View Full Version : Mpeg-4 playback on 5600
I've been searching this site for a while and i've read all about the 3gp video conversions using all kinds of different methods but i have yet to read anything about mpeg4 conversions. According to Sanyo's instruction manual: The phone's media player supports the following file formats- MPEG4, 3GPP2, and 3GPP. Now, i'm not that new to video converting, i convert all kinds of DVD's and videos for my girlfriends iPod using both QT Pro and Nero Recode. Both encode with the newest MPEG 4 codec. So here's my questions (1) Will the 5600 play back mpeg4 and (2) Does anybody have any experience using either of these programs making MPEG4's for the 5600? I would like to start with the mpeg's that i make for the iPod and then do a second conversion on those to change to resolution and other settings to make it compatible for the 5600 but i haven't gotten this to work right yet. What do you think?

Hmmm... I would venture to say that's a mistake in Sanyo's instruction manual, but I could be wrong. Like you said as well, I've not read anything on this forum (that I recall at least) about the 5600 being able to play MPEG4 videos. ...And those would be some pretty BIG files, even if you have a 1GB card. I personally don't know if it would be worth it, as I think 3GP is more than okay. To each his own, of course.
If we don't get any helpful response here in a day or two, I will bump and redirect the thread to the Sanyo forum so you can try your luck there.

3gp is the same as mp4. if you read the tutorials on this site, you use a program to convert a video to 3gp, then you rename the file to .mp4 so the 5600 can read it correctly. as long as the resolution and the bitrate is correct, the 5600 will play it. and mp4 files are actually very small, since the 5600 has a small resolution. most of my movies only take up about 200-250 MB.

So basically you convert an MPEG or AVI to 3GP and then rename it to MP4 for the 5600 to read it? It won't read 3GP files??? I don't remember reading about that, but that sucks.
And my referencing the file size was assuming the OP wanted his source file on his phone without having to convert it, in which case it would be MUCH larger. The way you're talking, the thing's already being converted into a 3GP, and then renamed, so of course it will be smaller. Maybe I misunderstood the OP.
So i can just use Nero and convert to MPEG4 with a resolution of 176 by 144 and it should work just fine? Sounds too easy but i'll give it a shot.
