I just got a 6601 smart phone for free. everything works. it's pretty much brand new. never even been activated yet. lol
what should i do with it? if i sell it, it'll only sell for approx $200-$250. i already use a pm 325, and i personally think the 6601 is really overkill for me (i'm a senior in high school  ) a lot of kids @ my school have pda's (i live in a very rich suburb  ), but i mean c'mon! *** is a high school student gonna do with a pda?
help
Also, my school has a wifi network set up (my school was one of the 1st in the nation to sign a contract with toshiba to have the students use tablet pc's with wifi  ). if i use this phone with my sprint account, and buy a wifi card thingy, do i need vision to go on the internet? if not, does that mean i can keep my regular sprint accout w/o any extras and still access the internet @ school? :scare:

It's a great phone for movies (TivoToGo on an SD card), use it for an MP3 player, zillions of games are out for PPC, streaming satellite radio . . .

All you need is a SD wifi card and you'll be able to access anything that your school allows. You can use the phone that way without have it set up on your Sprint account at all. If you want to use it as a phone and have Vision on your current account, you wouldn't need to change anything to use Vision on the 6601 - just have to do an ESN swap. - sheureka

i don't have vision on my pm 325 right now.
so should i use this? it seems a bit clunky for me. i like my phones small and portable. hmmmm

Actually you can, sort of. Attach said wifi card, install Skype for PPC and you have yourself a voip phone that you can use whenever you are connected via wireless. It is independent of the CDMA (spri :) nt) phone service.

Just download activesync 3.8 from Micro$oft, that's all you need for software.

does the os ever need updates like in normal windows? and also, is there a way to back up my stuff? like back up the os as well? i don't have the original cd, and who knows when this thing might crash. how do i back up the os and the stuff on it?
about tcpmp, i installed it, and it asked me to do a soft boot. wat's that?

Soft boot: Stick the pointy end of the stylus into the hole marked 'RESET'. Do NOT press anything else. This will be roughly the same as rebooting a desktop or laptop. Nothing is changed on the device, it just restarts the 6601.
Hard boot: Press and hold the power button. While doing that, stick the pointy end of the stylus into the 'RESET' hole. This will restore the device to the 'out of the box' state. It's like using an installation disk on a destop/laptop. DON'T do this unless the 6601 stops working right. You'll wipe out anything you've done since you got it.
Hope this explains it to you.
BTW, there's a program on the device called xBackup. It'll do fine for your backup needs, but only on the same ROM install - that's what the OS patch is called. Search this forum for more info on that.

the leather ones look elegant, but if i get a call, i have to take it out of the pouch. kinda annoying. i like the metal cases. opinions?

i just called in to get it activated. they told me to wait 4 hours. does it really take that long?
centauress
11-18-2005, 12:24 PM
For surfing, yeah. But if you did the activation correctly and shut off the old phone, you're able to use the 6601 as a phone immediately. The 4 hours is for provisioning Vision services. Personal experience on this one, I've been using PDAs enough to know.
