I thought this might be a good idea for a thread, possibly even a sticky since we're all wanting to see images taken with the phone's camera. Please post your phone model, resolution, indoor/outdoor, and if indoor if flash was used.

Example:

Phone: A900
Resolution: 1.3mpx
Lighting: outdoor

Cuz it's a samsung forum, I guess if someone wanted to move it over to the general forum or something they could rename it and include other brands.

i see you live by me.

anyway, have you been dealin' with tha Sprint store(s) to get your handset? if so, which one? tha Best Buy on PCH & Hawthorne had tha a940's for $150 (w/2yr agreement) instead of Sprint's $250 (w/2yr agreement). but if you don't do tha 2yr agreement, you could still get Best Buy's rebate (so tha representative said).

i'm just done dealin' with tha Sprint stores here in my location. tha one in Torrance, Manhattan Beach, and Culver City have rejected to replace my first a940 handset for it being defective. they would give me tha excuse that they didn't have any in and to come back next week. when i called and asked if they had one (and they did), i would rush down there and ask them again if they still had it. they would be excited to make a sell and bring tha phone out and when i'd tell them i wanted to have my defective handset exchanged, they would give me tha excuse that they can't this and that and i would have to deal with Telesales. it finaly took a month to get another a940 from Telesales with so many screw-ups along tha way. it was THE most horrible experience i've ever gone through with Sprint, even worse than when a representative from retention jacked my business account up and had to cancel it (as they said) and start me over with a new consumer account. ughh...

okay, enough of that. sorry.

but check if they got tha a900 there at Best Buy.

Ahhh yeahhaa...the Southbay!

I haven't dealt with the Sprint stores as far as my phone goes...all through Ebay adding add'l line for the phone.

Sorry to hear you've gotten the go around at the stores. I usually hit the Torrance store and don't have problems.

I did like the a940 but the blurry pics were killing me...I'm not steady enough to take pics with it. I'm hoping the a900 isn't the same. Guess we'll see....

Nope... no special settings at all. The thing I've noticed with the 900 and 940 is that the 900 seems to take better "point and shoot" pictures hands-down, but the 940 takes more vivid pictures. Still like the 900 better, just because it's less work :) Macro was used on both of those 940 pics and my hands were shaky (had like 6 cups of coffee in me).

Just because a few pictures don't look "perfect" you make a comment that it "sucks". If I remember correctly you have said the same thing with other camera phones except the 535. I remeber when I had the 535 sometimes the pictures looked really good for a camera phone and others looked terrible but I didn't make a comment that the camera sucked. I think your expecting a little to much out of today's camera phones.

Nice! I'm glad to hear the 900 is more of a "point and shoot," as I got pretty used to my VM4500. I could take a great macro pic with the 940 but I do shake a little and found it hard to take regular pics without using both hands and holding my breath!

so.. are any of these Samsung's actually point-and-shoot?

I'm used to my SCP-5500 where I push and hold the camera button for 1/4 second, take a perfectly clear (0.3mp, though,) picture, and have the phone back in my pocket by the time I hit 1.5 seconds....

any phones hold a candle to that?

maybe the 9000?

I love the way the 940 looks, but if you have to be a surgeon to hold the dang camera, then it's all for nothing...

plus, do any have the camera on the back of the unit like the good ol' 5500?

havent used the 9000, altho i would've liked to have tried the phone out before i got my a900.
as for the 940 the camera is great but like you said you have to be damn near a surgeon to take a pic with the thing, however the pics come out fantastic.
as for the camera being on the front, obviously not on the 940, its on the side
dunno about the 9000 but im pretty sure it is
and the a900 the camera rotates from front to back!

Now there's an oxymoron ;)

Like Bida said, the A900 is pretty much point & shoot and the camera is one of those ultra-swanky rotating barrel types. It takes a bit longer than the 5500 to load, probably because it's loading a better camera with more features. Still, it takes NOWHERE near as long as the A940 to start AND you can start it very easily with the phone closed. It's pretty rockin'.

okay. yeah, you have to have a really steady hand to take non-blurred pics with tha a940. or you can just set it on a steady platform and set tha timer on it. i'm gettin' ready to leave; i'm about to pick up a920 today.

what's the deal with the sammys taking forever to take the shot, (which in-turn, causes these horribly-blurry photos?)

is it a slow cmos processor? slow cpu overall? what's the deal? seems that this is the same problem on every sammy I've ever held... and actually, all my friends with motorolas, and phones from other carriers have the same issues... the only ones I'm not sure of, are the high-end nokias.

The A920 takes pretty good pics to me. I have a few more. But I think what causes the blurry photos is that you're never really sure when the phone is taking the picture, since it's not as soon as you hit the button.

Well, the A940 has a slow shutter speed, hopefully they'll fix this but it still is a really cool picture.

The Samsung A940 actually has a great camera, the focus capabilities are great, especially the Macro. If you have a pretty steady hand or take pictures in broad daylight, this phone will surpass all.

I'll post my better pictures later.

ughh... i'm so frustrated and upset now. i couldn't get my a920 today. tha reason for goin' to get an a920 was because i was given a $150 rebate/credit towards tha purchase of a new handset. i was given this rebate for not receivin' my $150 rebate when i got my a940 tha second time (long story). i called this morning (after calling about receiving a 10% discount for being a member with a credit union) and asked a cust' care rep' to get an a920 but he told me i couldn't do it over tha phone and that it would have to be purchased at tha store. i always call and ask a second rep' for a so-to-say second opinion. they told me tha same thing and asked if they would see tha same message(s) in my account. tha second rep' told me yeah and that he would note tha account tha procedure on how tha Sprint store rep' should handle my $150 rebate/credit. he told me to go ahead to tha Sprint store and purchase any phone i wanted. anyway, tha store denied me. i called cust' care from tha store and tha rep' told me that there was no notes, directions, or any sort of mentioning of a $150 rebate/credit towards a new handset. then i raised hell and all tha cust' care rep' did was just give me 2 weeks of credit towards monthly service. i asked to speak to somebody with higher athority like her supervisor and they gave me a number that they said these people would better assist me. when i entered it into my 535 handset, it showed that it was retentions (which i have saved in my phoenbook).

ever since they first cancelled my business account by mistake and stared me on a new consumer account, it has just been downhill since. i can believe that their cust' svc. can be really bad, but i can't believe that it can happen to me, hand happen to me constantly, one after tha other.

It most likely will never show up "in the computer". If you get to a supervisor, what you probably will end up with is a $150 credit on your billing. I went through the samething one time for over 11 months. It was always going to be "in the computer", but it just never seemed to appear in the store's computer for some reason. Then when you call back CS, and talk to a new person, it will have magically disappeared out of their computer system also. Finally after 11 months of coninuely magically appearing and disappearing out of the system, I finally talked to a supervisor. He told me that they all had more or less lied to me, that once you do the ESN thingie, and it enters it without a rebate, you can kiss your in store rebate goodbye. I don't know if that is true or not, but he stated he couldn't even do it -- but gave me the $150 off on my billing. After 11 months of misery trying to get it handled, I didn't even argue, and just took the credit. That was the first time I ever tried to use a rebate with Sprint, and the last time. Now I just buy them straight out.

yeah, either i'll be gettin' my rebate from Best Buy or from some other 3rd party authorized Sprint dealer from now on. but tha thing is if tha handset ever has a defect (and all my first handsets have always had a defect), then it will be a beeyotch to have it replaced. almost as worst as if i had bought a defective phone directly from Sprint and replacin' it with them (as far as all my horrible experiences).

can someone explain this to me? What is the main difference between the a800/a940 2.0mp, and my 8 year-old 2.1mp polaroid digicam???

it still produces pics at least 5x clearer, and lowlight is much better...

not tryin' to bash these phones... but can someone step in and help me out here? they claim "two mega-pixels"... but I guess it doesn't matter if you 'store' 2mp, if the source image (the image that is outputted by the cmos/ccd is crap to start with...)

dunno, that's just what I've conjured up... but I have no idea...

but comparing the 940 to my 2.1mp digicam is like night and day... someone please enlighten me... thanks.

i'll take a stab at it...

a quick few would be: better lens, faster shutter speed, better flash, better image sensor, and tha fact that it's an actual digicam -- not somethin' added on top of a phone. tha a940 takes great pics, i have to say. it's just tha shutter speed needs to be faster, or you just have to hold very, very still.

Better glass and a bigger image sensor are the main differences between a real digital camera and a cell phone cam. The image sensors in these phones are probably about the size of a pinhead. That's not very much area to collect light. The more surface area, the more light. The more light, the less time needed to get a good picture.

well, larger surface area doesn't make for more light. dependin' on tha amount of light comin' in, tha image sensor (large or small) collects a lot or it doesn't. however, i see what you mean. but tha larger tha aperture (iris), tha more light comin' in. and dependin' on tha lens vs tha amount of light comin' in, that can then affect depth of field. anyway, that's another story.

as far as more light, less time... imagine night shots between a digicam and a phone-cam, "the more light, the less time needed to get a good picture" doesn't apply. if you set your actual digicam up for night-mode, you'd have to be very, very still anyway as tha shutter speed is set slower. for that reason, not enough light comes in so tha shutter speed is set slower to allow enough light to come in, so because of that, you just have to hold very, very still while it takes tha picture.

A800 is the best camera phone, it's just a real shame Sprint's not gonna keep it up to snuff with new software and EV-DO. EV-DO could really help with uploading those 2mpx pictures, which is sooooo slow.

Apparently, both are CCD, but I'm not sure what separates them. I have yet to see full resolution pictures from the A940, though, that are the same calibur as those from the A800.

Couple things though, I don't know why they wouldn't put a QVGA screen on the A940 when they did on the A800. And I also agree that these phones are definitely not made for quick snapshots, which really stinks, because if I actually want to take a scenic picture or something, I wouldn't use the phone to begin with, I would use a real camera. These should have settings to take candid or quick photos, as that's what most people use them for.

When you say these phones not being able to take quick snap shots you mean the 800 and the 940 right? I know I can take quick snap shots with the A900 and 9000.

Exactly. That's why stuffing all these megapixels into these phones seems pointless to me when you have to treat it like a digital camera to take quick photos. Cameras in phones became popular because of their simplicity and being able to take the quick candid photos, not for a digital camera replacement.

I will admit at first I didn't think it was that big of deal with the 940 but after taking more pictures it bothered me.

I will probably end up settling with the 9000 or the next-gen... even it it's only 1.3mp... because I want that lightning-fast reaction time... and the low-light seems acceptable...

but I had a digicam for those really high-res situations... these are supposed to be 'fun.' and the a800/940/920 seem to lack, harshly in that aspect...

so do the motorola v300/v400 and the razer...

it's like Sanyo is the only one to make a decent camera software integration...

my brothers PPC-6600 takes like 8 seconds to open up the damn camera... pathetic

Aint that the truth. I love the camera on the a800 (one reason I kept it on my third line). But it is a pita for those quick shots.
I have to say as fast as the a900 gets the shots off, it does a fine job in light or dark.

try this. pull the camera out of your pocket, snap the picture (clear,) and have it back in your pocket within 2.5 seconds...

oh wait, don't most samsungs take at least that long just to open the camera software?

cuz I think that's what he's referring to about "quick snapshots"... like when you're not using a tri-pod

Even in California people are rude...Ive held doors for people who have not said thank you thats when I loudly say YOU ARE VERY WELCOME...50% that jump starts their manners and they reply thank you. Remember parents TEACH your children manners...I always get comments from servers because my teenage sons constantly use "thank you" and "please" when we dine out.

SIDENOTE: When I was at the Cheesecake Factory last night ...I watched a couple let their 3 to 4 year old son walk around people dining outside on the terrace as they waited on their table and enjoyed the sights of the city...It begins at home!!!

Thats the point I dont say it rudely...it is as sweet as pie and loud enough for that person to hear. If someone holds the door for you...Natually you say Thank you without someone needing to remind you. People hold the door for me all the time and I have never missed saying thank you ...why?? Because it is in my nature and I was taught"manners" You are NEVER too busy to say a kind THANK YOU when someone is giving you a hand or showing you kindness...

If you lower the resolution in the 940, it takes just as quick and clear point and click shots as the lower resolution cameras, including the 900. With the 940, you have the option of taking a higher quality shot, which does take time to set up. But it's an option that the 900 and the 920 do not have.

Also at 200, outside in daylight, the 940 shots are as quick as the 900 at 1.3

i can understand sayin' or doin' somethin' to tha wrong person, like when a little kid (much younger than i) threw a bottle at a car i was drivin'... i had gone up to him and asked what that was for. of all things to happen, he and his friends circled me and pulled their hand guns out and asked: "are you tripping or something?" my cousin who was around called ran to my friends to run over and one of them yelled out "cops" and so everybody scattered as they ran away.

to this day, i can't forgive or forget that kid. it still upsets me how somethin' like that can happen especially from immature kids and it also changed me in how you can't even stand your ground to certain people. so i just live in let be, for tha most part. i've seen many ppl killed for tha most stupidest things.

of course it's gonna look better when it's smaller... because none of these cameras TRULY output the number of mexapixels that they claim... so if you choose a medium resolution, it looks much crisper..

so far every camera phone I've seen looks, at least, slightly blurry at their standard resolution...

well...

let's say for ikandi's 1.3MP a900. if she were to set it to 1.3MP, her image-resolution would be gigantic. tha resolution for that should be like 1280x960. i'm sure you've seen that with tha images posted within this thread. that 1280x960 (rounded up) is about 1.3MP.

what i was referrin' to in my post to her, was if she had resized her 1.3MP images down to 640x480 because of how nice her images looked compared to tha oher images (of tha same model) within this thread. it looked like there was a lot of info within her 640x480 images im comparison to tha others i've been seein'.

And what I'm saying is that when you set the camera to 640x480, it's doing the same thing as down-sizing it later... which makes it look much sharper...

even when I take a medium-resolution shot on my 5500, it looks much sharper..

the only way to compare them is a full-resolution... which, for the most part, look blurry (more pixellated, actually...) Like all these cameras are artificially increasing their megapixel count by 'stretching' the image... it's not unheard of, and explains why some 1.0 mp cells have better images than a lot of 1.3...

I think the 940 definitely does that, becuase it usually takes awful pics even compared to the 920 or 900... when it should be superior.
