB of data do you use in a month?
Unclear. Depends (like the poster above) on how much dead time I need to fill via streaming video/audio ;)

Normal day I use no more then 20-30MB of data (mostly audio streams, some live maps, usual email and browsing), or just around a gig/mo
Day where I watch some shows, boom. Video is streaming at 80KB/sec, so a 30 minute show is 144MB, so if I add that to the mix 10 days out of the month I've more then doubled the usage to the 2.5GB range (this is just the in-pipe, out-pipe is going to add at least 10%)

Anyway, a light month under a gig, a bored month pushing 3gig.

Good thing I don't tether ;)

Dude, you think that's low?

Why are you "trying" to get it higher? LOL, this thread is not a contest of who consumes more MB in less time!!

Anyway, just wanted to give you the answer of what uses so much data.
MULTIMEDIA!
In fact, if you leave have a Stream of orb or skingbox at 120kbps.. That's about 12kb per second...
Let's do some math together!

12kb x 60 seconds of a minute = 720kb
720kb x 60 minutes or 1 hour = 43MB IN JUST ONE HOUR!!!

Now let's say you stream 1 hour everyday (and that's very little for some people)
That's 1GIG a month!

This math SOLELY represents orb streaming for 1 hour/day and that's it!
No tethering, nothing!

Oh, and i used relatively low bitrates. You can easily do 500kbps bitrate on orb with a good ev-do signal. That would up this figures almost 5 times!!!!!!!!!!

hey thanks for the math. i guess i never really thought about it that way before. since u say multimedia and it seems like that's from experience, do you use orb a lot, or at all for that matter? you also said that an hour a day doesnt seem like that much to some people! wouldnt that just about kill your battery? i havent teathered at all today, i 've used the internet for a combination of ten minutes or so and replied/read maybe 20 txt messages, my battery shouldnt be down to 1 bar, but it is. i think i might take it in on monday and get it exchanged, or even upgrade. it's only been a little over a week so i should be able to do that, i hope. how good is the battery life on ur ppc6700?

I have a 6700 with the OEM (standard) battery. I've done a lot of power testing, and can say that EVDO *use* (not just on and idle) is just about equal to the drain of a phone call.

Sooooo you get about 3 hours of talk time out of the OEM battery (+/- 30 minutes) and you'd get the same out of EVDO streaming.

1 hour of video streaming is 33% of the OEM battery, or 10-15% of one of the fat extended batteries. 1 hour of audio streaming is about half to a quater of that (no display on, only about 25% of the EVDO use) so 1 hour of music might be 15% of your battery.

I use orb a lot, but I've got a lot of access to power. In car, I use a moto razr car adapter ($10 @ target) so it leaves the car at 100% battery after the commute w/ streaming. In the office I'll plug it in to the pc USB port for a charge if it's under 70%. And for long plane trips I have a 2nd OEM battery, but there you've got to preload your media - no EVDO on the plane :D
