I did a quick search and found a couple of references to this discount (some mentioned 10%, others 15%), but nothing about how to get it setup on my account?
First... Does the discount currently exist?
Second... If it does, can it be setup/requested with an email to sprint? Or is a trip to a local store necessary (to show govt ID badge)?
Third... Since I'm in the market for a new phone (A900 or A940, can't decide?) and probably a new plan, would it be easier/better to get the discount setup on my existing account first? Or just do it all at one time (new phone, new plan, request discount, etc)?
Last... Since this is my first post, hello to everyone and thanks for posting all the information I've been reading for the past few days.

A few years ago, I was told 5%. But it is actually 15% according to an email I recently received at work.
If you have trouble getting the discount, I am told the number to call is 866-873-1883. All federal government employees are eligible for this discount. Based on my colleagues experience, it may take a while for the CSR to look up the proper code.
BTW, the discount for Nextel is 18%; the telephone contact is 800-639-6111

FYI, the discount is due to the Federal Telecommunications Act of 1996. It's a 15% discount for employees/Armed Forces members. I just got mine back in September and was told I couldn't do it via email or phone, I had to come show ID. So I went to a store in uniform and they hooked it up. The only thing is, they re-set my 2-yr agreement beginning date to that time.

I was able to get a 15% discount as a police officer over the phone. CS just had to look up my department under the State to see if we qualified. (Nextel was only 5% for me.)
Was able to do everything by phone call.

Does the Sprint discount apply to DoD contractors working at a federal site as well? I know Cingular honors their 19% discount in my location (all you need is a base ID and .mil email address).

I would imagine they would if you've got an ID from the post/base where you work. Maybe one of the experts here can say for sure?

why should they get a discount?
federal employee doscopunt is 15% and should be available for anyone who works for a federal agency (mil included.) It is a blanket discount that they use for states also and if done correctly is one of the few discounts that do NOT change your plan date, just an attached code placed onto your account to get 15% off.
I have the federal discount, so I understand it fairly well

I still haven't received a response to my email about the discount, but in the interim I went ahead and got a new phone and managed to get on a SERO plan. Wonder if they will honor the discount on a SERO plan?

why should they get a discount?
I can't answer why, but all the carriers I talked to (Sprint 15%, Cingular 19%, Tmobile 10%, Cincinnati Bell Wireless 10%) said they would apply the discount on plan rates. They did not differentiate b/w military, civilian or contractor, just as long as you worked on the base.

When I signed up for the state employee discount in 03 they only gave me 5%, and because we know how sprint likes to re-up your contract with any little change I don't want to go and ask if there has been an upgrade in the amount.

Well, i got a higher discount then everyone mentioned here. I called up, told them that in store i was told i could get 15% but it was never applied. So they brought up my account, asked me where i worked, told them. Asked me a few questions like, address supervisor and phone #, then told me i could get 25% off :) Changed my billing cycle and thats all there was to it. Btw, added to a SERO plan

"Sprint offers a 15% military discount. Update: call 1-888-703-9514 and you must reference AAFES code #0109565715. Call and you will get the discount with no problems and no additional service commitment!"
This is a quote I got off of Military.com. I'm going to try it tomorrow.

I just had to upgrade my phone since my old one quit working and discussed it with the in-store rep day before yesterday and according to him it can be done over the phone, in fact even if you go into the store in person, the representative has to call in to get it set up because it is handled like a corporate/business account (maybe because of volume price discounting??). In a semi-related question, do any of you have the USAA military insurance 5% discount?? Is that still in effect? ( a friend told me they dissolved the partnership) and can the two discounts be combined or is only 1 discount at a time allowed?

Unfortunately, the USAA discount has gone away. Would have been nice to get it, though.

Supposedly there's a Postal Employees Discount for Sprint plans - I think it's something like 18% off your monthly bill.
I'm gonna have to check on that one, I'm on the family plan, so I'm not really sure how that discount works.

Dand, how did you get the discount without changing the plan date? Do you know the code? :)
I was a little upset when I got this response (see below) as I don't know anyone (including my colleague in the next office) who was forced to take a new account # and billing date to get the discount. After I got this email, I called to re-confirm, was told that I needed a "business account" even though my old account was always treated as a business account. Oh well, I guess no harm no foul.
Dear [Boraxo],
