Anyone have any suggestions as to the best bitrate to store songs on a phone in AAC+ format? I've got the new Samsung A900, which only has 47.3 mbs of available space, so I'd like to maximize the number of tracks I can store while not having the songs sound like total crap.
Alternatively, does anyone know what bitrate songs from the Sprint Music Store are encoded at? I haven't used it myself, but I heard the files are pretty small.

Actually I use audacity to make my music loud and clear, and then I run it through I tunes, just make normal AAC 48kbps mono, they sound really loud and plenny clear, everyone thinks it sounds like a radio. Files are about 1.3-1.6 mb in size can fit a decent amount but the sound great, I have a 920 and still do this to reserve room on my memory card for the important thing movies. Still means over 30 on your blade, AAC+ wont be much smaller and probably will not sound as good, mine sound 10 times better than the sprint ones, especially at high volumes.

I've messed with AAC+ and It only comes out about 20k less with low sound quality, or about 20k more with equal sound quality. I converted at every option and it really doesnt make sense to use unless its for low low quality applications.

Sounds like I'd be definitely better off going with AAC, I'll try encoding at 48kbps mono and see how that turns out. Thanks for the help guys!!!

but doesnt the a900 have stereo speakers? so if you encode it in mono, it will be half the size, but only come out of one speaker. :irked: wouldnt it be cool if the phone could put the mono sound through both speakers. not true surround, but still it would be good.

It does put mono out of both speakers ;) Although they are advertised 'stereo' speakers they are still not good enough to produce better sound than mono, or at least not enough to tell by the human ear (and at twice the size.)

Mono's fine as long as I can get it sounding decent, I'm really looking to just get a bunch on the phone so I can have some of my favorite tracks with me when I don't have my ipod on hand. I didn't get a chance to try SeanWasHere and Glenny's suggestions yet (meant to bring my USB cable with me to work but I forgot). I'll def get to it this weekend though and will report back.
How can I turn down the bass on my custom-made AAC ringers?
however, keep in mind that if you plan on using headphones with your 900, having them mono instead of stereo will make a bigger difference than just playing them from the phone. I encode 64 kbps, aac, stereo when I make my ringtones and they sound great. i'm going to try to encode a song the same way, it should sound the same.

Right on aatm... If you plan on converting whole songs to use with a memory card/headset you might want to check the stereo option! :headbang2

Wavepad is a good all in one program for making ringtones or just converting music. You can amplify turn down the bass and all that. Its pretty easy to use too. For the bass trymessing with the low pass filter.

i use 96kbps/stereo. but i "trim" my music down to 15-30secs for use as a ringer. average file size is about 200kb.
FYI, switching to mono does not necessarily reduce the file size in half. usually, it's about 30%-40% reduction. still a significant amount tho.
