Up until now, I know of no Sanyo phone that will send SMS while roaming. My 2300 will receive SMS when roaming, but the firmware blocks attempts to send.

Is the 4930 any different?

Very interesting, and good to hear. Strike one more little annoying item that Sprint has found a way to un-do. I only wish they would offer a firmware update to retrofit other phones like the 2300. Yeah, right.

Can we have RUIM cards and/or online instant ESN swaps now please? What about ability to self-service pull PRL updates? How about firmware updates (meaning, actually deploying OTA firmware updates for something other than an LG)?

I find it so interesting that Sprint rolls out functionality, like this example, so piecemeal. Why has it not always been this way (ever since Shortmail was booted and true SMS was adopted at least)? Kind of like the Roaming Only setting, instead of Analog. That took them years to finally get to, and even so, the LGs don't do it right yet. Sprint does not seem real interested in stingent product consistency across phones, at least it does not come across that way. Bless their hearts, I stick with them anyway, as they do seem to get around to improving things, you just have to buy a new phone that they allegedly lose money on!

I think the fact we do not have the ability to do online ESN swaps is a joke.

I agree with your other points as well. Seems like it wouldn't be hard to ask the manufacturers to update the firmware of the phones that are still being sold (at the very least).

How about firmware updates (meaning, actually deploying OTA firmware updates for something other than an LG)?My 9000 has this ability, as does the Sammy 900, 920, and 940. Just figured I'd expand your mind a bit. :tu:

My 2300 also has the "ability" for FOTA. My point was Sprint has not deployed updates for actual download over the air, despite their being available through the store.

first, wanted to say the 9000 does allow to send texts while roaming. second, they did release a FOTA update for the 9000

Yes, the Sanyo 4930 allows you to send SMS while roaming.

Interesting. I suppose it is dependent on where you are roaming??

I tried it on a 4930 in the sprint store yesterday - put the phone into roam only (which is Verizon in the Atlanta area) and tried to send a SMS. The phone did at least try to send (my 2300 won't do that), but it got an error message. It was able to send an SMS in Sprint mode.

Yes. Sprint has to have implemented an roaming agreement which allows for the sending of SMS with a particular roaming partner. The messages are definitely sent when roaming on Alltel in the Phoenix area.

Any idea on whether the demo phones in Sprint stores can be prevented from doing anything while roaming? Did you try and place a call while the phone was roaming? That could be another culprit I suppose.
