Are current EV-DO (Power Vision) phones future compatible with EV-DO Rev. A that will be rolled out later this yr/next yr? Or does Rev A require a different phone?

It will require a different phone. i dont think it will work with the newest Evdo phones.

If they name Rev A as Power Vision, then people might be upset their current "new" power vision phones are not fully compatible with the 2007 Power Vision network.

They wont work i say. All EVDO phones was built to work on both the RV AND PV, is was not built to work on EVDO REV.A. Lets look at it this way. All EVDO phone dont need EVDO REV.A, expect for faster speed. Second EVDO REV.A is a upgrade to EVDO NETWORK, so of course we will all need to buy a new phone to support the upgrade network. EVDO phones was design to handle the EVDO NETWORK.

hate to upset anyone here but im buying a ev-do phone and spoke to my rep personally like 30 mins ago. ev-do wont be in till next few months but rev a should work with it because they dont want to upset customers. so look for rev a in 2008 or evdo will work but no rev. A

Well if sprint must find a way. They will have to upgrade the way the data reach our phones, so that can have the higher speeds. I also heard that sprint are planning on making a new network for EVDO REV.A, so that mean new phones as i say above. But thats a rumor. it make more sense to upgrade the currect network, that way we can all have it.

I suspect a miscommunication.

Obviously, current EV-DO phones (and current 1xRTT phones etc.) will continue to work properly. However, I think it virtually impossible that current phones would be able to take advantage of a new technology that will only be rolled out over the next year or two.

Nor would there be much advantage to doing so. By itself, a new technology does not do the consumer much good unless new services can take advantage of it. But Sprint, as we all know, never adds new services (features) to existing phone models.

So for example, let's say that EV-DO rel A gives customers the ability to videoconference or QChat. Even if the chipset in my MM-9000 could handle rel A (which I highly doubt), the phone's software cannot do videoconferencing or QChat anyway. So what would be the advantage?

If they can make Rev. A backwards compatible somehow with Rev. 0 then the advantage would be current Power Vision phones could utilize the higher speeds in smaller markets where Rev. 0 will never be deployed and Rev. A will.

My understanding, Rev. A allow data and voice to utilize the same frequency, whereas Rev. 0 requires a seperate frequency set aside for data only.

I think what you're really asking is:

When Sprint finally rolls out Rev A across its entire network, will that rollout implicitly include support for Rel 0 (even in places that Rel 0 never covered before)?

I would certainly think that the answer is Yes, for two reasons:

1) Sprint's infrastructure vendors, like Lucent and Nortel, are specifically advertising the entire CDMA upgrade sequence as smooth and incremental. ("Just load our latest software and change out some line cards.") It would be highly uncharacteristic to offer a Rev A implementation that did not also support Rel 0.

2) By 2007-2008, Sprint will have sold millions of phones that use Rel 0. It would be folly not to offer all these customers Rel 0 coverage in places where Sprint must upgrade its hardware and software anyway to support Rev A.

I agree
