So far, so far...

No Bluetooth, no Mac support, no third-party updates...yet. ;) Sound is great for voice, VERY fast and screen is really sharp/crisp. Voice SMS is pretty cool, but learning to navigate this thing will take a day or so. Photos look nice. Earbuds suck, but work.

The PowerVision upgrade does include a few channels of multimedia, but I was really not happy after the full-court-press from the sales staff about the package change for SprintTV and IT DOESN'T INCLUDE NEARLY ANY OF THE CONTENT that is all subscription-based. Ok, cable tv is one thing, but there should be a package for, let's say, 5 and/or 10 of these services like AP, CNN, MSNBC, NBC, Weather Channel, and then 5 Sirius or something like that. Looking around the navigation options shows how to find a few things that actually are there, too. Only one area here that gets EVDO, but it is sweet!

There was already a software update to 1.008 from 1.007! Made a difference in performance and animation speed. Def. get the 1Gb miniSD card!

Oh yea, fits the 6500 case PERFECTLY.

I like it.

The middle rez setting and the fine mode are better than most mobiles in this price range, I think. Def. better than the 8300 which I returned under the 14 day rule. It's no camera, but it is still better than most phones for the money.

well i compared it to my 5600 which is basically the same phone and they were supposed to fix the camera but the camera was the exact same and that was crappy. I also dont want it b/c it has no BT, havent seen the 940 yet but its 2MP and has BT with EVDO pretty hot and tempting.

The camera on the 9000 is better than the 5600. The 9000 has a night mode and the 5600 doesn't. If you take the same low light picture with a 5600 and a 9000 the 5600 will look very grainy and the 9000 will look decent. I think some 5600 users say bad things about the 9000 because they just spent over $400 on a phone just 4 monts ago and now a better phone (9000) comes out and it's only $379.

Software update? The phone updated itself or you took it to a sprint store?

The 9000 has the FOTA (Firmware Over The Air) option in it. The option can be intiated from the menu. Apparently all EVDO phones are suppose to have this option as a standard feature now per Sprint.

The low light option does not make the pic any better and does not make it so you can see what the person or image is that you looking at. I didnt pay over $400 for mine i got mine on here and payed $200. But the makers of that phone should have changed the camera they should not have put the SAME FREAKIN camera as the 5600 and just put a stupid low light option *** is that. Its stupid thats what it is, you pay close to $400 you should have a good camera were you could buy a Sanyo 8200 and the camera is better than both the 9000 and 5600.

I hope everyone who thinks about this phone compares the cameras between the phones so they can see that they didnt do S*** to fix it or improve it at all. It makes me mad that i waited for this phone for so long and it sucks. EVDO is nice but i can get that out of the 940, and also have BT and a 2 MP camera. So bye bye Sanyo!

Sounds like you're really mad! LOL. But isn't the camera on both 1.3 megapixels? The whole point on this phone coming out was not to dramatically change or upgrade the friggin camera, it's about EV-DO! And for you to say the 8200 camera is better than the 5600 and 9000, what are you smokin? I guess you think the 8300 camera is better too.

Point is people want options, if you got your 5600 for $200 then wooray for you. Like it has been said so many times before, if you want a nice camera, buy a camera.

I'll agree Sanyo should've put a 2 megapixel camera and bluetooth in the 90000. The night mode on the 9000 does make the low light pictures look better than the 5600 and your still saying it doesn't. Do you have a 9000? If you look at the display when change the night mode you can clearly tell it adds more light to the display which will add more light to the picture. These are the only low light pictures I have so far but can you honestly say that the 5600 can take a picture as good as these? If I still had my 5600 I would prove my point.

I just think its annoying that they come out with a new improved 5600 but didnt fix the main problem. The speaker is the same just because it is EVDO doesnt mean that it shouldnt have a better camera. And the 1.3 MP can take good pics, i have seen some verizon phones with 1.3 and they are alot better in dark pics. I just dont want people to pump this phone up and over rate it b/c it shouldnt be. The phone should've been better they wanted to hurry up and release it and they screwed up, I really like sanyo too.

And i compared my 5600 to a 8200 in a dark taking pics and it blew mine away. You could actually see the persons face where with my phone you cannot, and that will be the same with the 9000.

The pic of your radio you cant see anything but the lights that are lit up on the radio. You should be able to take a pic of all black with the flash and it should show up. Thats not the case.

U jus lost all your cred. of your argument when u said "WILL be the same with the 9000' LOL @ u judgin a phone u dont have. if u tweek the settings. (turn nighmode/raise the brightness/lower white balance) you should achieve a nice dark pic. I dont own it but ive played with on for a while. Your paying for a great phone with a nice lil cam on it. Others Co's are backwards. they put out GREAT CAMS on average or buggy phones. Execpt Moto. They put out crappy phones and crappy cams. (MP220)

Just really tested the camera. Mid size at Fine resolution does a good job if you are VERY still. Actually, I was surprised by how sharp. Once my 1Gb miniSD card arrives (found at eBuyer.com for 66.00 for the SanDisk!), I'll play with it a bit more. Again, better than most phones but not a full out camera. Video is not thrilling.

I don't know why people say the camera is bad. It's a cell phone. I know other phones have a better camera, but if you want a nice looking picture, get a digital camera.

Why would you consider it when the camera is so terrible? Isnt that the reason you got rid of the 5600 at first?

I have a 9000 as well and had a 5600 beforehand...as a matter of fact I still own both and have compared the cameras...lockdawg, you are completely off base...the 9000 camera is 10x better than the 5600...there is NO comparison...

for those looking at this phone, it kicks *****...the camera should not even be a factor...it is as serviceable as any phone camera I've ever used or tried...when I need a perfect shot, I'll stick with my Nikon D70...for shots on the go, the 9000 camera works great...and there are plenty of others in this thread that agree with me...

I really like using the web on the 9000. I can't make up my mind if I want to try a 940,6700, or return the 9000 and wait for the a900. I want to try and keep my next phone for at least 6 months.

I must also agree about the camera, it is much better than yhe 5600. Even if it wasn't, the 18mb internal memory, added extras, and great reception made it a winner in my book hands down. By the way, does anyone know what could possibly be taking up 3000kb of memory even after I erased all of the demos in the downloads section of the phone. I know pics and videos do, but I don't have any on the phone. In the past, when I erased all the demos that were in the downloads area, there would be 0kb used.

Deval,
What kinds of videos didn't it play? Were they 3gp? I'm really interested in the phone as well.

Updated...again

Just FWIW, my 9000 got its second update in a week's time moving up to v. 1.010 via the auto-update feature. Added a few SprintTV channels (Tonight Show, movie trailers), but browser still gives "out of memory" error on a lot of web browsing.

Coolness

I've now spent some time in some areas with the EV-DO rolled out and it is really cool when it works. Although I haven't tried it (nor do I want to spend the add'l $3/mo), several people have said that the AIM works very well, but iChat/AIM will send SMS msgs to nearly any enabled phone (incl. getting replies), so that won't need to happen. (format new person msg as +12345678900 - IOW, +1areacodenumber) to send. Works really well in iChat, but I'm not real big on the text msg thing unless i'm in a really loud room (concert/whatever) when I can't otherwise hear. :headbang2

Camera

Camera continues to surprise me if you have enough light and are VERY still. I have several shots that really look pretty good now. PictBridge works well, but higher res is a must, of course.

More POWER

I'm going to add another battery, if I can find one, but not an extended as I have to say that the life on this one is surprisingly up to the advertised time thus far. I do have a rapid-charger in my car that seems to work really well with the proprietary connector (not the "universal" that broke so much in my 4500 and 8300).

Sound

I'm not thrilled with the earphone/mic combo, but upgrading the headset was easy enough. The Sony 150UP sounds best on my end and outgoing (I left voicemail for myself with several headsets to hear clarity of the mic, etc.). Found it for 25 bucks on Amazon (did see it for less elsewhere, but most have it for 39 - 49.00).

Making up some ring tones was a snap (thanks to forums here) since the phone supports multiple formats. MP4 suffixes are recognized as video - even when they're not, but they play well.

Comments

Ordered the SanDisk 1Gb miniSD for 60 bucks or so and I'm very pleased with the phone thus far. Feels nice, even for the size, and the "wow factor" from people who see me watching the news or weather when waiting in the airport, etc., is hilarious. Most people just say that "it looks like any other phone, but that is really cool." ;)

After cracking three hinges on previous models, the closed design of this is really solid and feels secure thus far.

Yea, I'm having fun. If only there was REALLY good Mac software with it, I'd be a very happy person.

I had a 5600, loved that phone, only thing i hated about it was a creaky hinge!!! im sure other 5600 owners know what Im talking about. Anyways this whole argument about the camera...come on...its a PHONE. First and foremost it should be a good phone, my 5600 was so if they made any improvements this should be a better PHONE. I heard they fixed the creaky hinge problem too. Anyways I think im gonna wait till someone has a 9000 and hear what they think of it, hopefully a past 5600 owner....
