Asking for a friend:

I have a friend who has a Sanyo 8200...He has a four phones on his Sprint PCS Fair & Flexible Family Plan. The third and forth line on the account commonly receive sms text messages from friends who know the cell phone number. As everyone here knows there is a charge of $0.10 per message sent or received. SMS is absolutely no use to them and want it removed because Sprint charges for the incoming messages. Sprint told them that this feature could be shut off so that outgoing text messages couldn't be sent and incoming messages would basically go into a black hole. Needless to say, he has spent many hours on the phone with Sprint. He talked to a tech and the tech removed the ip basic and the pcs vision profile. What else can be done so that text messages aren't received on the phones? Is there a way that I can turn off data services on his phone via a programming menu or something of that nature so the text message(s) never gets to the phone and the account doesn't get charged for opening it?!? He has talked to the local Sprint Store...They all say it can be done, but don't know how. Sprint Tech claims it is all taken care of, but casual usage charges continue to accumulate. It is kind of a continuous loop of getting absolutely nowhere.

Thanks! :)

There is no way to block incoming text messages. I have already spoke to tech support about this as I wanted to block them from my Grandparents account. They said they are working on it, but it's not an option as of now. They said the only thing you can do is call in every month and get a credit for the incoming text messages.
You can block them from "entering" your cell phone via your online account, but the billing system still picks them up.

When Sprint programs a phone they don't have an option to disable or enable all data services such as vision and sms texting?!?

Maybe we are talking about two different things here, and if we are, I apologise, but I have two lines on my account. My phone (the primary one) doesn't have unlimited text messaging because, for me, text messaging is a PITA. So I get charged 10¢ if I send a message from my phone. But the second phone which my son uses has unlimited text messaging because he is a text-a-holic. :p Anyway, he periodically sends me a text message from his phone to my phone and I have never been charged for an incoming text message. Is that a mistake and should I keep my mouth shut?

I just signed up for Sprint yesterday and called them to eliminate any/all text messages/charges becasue I never use them/want them. It's pretty simple -

Log ont sprint.com
Click on My Online Tools
That menu expands - Click on Text Messaging
That menu expands - Click on Settings and Preferences

On the page that comes up look under:
Message types:
Check or uncheck boxes to determine the types of SMS messages others can send to you

Uncheck all three boxes. Your text messaging will stop.

a friend told me that sprint customers are not charged for incoming text messages from other sprint customers. i dont know if its true or not, but if it is, it would explain why you havent been charged for text messages from your son.

He did that before he ever talked to Sprint and that didn't work either. :irked:

Added a 4th line to my account for my 13yr old in October. Day after we got it, she started receiving tons of text spam messages on it. Called Sprint got credit for messages & they said the would block all text messages to that # and we have not received a single message since then.

FYI: to stop spam messages (because this happened to me when i added a line for my treo, friggin' horoscopes, jokes, blah blah), simply respond with STOP. This works wonderfully. You should get a message sent back soon saying that your number is removed from their list.

*whisper* if you look at details of a sprint text messaging pack on the web or in a pamphlet, it says that text messages received from another sprint phone are free.

Nope, not true... You will still receive text messages.

Yeah...Hopefully in the future Sprint has an easier way of enabling or disabling such options.

Thanks All! :)

To make a long story short I was on the phone with a sprint rep this weekend and she said there was a way to block all incoming and outgoing texts.

Hey ! :p LoL

A regular CSR wouldn't really know, if there were a way to block them, they couldn't do it anyway. A Tech would have to.
