Hi all,

It's been a long time since I bought a new phone, almost 3 years. I wanted to get the "quad band" Samsung SPH-a790 so I can use it when I travel to Europe, but I no longer see it on the Sprint web site.

So now I'm torn between the MM-9000 or the A900. I like the fact the the A900 is black, really thin, and has a large display.

The MM-9000 has a SD card slot that I find to be really great. The MM-9000 also has the walkie talkie feature, but I am not interested in that. The MM-9000 is also double the size in thickness. Price is not a factor since they are around the same.

I came here to get the advise and suggestions of those who are familiar with both phones. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Harry

I still have a 9000. I havent played with a 900 yet. I will probably keep my 9000 because the menus are super fast, t9 remembers words, and better battery life. Designwise the 900 is obviously better. So I guess its just a question of whats more important to you.

I would go for the Sanyo 9000. I've tried both of them and it's not close, besides the look the samsung 900 is a joke. The battery life is horrible, no expansion card the funky way of charging the thing.

I like the fact that if you had a sanyo phone before you can use the same car charger. I think that you can not do this with a samsung phone,so many different chargers, I may be wrong from what you had before, but it helps to have similar charging abilities. I like the fact that everytime you buy a phone you do not need to buy a new car charger. With a sanyo you would be better off even on the next phone you would buy.

Long term wise you would be better off with a Sanyo 9000. I think the Blade is just a ripoff of the razor and when people get over the razor they will laugh at the Blade. Besides checkout Phonescoop and read the reviews. I still like Samsung phones but not lately.

I had both phones I returned my A900 for the sanyo 9000. I purchase the A900 on Nov 26, and returned the phone for the sanyo 9000 on Monday Dec 12.

The A900 has to many problems earpiece not good sound quality, using the bluetooth headset I always had the beeping in my ear. This was the phone and not the headset, other people had the same problem with different headsets. Picture mail problems, slow menus. With that said, they are people who stated that they did not have the same problems. So, I believe that their are 2 A900 out there, the good ones and the bad ones.

However I loved the sanyo 9000, I also had the sanyo 5600. The sanyo 9000 is a improved sanyo 5600, call quality is excellent, they improve on the low lightning that the 5600 camera took. Sanyo makes the best phones for sprint....

I have both right now and they are both great phones. They shouldn't be compared really the only real comparison is the qvga screen and the samsung is larger. I have had the samsung and loved the phone and would never get another non qvga phone again. The main great thing about the samsung 900 is how you can customize almost the entire phone screens and menus and things like that. You have less of that with the 9000. They are both excellent phones. If memory card is important then the 9000 is your phone. If you prefer looks and don't care about battery life then the 900 is your phone. Both have good earpieces the samsung is very clear a little bass to it and the sanyo is probably the best ear quality of any sanyo I have ever owned. Both do what they are supposed to do very well and that's make and receive calls.

They took the razr and made a much better phone. QVGA screen no razr has that, and that screen is beautiful. Razr can't even get a screen thats 262k they have the 65k internal screens and they want over 500.00 for it. Yeah right it's a better phone go ahead and believe that one.

The Sanyo 9000 wins hands down. I've used both phones extensively and it's not even close -- here's why:

I live on the edge of an EVDO-enabled area, and the Sanyo works reasonably well in my house. By comparison, the A-900 from Samsung doesn't have coverage in my house or even in my neighborhood. This has ALWAYS been the case with Sanyo VS Samsung. The reception on Samsung phones has always been inferior compared to Sanyo's phones -- and I've been a Sprint customer since 1998.

If you need Bluetooth, the Samsung may be the way to go, but if you want a quality phone that is built better, than Sanyo is your only answer.

It's interesting to note that Sprint is again rated the worst carrier in Atlanta (see Consumer Reports January 2006 issue), and I wonder how much better Sprint would do if they ditched Samsung altogether, since one of the lowest rated areas for Sprint here is "Dropped Calls." That certainly wouldn't be nearly as much of an issues if everybody owned Sanyo's.

I second what people are saying about the other features of the Sanyo 9000 (camera, display, card slot, etc...). The Samsung A-900 can't compare in these areas either.

I haven't had 1 dropped call with my a900 I guess living in the corp headquarters or at least real close counts for something.

I'm sure that being in KC probably does help, although you would think that Cingular is awesome in Atlanta (BellSouth's HQ's), and they're not. Atlanta is kind of a tricky area for the various carriers because it's very spread out and hilly with a lot of trees. If I lived in the middle of great coverage area for Sprint I'm sure I'd be more inclined to look at what Samsung has to offer, since they do tend to throw more bells and whistles into their products.

I know it's a little early to be judging the longevity of the various 1st generation EV-DO phones, but the A-900 is on its 3rd demo phone at the Sprint store closest to me. Could be a fluke...

did they rush the A900 out too soon? in my opinion, yes, definitely. just look at the bug/issue threads and how many users are experiencing problems. The fact that they released a firmware update mere days after it's initial release (with another one supposedly around the corner) supports my opinion. but hey, now we're all beta testers! isn't it cool!?

seriously though, the 9000 is a very nice phone. i was at an indecision with my A900 and i rushed out and got the 9000. too big in the hinge area, and the design is a rehash of the 5600. we need newer innovative designs for the high-end Sanyo's.

I went back to my A900 and now i love it, just took a little getting used to.

I tried the 9000 for a few days and decided to keep the a900. The things I liked about the a900 over the 9000 were:
Camera is better overall on the a900
Slim style goes in a pocket with no weird bulge
New styling, I am really tired of Sanyo constantly rehashing the same phone styles.
Bluetooth, I think once you are used to a wireless headeset it is near impossible to go back to a wired one.

I did not notice any difference in reception on the 2 phones. The battery life was a little better on the 9000, but I have turned down the brightness and turned off the location on my a900 and that really helps extend the battery life of it. Expandable memory was not a need of mine so it didn't matter to me.

The 2 things I liked better on the 9000 were the use of the standard charger and ringers were louder. Just not enough for me to keep it over the a900.

They both are really good phones you just need to figure out which one you like and go with it.

I agree with you... mostly. I used to agree with you completely...
I have had the Samsung A900 now for about a day and a half now and I must say(knock on wood) that Samsung is a lot better signal-wise than they used to be. My last three phone models before this one read as such Sanyo 8100, Sanyo 5500(VM4500) and Sanyo 8300. I, being from the dirty south, understand your signal strength issues. I have, however, had dropped call issues with my sanyo phones but nowhere near the problems I had with my 1st sprint phone(a Samsung). A Sprint Sales rep told me that you get what you pay for. The upper tier phones such as your A900s and 9000s are going to , 9 times out of 10, perform better than your "free" phones, etc.

Honestly, I feel like a bit of a traitor for even using this Samsung phone. But I do like it. I enjoy the style. Sanyo has been slackin' on the style since the 5500! The blade is also frustrating me because I am so used to Sanyo menus/text messaging. The text icon moves alot slower ,as does the menu overall. The battery on the A900 takes some getting used to as well(keep a charger with you)

I am still very skeptical, however. It may be goin' back. Not sure yet.
