View Full Version : Extra file created when copying mp3/m4a to transflash card

In the process of putting music files onto the transflash card, it created a second file for each song. That is, I moved over one file (from my eMac into the music folder on the card) for each song, but two magically appear on the card. I've tried this with both mp3 and m4a formats. For both formats, only the first file plays on the phone; the second file reports an application error (Error M508), and stops the player. I suppose I can get around this by creating a playlist that doesn't include the extra files. Any clues as to what is creating the second file, whether the extra files are taking up space, etc.?

Hmmm... that is odd. You can find out if they're taking up space just by looking at the file size. Whatever the size is, that's how much room it's using.

I did a search for this online and it seems the problem is most likely your card reader. There are people complaining about the poor handling of certain readers. You can manually delete the duplicates that do not work. Others suggest using programs that "sniff out" duplicates and dispose of them. You would just have to hope it removes the correct file.

Thanks for the links. I tried manually deleting the files from the phone, and I get an error message (M508 application error), the same error that appears if I try to play the duplicate file. Next I opened the card on my mac to delete the file that way, but the duplicate file does not even show up. I only see one file per song on my computer, but two per song on the phone. I'm also not able to look at the file size; the phone doesn't give me an option, and of course I can't see it on the computer. My card reader is my HP 2210 all-in-one printer.

My suggestion would be to format your card and buy a new card reader. I use SanDisk's MobileMate without a problem and it's only about $15. I've never had any problems with it. Maybe someone else will have a better idea that won't cost you any money. :indiff:
