Hi guys, if you haven't noticed already, any image you upload that was created in Adobe Photoshop will most likely not be viewable in your "My Contents" area. However, you're still able to set these blank images as screen savers. Why they show up as a screen saver and not for regular viewing, I don't know.
Anyway, the workaround for this is to use Photoshop's File > Save For Web option. I set mine at jpeg maximum. Compression is defaulted to 60 with this option. I wouldn't bother changing anything as it looks perfectly fine on the phone. Saved and uploaded the image to the phone. The phone now allows you to see the image without setting it as a screen saver.
Hope this helps you Photoshop addicts.

For myself, I use Macromedia Fireworks for all my screensavers and it works great! All I do is open up any image, resize and crop, and then export as JPEG. You need to export and NOT save b/c then it saves it as a PNG. This method works perfect for me! :)

Do gifs work on the a900 like they did on the a800?

just wonderin', but when you said an image, created in PS, couldn't be viewable on tha a900, what were you savin' tha file as?

well, FW is more web-sided than PS. considerin' tha a900 accepts web-safe quality images. it's kool that tha a800 can handle straight .jpg's from PS. go a800!

Yes. But they're finicky.

Merely saving as a JPEG causes a problem. PNG's work from PS. As stated, Fireworks is a fine method, but I'm a PS gal myself. All I do is create my image in Photoshop (CS2), save the PSD and then go to File/Edit In Image Ready. Image opens in Image Ready (and closes is PS, hence the saving the PSD) and then I just go to Layers/Flatten Image and then File/Export Layers as Files and save it as a JPEG. Much smaller file, and the phone displays them just fine.

QuickTime's PictureViewer is another free alternative that gives more options than Paint for converting...

So far I have been lucky with the pics, although a few have come up black. Will have to try the "save to web" option. Can anyone tell me how I can use images saved in the Mass Storage part of the phone as screensavers? I can view them in any folder I have placed them in, but I have no "assign to" option? I was hoping to separate them from the regular "my albums" where I store pictures. Thanks in advance!

This has been covered a number of times. In the DCIM folder, just create a subfolder called "Wallpapers" or whatever and place your images in there.
* It's also worth noting that if you have Photoshop CS2 or CS, Image Ready comes bundled with it. If you save your JPEGs from Image Ready instead of PS, your files will be exponentially smaller. That's not an exaggeration, either. Compare a 6KB Image Ready file to 72KB Photoshop file. No difference in quality.

Thanks Laursifer. Here's the thing. Within the DCIM folder, I can see all of the jpg's easily. However, my only options are to rotate the images. I have no "assign" option whatsoever. Anyone else having or had this issue?
Please advise. Thanks!

Sounds like you're going through the File Manager, which will open the image from the Piscel viewer. Access the image by going to Menu/Pictures/My Albums/In Phone and the folder you made should be in there.

I've tried imageready with JPEG maximum and can't get this to work with a 490K file. Do I need to change the resolution of this image to be smaller?

You don't have to use Image Ready if you don't want to. You can use Photoshop's "Save for Web" option under the File menu (it's "powered" by Image Ready, so you're essentially doing the same exact thing).
The image MUST be 240hx320w.

Hey guys, what is the actual process of shrinking an image to fit to the a900? I know how to set the canvas size to the proper dimensions, but how do you shrink the image itself?

With the image open in Photoshop, go to Image/Image Size.
I did that, but it skews the image. im not very handy with photoshop...sorry for the incompetence ;)

Not a problem! I didn't explain that very thoroughly.
Let's say I have an image that is 800x600 (wider than it is tall). Here are the steps I will take:
Go to Image/Image size and change the height to 320. I am now left with an image of size 427w x 320h.
Now, I will go to Image/Canvas Size and change the width to 240.
Sometimes, doing something like this will compromise your image. Let's say I have a wallpaper of a pretty girl laying across the screen. Cropping the canvas width might cut out too much that I'd like to see. So... in that case, instead of changing the height to 320 like I did in step 1, I will change the width to 240. Then I will go to Image/Canvas Size and change the height to 320. I'll make the background color something that matches the image, and add bars to the top and bottom of the pic for "decoration." Then if I'm so inclined, I'll add text (such as the name of the model or whoever). Something like these...

basically, you said instead of changing the height to 320px first, then width 240px next, you're changin' tha width to 240px first, then tha height to 320px, which sounds like tha same thing backwards?
also, keepin' in mind that 800x600 ain't (yes, ain't) proportional to 240x320 (or even 320x240). so, if you're goin' to unproportionally squeeze tha leftover 427px width (no matter which order) to 240px, you should have a squashed up image width-wise.

whatever tha case (movin' forward), here's my method that will work out for you.
http://static.flickr.com/72/202630852_21be2ce073_o.jpg
we'll work with tha above image
1\\ run PS (or IR or FW, whatever)
2\\ CTRL + N (for new canvas)
3\\ quickly set dimensions to 240x320 (done deal!) see image (http://i7.tinypic.com/21jx6yd.jpg)
4\\ CTRL + O (to open your image to edit), or doube-click on grey background area of PS see image (http://i7.tinypic.com/21jxbt3.jpg)
5\\ drag your image (to edit) to tha 240x320 pallete
6\\ maximize tha 240x320 pallete (or drag a corner out)
7\\ CTRL + T (for free transformation) on tha image layer. see image (http://i7.tinypic.com/21jy5xz.jpg) first, check layer tab/pallete to make sure you have image-layer selected
8\\ drag a corner in. hold SHIFT while doin' so, so it constrains tha image proportionally
you should be able to figure it out from there. doin' it this way gives you a lot of freedom with tha image -- as far as size and tha area of tha original image you want to see. tha picture in step 7 should give you a good idea of what this method is about. when you're all done...
9\\ CTRL + SHIFT + S (to save image "as .jpeg")
some examples...

girl to right (original size, but cropped)
http://i7.tinypic.com/21jxj5x.jpg
girl to left (reduced image and cropped)

girl in middle (reduced image and cropped)

Damn, you are a tall ass filipino...lol
How do you add those bars that laursifer did to those images? Maybe I need to take a graphic design class or something...
Ok, I figured out the bar thing, and I got the image that I want to the right size. Now another problem. When I saved the image to my phone, the image was all pixelized. It looked fine in PS, and the size in the phone is correct. Size-wise, the image shows up like its supposed to, but the quality is crap. It looks like how the image would look if I were to zoom in a bunch, but the size of the image is fine...anyone know whats up?
Took a crack at making an avatar on PS! Check it out guys! I did it!! WOOO HOOO :headbang2 (I know its simple, but hey, its a start!)

do you mean bars if your image didn't cover tha entire 240x320 area? you can just make tha background (layer) a solid color with tha paint bucket tool. if you meant tha thin lines/bars, you can make a path or an easier way for you would be to just use like a paintbrush tool and draw one. you can also hold SHIFT to contraint your line into a perfectly straight line.
i've tested some images on my buddies blade before (usin' PS) and on another SUer's, and so far they have been fine. can you send me tha original image, and tell me what you want done to it? i really have to test it out so i could explain better what you should or shouldn't do.

I think what was wrong was I wasn't saving to web or whatever that option is. I did that for another wallpaper I made and it came out just fine. Here's the finshed product:

You gotta pay attention to the jargon, because you just repeated exactly what I had said. There are two places to change the image. Image Size & Canvas Size. Image Size scales down the image, while Canvas Size actually crops it. If you go back and re-read it, taking that into account, it will make much more sense.
Your way works, too... but if you do it the way I had said, it doesn't squash up the image, either. Take a look at the Image file menu and you'll see where those Image Size and Canvas Size options are. They do two completely different things.

my bad i must have missed what you said. i thought you were sayin' image/image, and then image/image again. i re-read it and noticed you were sayin' image/image, and then image/canvas. even if that method doesn't squash tha image, there still is no flexibility -- you're automatically settin' it to just one pixel-width. with tha method i posted, you quickly set a 240x320 image area. then with free-transformation, you quickly place and/or resize image directly within that 240x320 image area to your every possible liking. no worries with playin' with numbers. you just look at your image area and adjust your image accordingly. basically, just like a WSYIWIG, right?
it seems easier, and he seems to have a hang of it now, to anybody who has no method that they're used to, to begin with.

OK, how about this... we can design custom wallpapers but how about that front LCD.. I know I'd love a crack at skinning that but cant find any skins or a template for it. Might even see about the size for the caller ID images but I cant even find the resolution for the thing.

I dont know if there is an easy way to do that right now :(. I say "no easy way" because nothing's impossible, but it can still get complicated. Maybe there will be something like that for the A900M...but AFAIK you can't skin the front LCD any more than just setting some of your content to show up (i.e. your screen saver).

Well, the A900 is screwed up as far as that is concerned. It doesn't let you use a separate wallpaper for the Sub LCD than the Main LCD. So it's kind of worthless. I know on my A940, you could do separate ones. But they never fixed that sort-of-bug on the A900.
I've noticed that if you use the same pic for the main and sub LCDs, that the quality of the pic on the sub LCD is pretty bad. I'd rather just have one of the clocks on the sub LCD. My fav is the blue one...day of the month, week, and time. I'd honestly have that since the front of my phone is basically my pocketwatch.
