I tried my A940 as a modem last night for the 1st time with my apple powerbook. I have the $25 dollar vision plan and called sprint this morning to see if I was charged or not. The women said to use the phone as a modem is an additional $25 plan but when she checked my usage, the 396kb I used last night showed up as regular usage (as if I did it from my phone). So I did not have any charges on my account and she said she would put a note to not charge me for the 396kb if it did change. I want to know if other people are being charged to use their phone as a modem? I have a feeling it showed up as regular phone use because I have an apple computer and it might have not been able to distinguish the difference from phone to laptop. However she did say she would not be able to know for certain until my next invoice. I am going to try it again in a few days and call back to see if it charged me. What do you guys think?

yeah, technically using your phone as a modem is illegal, as it says in the terms you are not allowed to do it. that wasnt a smart thing to do by calling them and asking if it showed up. thats like illegally downloaded mp3's and then calling the riaa to see if they caught you yet.

on the other hand, when i had my 7400, i used it once in a while as a modem and never got charged. as long as you dont use it a lot, id say less than 10-15 mb per month, you should be alright. but dont take my word for it, because you may get caught now that you told them about it

In retrospect it was stupid of me to ask what I did, however the women seemed fine with everything. If you have unlimited data included in your vision plan I think it is ridiculous that you need another plan to utilize the same data on your laptop. The women I spoke with did not sound like the smartest either, she was like: yeah I spoke to a tech guy and he’s not sure why it didn’t show up as different data usage.

Also, worst case is they charge you 1 cent per kb or w/e the ratio is, right?

.02 per kb. And you WILL rack up a big bill very fast. Not sure what you did to only get 396kb downloaded, loading webpages will boost that amount up quick. And often this type of data doesn't show up immediately.

I ran a speed test from dslrepots.com then signed off.

i totally agree with you. ive said this before, if sprint had a cheap option to get a small amount of modem data (maybe 5 or 10 bucks a month for say 10-25mb) i would totally pay for it. but since i only use it once in a while (never anymore since i have a 5600) im not gonna pay for the full tethering plan.
