View Full Version : Keep getting signed off AOL Instant Messenger

Ok, I am pretty sure this is a known issue because everyone in my area is having this problem and when I call Sprint, they tell me that the only information they have is that "There is a problem with AOL Instant Messenger being signed on to a fixed device" or something along those lines. There's no other information they can give me and that is dated October 24. The problem is that I will sign onto AOL Instant Messenger with my phone and it will stay signed on for a random amount of time (anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour) and then when I go back to check my messages it displays: "You are no longer signed on." Does anyone know if something is being actively done about this? I'm paying for vision on two phones and the main reason I have vision is for AOL Instant Messenger. I've also had to start paying for text messages because of all the problems with the instant messaging.
I figured this would be a pretty widespread problem but I don't see anyone on the board complaining about it. I have a Toshiba VM-4050 which is not compatible with the software download that you can buy... but does anyone know if that works better than the online version? My girlfriend has a phone that could run it.. does it run in the background so you can still receive phone calls and such while being signed online?
Thanks for any info on this matter.

wow there is a million threads on this. search! DO NOT i repeat DO NOT sign on AIM using the web browser on ur phone anymore. it dont work! the only way right now is to have a AIM app.. which most cant use. or use AIM SMS. which works perfectly. calling sprint on it is a waste of time because they say its on aol.. and aol will say its on sprint. just use AIM sms which works great!! ..and its even better.

I use the AIM application and I must say, it's not the only way to go. The AIM application signs you off as well, though it will keep you on at least about 24-36 hours. Usually no more than that.
Your options are IM Forwarding, which I think is the best way to go: http://aolmobile.aol.com/portal/index.do?rc=true.
Or AIM through SMS: http://www.sprintusers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=74267&highlight=aim+sms. This method is a bit trickier but gives you a little more control than IM Forwarding.

I did perform a search and I couldn't find something that described exactly what I was experiencing. I apologize that you had to be so hugely inconvenienced as to repeat yourself one more time. But if it makes you feel any better, your advice did help quite a bit and I do thank you for that. I performed a search for threads with AOL and AIM in the titles because that was my concern... and no threads that were relevant showed up (at least dated later than October, when this all started).
I guess what I'll do is drop vision on the second phone on my account and just invest in unlimited text messages. Sprint has done nothing but frustrate me and let me down ever since the merger.
