I just got the phone today but if anyone has any questions feel free to ask away. :)
I like color on the sides of the 9000 but they don't come off. I like the feel of the bottom of the flip better than the 5600. The phone feels solid but kinda top heavy. With each new high end Sanyo model they keep improving on the earpiece sound quality. Speakerphone and AAC ringres sound great and can be very loud. When the flip is closed you can push the camera button on the side of the phone when the key guard is off and and launch the camera, camcorder or voice recorder. There are 4 different vibrate patterns that can be set to pretty much anything. Hopefully someone else that I know gets a 9000 so I can try out the voice sms. The low light pictures are improved but still not the greatest. The QVGA is really nice and I'm impressed with EV-DO speeds. Most of the time it loads the page almost instantly.

I think the 9000 is a little smaller in length compared to the 5600. The 9000 seems to fit better than what my 5600 did in a pouch that I have. I just sold my 5600 the other day so I can't compare them.

Are you saying that this new voice SMS will only work if you are sending it to another phone that has the same capability? I thought the Voice SMS was just using your voice to send an SMS message to another SMS capable phone irregardless if the phone has voice SMS? Please tell me that is not what you are saying?

To me they are about the same size vertical and horizontally speaking. The thickness of the 9000 is a hair thinner than the 5600 tho. And the 5600 battery fits the 9000 perfectly.

Okay, here are my thoughts on the 9000. The graphic menu UI is bland at best the icons are semi-animated and lack color unlike what the 5600 has on its graphic UI. There are 3 background colors titan silver, marine blue, high contrast, no orange like the 5600. EVDO is like crazy fast on the phone. I tried the music store app that is built into the phone which gives you 5 free downloads (when you subscribe of course) to a Mini-SD this works great. The tower (signal) icon list like 10 bars, overkill here I think. Ready link is the same as the 5600 not much difference in performance with both phones. You can force digital roaming (Roaming Only option) on the 9000 and it doesn't have analog. I downloaded Opera Mini onto the 9000 and Jesus H. Christ was it fast in page loads. WOW! The 9000 does have a night/dark mode for night pics it works okay better than the 5600 for sure. The download memory is about 15 meg. The cache or heap memory is 4 meg. There are actual looking folder icons in the SMS section...

Played with the voice SMS on the a840 in our store the other day. I sent it to my 5600 and at first nothing happened. Then THE NEXT DAY, I got my test message as a message to call a california number to listen to it. Maybe it is better from one Voice SMS phone to another...But otherwise it sucks.

Voice SMS is basically a voice recording sent to other phones that have the Voice SMS client also. If a voice SMS is sent to a non Voice SMS phone then a prompt gives you an 800 number to call to hear the recording.

I'm not sure what you mean but if it's just the signal meter bars I haven't seen anymore than 5 at one time on mine. It's usally flucuates to 1 to 3 on mine. I have a good signal where I live. Do you hear any noise when you open shut you phone? I hear a noise when I wiggle the flip. :irked: It's not a big deal just wish Sanyo would do a better job with there flips.

In other words the signal strength indicator spreads half way across the screen like 10 bars wide to the EVDO indicator. No hinge issues that I have noticed. Mine is solid and no creaking whatsoever.

Btw, I had to do an AAP to my account to activate the 9000 cuz there was no way to activate an EVDO phone on a grandfathered vision code. When the store rep tried to ESN swap my primary line to the 9000 RMS errored out. Come to find out my codes on my account wouldn't allow the 9000 to activate, cuz of the EVDO part of the phone. So, I will be returning the 9000 within the 14 day period. I ain't changing my plan. Also there WILL NOT be any grandfathered EVDO on older vision plans. So says Sprint.

A1: The color of the phone is like a silver gray with kinda like a soft black on the front sides. A:2 Keys lite up blue but seem dimmer than the 5600's keypad. IMO. A3: Same as the 5600 in the loudness dept. Other details are it has the newest T9 software and it can be customized thru the menu interface.

I think the 9000 will be a great phone. It probally will be the best phone for surfing the web for some time depending on how the Samsung 900 does. I played with the 940 yesterday and the design is way cool. I'm going back to the Sprint store today to play with the 940. I really don't want to give up a QVGA for a cool design but I might just for something different since I had a 5600.

Maybe that's why the sales rep took about an hour to do my transaction still couldn't get it to work, so i just left. I still want the phone.
Did either one of you have trouble with ev-do. The sales guy told me i had to get power vision and leave it on my account or the phone would be locked if i cancel my vision and cs would not allow me to cancel vision either. Odd?

I say keep the phone. I played with both in the store and didn't like the a940 too much. I just hate it that you have to turn the screen around everytime you use the camera. Kind of annoying sometimes if you ask me. Also, if you can live without bluetooth, this phone is worth getting over the a940. How is the speaker? It sounded to me that the a940 was louder.

I called my phone 5-10 while the EV-DO symbol was active and no calls came through. 3 or 4 calls went through when the page wasn't loading but some didn't. I did receive a voicemail pretty quick I think when the page wasn't loading. I'm not sure why I didn't get the calls when EV-DO was active. Maybe EV-DO is not completely ready?

Half duplex. And not sure about DUN, never tried it being I have a Sprint EVDO Data Card. It is suppose to have it and you have to get the $25 for 40 meg option to use the 9000 as a modem that much a store rep told me.

EVDO is like vision and will forward the call when the data icon is in use. It is EVDO Rev A that would allow voice calls thru when data is active.

Yes, I though Voice SMS only works to other Voice SMS phones & to my knowledge there may be like only one or two other models. Again, to my understanding, it gets transmitted over the network to the other parties phone and stored in its memory. It almost seems sorta like voicemail but without the need to dial into voicemail to send it or call the party and they do not have to dial anything to retrieve it. Of course, I could be wrong so correct me if I am. lol

"EVDO is like vision and will forward the call when the data icon is in use."
Whoa hold up, we had this massive thread months ago about whether or not when EV-DO is in use, calls would go through. IIRC, the consensus was that YES, the advantage to EV-DO was that calls would come THROUGH even when you had a data session going, but that you would NOT be able to use both VOICE and DATA simultaneously...

Does the 9000 have drivers mode that allows the phone to speak to you or voice activated calling. I know the LG's have this function. This feature will either make or break my descion to purchase the phone.
Does this 9000 support the Flash GUI, like the a900 does?

The 9000 does not support flash GUI, neither does the 940. I was always under the assumption that a call would NOT interrupt a data connection so this is no surprise to me.

My question is easy.
The same flat or barrel charger is the same as the other Sanyo phones? I ordered my 9000 last night and I got extra car and home chargers.
Also you mentioned having to change Vision plans due to EVDO. What's the minimum monthly charge for EVDO? I pay $5 a month for Vision right now.

The 9000 comes with a travel charger which isan't the pin hole one connecter. I guess the pin hole connecter causes more problems. I like the pin hole one better because it's easier to use but I didn't know that it can cause a problem after some time. I'll still use the pin hole connecter in the care.

Just an FYI: I just returned my 9000 today. Nice phone for those folks that don't mind losing any grandfathered goodies. I, for one would love to get it again if and when Sprint changes there pricing policy in regards to EVDO add ons to existing plans that have vision core codes like my $85 plan has. I bought a 1G mini card on Amazon for cheap. Now I'm looking for the 9000 extended battery. The Sanyo website has them for $59.99 which is the only place I've seen on the web. Does the 5600 share the same battery as the 9000? Sprint doesn't have them either.

TBake, if I could trouble you for one more thing (since you are ALREADY "the man"), could you tell me how much battery life you use by watching Sprint TV? Could you watch it for hours at a time without blowing out the battery? If you had to guess (or if you could even test it!), how long would you say you can watch Sprint TV starting with a full battery before it's completely out of juice?
As always, ANY insight you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

From my experience with different manufactures sanyo batteries hold there charge better than any other manufacture. I've been playing with the 9000 all the time and the regular battery seems to be fine for me. On a full charge I think you could whatch sprint tv for a few hours a day but I'm not sure. You can always get a exstended battery and I think it will give a hour or two more battery life but will add size to the back of the phone.

Until then my 5600 will do.
You didn't want to just use the 9000 with regular vision?

The 9000 only defaults to vision if EVDO isn't present and my plan's core vision code would have to be change, meaning I would have to change to a whole new plan just to use the 9000. The vision code known as a CSL on my account prevents the 9000 from activating onto my primary line. Until Sprint changes the EVDO codes. I am not willing to change my $85 plan. People that have add on vision codes could change to a EVDO plan and phone without much problem and they would LOSE any grandfathered goodies AS WELL. Plus I need analog support being there is no digital services up in Colorado's high country. The EVDO phones being released have no analog abilities. So, my Sierra A580 aircard will surfice as my EVDO experience and my primary IP connection.

Got another question.
I bought a 1G mini card on Amazon for cheap. Now I'm looking for the 9000 extended battery. The Sanyo website has them for $59.99 which is the only place I've seen on the web. Does the 5600 share the same battery as the 9000? Sprint doesn't have them either.
The 5600 battery fits the 9000 perfectly and IMO looks great on the 9000.

Ok I'm more confused now.. I just asked the question a few posts above if I could use the 9000 with just regular vision and shut ev-do off. I thought Ronkh said I could. I'm want to keep ev-do but I don't think it's worth it unless sprint takes care of the grandfathered users.

You can shut off EVDO on the phone itself, but that would defeat the purpose of having an EVDO phone? You would still have to have an EVDO option on an account tho, even if EVDO was turned off on the phone. Sprint has their system set up this way with the 9000.

Last night I saw the old web symbol on my 9000 when I was using the web and it seemed faster than the 5600. Just want to get this straight. I can't use my grandfathered vision on the 9000 if I shut the ev-do option off and just pay $10. I just like the 9000 but don't want to give up my grandfathered plan and pay more. I'm not sure if I'm going to keep my 9000 but sooner or later if we want a new high end phone were going to have to get a ev-do phone right?

The EVDO option would include EVDO usage and vision usage, if EVDO wasn't present. The regular vision code itself is useless with EVDO headsets cuz EVDO is a separate service then what vision is. Got it now?

Not a bad idea there. But, at .002 cents a kb I can see my phone bill now.. Being that EVDO pumps kbs like crazy my bill could range from an extra $80 to $100 a month with that code. No thanks. Thanks for the insight tho. :)

I know I already put this post in a QVGA thread in the general section but just want evryone to see it.
I use the web a lot on my phone and I really liked using the web on the 5600 and the 9000. I want to try the 940 for the cool design but I don't think I want to give up my QVGA. I think the web font size on the 940 is to big. The pictures below show the difference between the displays on the 940 and the 9000. You can see at least a few more lines of text per page on the 9000 and this allows you to surf faster. Pictures were taken at the Sprint store with my 9000 macro mode on. The quality is not that good but shows the point.

I posted this on another thread, but I found out yesterday by asking the question, at the end of my month of free power vision, will I still get power vision or will I go back to my basic vision service? The response was that I didn't need to add power vision but if I were in an EVDO market then I would be charged per KB for power vision. After checking out the different plans I chose the 20 dollar pv plan it comes with a lot of extra things the only item I will be paying extra for is text messages which came down to 5.00. So I will be paying 5.00 more than I was paying before. I changed my plan to one of the new free and flexible plans that also now includes roaming so I saved 5.00 there. Not bad and I think this will be a keeper for me.

I guess nobody is 100% sure on what is going on with EV-DO right now...I can tell you this so far...my plan looks the same online...I also called a business rep this morning to verify my plan, and she read back the same old grandfathered RL/Vision/Pics plan with unlimited SMS that I had before on all of my lines...there were no changes made to my plan over the past few months, even when I switched to the 9000 last week...in addition, she did not see any casual use EV-DO or any other EV-DO codes on my line, nor did she see any accumulating data charges...I should also throw out there that I do not have access to any of the premium streaming content that is available on even the most basic new EV-DO plan...as of now, I am crossing my fingers I can somehow get grandfathered to EV-DO the same as how I was grandfathered to Vision when that first came out...
in addition, I bought the 9000 from Telesales with no strings attached...I was not told that I was getting free EV-DO for a month, and did not ask for it...nor was I told I would be forced into doing anything one month after activating the new phone and using EV-DO...I will not change my plan, so if Spring wants to force my hand, they can either deactivate EVDO on the phone, or they can buy it back from me since I will already be past the 14 day return window by the time any problems would arise...
lastly, since we can all agree that nobody is 100% sure how this will play out, I have a note in my Palm to call Sprint every Fri to make sure that my plan has not changed, no codes have been added or deleted, and that I am not being charged for data usage of any kind (EVDO or vision)...I will be making that call for the next two months...at that point, if all is the same as it is today, I think I'll be able to safely assume the best...if not, at least I won't have to fight them over a full month's worth of inaccurate data charges...
and remember, Ms Randall, who was also a Sprint rep, checked her own plan and did not see any new codes for EV-DO usage, and she is in the same boat as me... :fingers:

in the pos system we use, that would be impossible. however, in p2k, you may be able to get around it. since everything is so new and most everyone still doesn't know what needs to be provisioned for correct operation/billing, you may have lucked out.

The end of life documentation our store has received :deal: put the a940 and 9000 at a predicted end of life date of December/January. (Think about how short a time the 5600 was available) This end of life date is when Sanyo stops making it and shortly after when we can no longer order it, usually with Sprint stores still selling it until stock runs out. This changes if demand is high, but even with everyone one this page who is interested, high end phones are not where the money is. Sanyo (I guarantee) is making more money off of the 200 and 2300 than they ever would on the 9000.
Sanyo might have another EV-DO phone along those lines by then though (besides the 7500 :snore: , and perhaps with Bluetooth), The 9000 seems like a quick fix with Sprint demanding an EV-Do phone for launch and Sanyo just retooling the 5600.
Long and Short of it: You might be fine with that date, you might just have to have them ship one from another store (ask, if you are an upgrade they probably won't offer to do that) or they might have a different Sanyo EV-DO with a memory port (5700? :fingers: )

talk is just that, talk...if you read other threads, there are MANY people that just did an ESN swap without changing there plans at all, and now have functioning EVDO...I have the old $85 plan with free vision/RL/pics/SMS on all of my lines, and did not change a thing when I switched to the 9000...I don't get the premium content channels included in the pay packages, but I do get EVDO internet speeds where available...
it all depends on your situation...if you buy the phone in a store or try to use a rebate, there is a very good change they'd ask you to change plans...if you pay full price through Telesales and just ask for a basic ESN swap (and be sure the rep is knowledgeable) you will hopefully be OK...

I usally don't talk that much on my phone but I take pictures and use ev-do a lot. I might have one or 2 battery blocks left before I go to bed. I think Sanyo batteries hold there charge a little better than other manufactures. Not sure how big the exstended battery is but I think it adds another couple of hours talk time.

it all depends on your situation...if you buy the phone in a store or try to use a rebate, there is a very good change they'd ask you to change plans...if you pay full price through Telesales and just ask for a basic ESN swap (and be sure the rep is knowledgeable) you will hopefully be OK...
Mmmm, yep, that would be one of my problems; I'm elegible for a $150 instant rebate and I wanted to use it....

see if you can apply it with telesales...not sure...I think us guinea pigs took a risk adopting this phone early and not really knowing how grandfathering would be handled...I think those who wait till the official EVDO launch might see loopholes closed and have a harder time getting what earlier adopters got...this is of course assuming the early adopters were in fact grandfathered properly and do not see charges in month two...so far so good on my end though...and there are others on the forum noting similar results...

This is what is holding me back from getting either of those phones. I do not want to lose my 100 txt msgs, Picture and video mail. I pay $10 for Vision. I just bought the Samsung A880 on Tuesdsay 11/8/05 because I was afraid to get one of the EV-DO phones. I would exchange it for a Sanyo 9000 (within my 14 day period) if I knew for a fact I wouldn't lose my current vision plan. I like it the way it is. I called a Sprint rep today and that Rep told me yes I would have to sign up for a EV-DO plan if I wanted to upgrade to one of those phones. I really don't know what to do.
I lost my unlimited sms text messaging when we renewed our 2 year contract by adding a 3rd line. I called back because I saw they were charging me 15 bucks a month for unlimited. I called and told the rep that I was grandfathered in, and she was like "Well, you apparently lost it. You want me to take this off?" So now I'm stuck at 100 messages. That sucks, because I happen to text a lot. Or should I say I USED to text a lot. :( I've tried several times to get it back, it's a no go. And I don't have a new EVDO phone yet.

Thanks for your initial report. I'm thinking of getting this over the Samsung A940.

you were given incorrect info by that rep...if you pay full price for your phones, you do NOT have to change anything whatsoever on your plan...I have all add-ons free on my old plan and they remained that way...I use the 9000 with EVDO and still have my old vision plan, unlimited texts, pics, etc...I have been using all of them...no changes and no charges...every week I check my plan online and it was never touched...I also call Sprint to ask about data charges and there is nothing...I am still in my first billing period, but am not on an EVDO trial and do not have EVDO coded onto my account, yet I have been using it for 3 weeks...

I tried the 940 for a few days but I miss the QVGA display to much and went back to a 9000. I might try a 6700. I was impressed with the design and the build quality of the 940 but I was disappointed in the camera and battery life. Also I didn't think the camera placement wouldn bother me but it did. If the 940 had a camera as good as the 800 and a QVGA I probally would have kept it. Don't get me wrong I think it will be a good phone just not for me.

I took my new Sanyo 9000 on a road trip today, and was very disappointed to find that this phone handles signal transitions (between 1xRTT and EV-DO) very poorly. In the extensive areas of transition between EV-DO and mere 1xRTT, I got various Proxy Authorization Required messages, network failures, etc. I often had to restart various applications multiple times in order to revive the phone's data services.
Shall we pray that Sanyo/Sprint fixes such a major bug in this reportedly lame-duck model?

I have been in and out of EVDO coverage without ANY of the problems you reported...I am on a high floor in a concrete building at work and actually go in and out of EVDO coverage sitting at my desk...no problems at all...I stream Sirius while this is happening with no loss of signal...I have never (in the 3 weeks I've had the phone) even seen a proxy auth error or network failure...I'm wondering if there were tower issues where you were traveling, because in my experience, this is not a handset issue related to the 9000...

I want whatever you are smoking...the 7400 is not even in the same league...not a lot to argue...voice quality on the 9000 is BETTER than the 7400, and unlike you I've used both phones...let's see, 18MB internal memory vs 2-3mb, better camera and shot options on 9000, memory card slot, EVDO...not to mention the QVGA screen...as for the 9000 being too light weight, that is a first
In any case, enjoy your 7400...you'll never know what you are missing...

So after seeing everybody's 5600's I was throughly excited when I heard an exact duplicate with EVDO called the 9000 was coming. However when I got my phone today, I was a tad disappointed at how much I paid for it.
Frustrations:
^^^^^^^^^
Inside Flip Speaker -- The people sound kind of muddy? I have only talked to 4 or 5 different people, some sounded fine... we'll see what the free weekend minutes bring.
MP3 Ringtones: What the hell? They totally disabled the ability to set MP3 files on your miniSD card as ringtones - why did I want this phone again, I ask myself.
Music Store: They make you buy everything through their gay Music Store -- and I still don't know if you can set your purchased tones as your ringer.
Phone-As-Modem: Okay you can read everything totally awesome about it later below, but one thing i was a little peeved about was the fact that Sanyo gives you the "Bar Style" home charger, and then their USB cable is a "Bar Style" too.... and GUESSS WHAAAT -- it doesn't provide a charge to the phone?! What the heck... so I guess don't plan to be on the internet for very long phones... oh yes, and if you were smart enough to go: "Oh, I could just go to RadioShack and get a pin style charger." TOO BAD, they made the USB cable so damn big only the metal pin could fit in... any plastic casings around the pin charger just wouldn't fit... SMART Sanyo :irked: ..not
DURRR!?>!? -- As they are becoming more like user friendly, they are making the phones more stupidly easy... If i wanted that I could buy a Samsung. Seriously, they left out instructions on EVERY SINGLE ONE of the phones cool tweaking features. There's this mysterious "PC Sync" that isn't even in the unhelpful Sprint Manual?! Sadly, I'm seeting that Sprint is becoming more and more like Verizon - Shunning away 3rd party media and making everything propriatery and dammed expensive!
Things that are KICK ASS about this phone:
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
EVDO - WOW FAST POWER VISION... the browser is super fast.
Phone-As-Modem: Sprint gives you the software to gain access to the internet, AND they include the USB cable for you (a Sprint first?). I know many people griped about the MM-8300 and the fact that you coudln't use it as a modem. The speeds are PHENOMINAL: Using the online free speed tester set rate it against "Cable Connections" my phone downloaded their 1meg file in 3.4 seconds at a rated 2.5 megabits per second...my managers phone, the VM4500, rates at 700ish kilobits per second.
Using the internet I went to download.com and I was downloading from their server at a steady 136 kilobytes per second! FAST!
Speakerphone: Once again, Sanyo's legendary speakerphone prevails - playing my MP3's from my miniSD card it sounds absolutely crystal clear and amazing.
QVGA = Kick ass resolution! The screen is just amazing crystal clear!
Overall Take
^^^^^^^^
I'd have to give this phone a 7/10... although I'm sure some would think an 8 or 9.. I really bought this phone so I could have my MP3's as ringtones... who knows maybe once i figure out this mysterious PC Sync crap. It's dissapointing to see that Sanyo and Sprint are going easy, dumb, and proprietary. But otherwise a Feature rich phone compared to the rest of 'em. Make it a $169.99 phone and call it fair.

Hey guys just for you su people who are wondering about the mp3 function on the 9000 it is awesome. when im at work or working out i turn my phone into power save and on a full nights charge the phone never dropped one power bar for 6 strait hours. it probably would have lasted even longer but i was done and turned my power save mode off and made calls. also suprisingly enough when your listening to your own saved songs you can still recieve calls so you wont miss anything. also the 16 mb card provided with this baby is enough to hold 11 to 15 songs from the sprint store. the one thing i dont like about this phone is you have to log the sprint music store to listen to your songs you have downloaded. but with the phone flipped down and stereo earbuds in you can still control your tunes. the big silver r/l button skips to the next song in your order and the arrow buttons control volume. also the songs just keep looping until you stop it. but the earbuds sound great and i love the crisp sounding speaker

You do realize that you can simply copy your own MP3 or AAC (MP4) songs (e.g., ripped from CDs that you own) from your computer directly to the memory card, and then play them on the Media Player? In fact, you can also copy MPEG-4 video (no larger than 176x144 pixels) to the card, and then play it on the Media Player.
And needless to say, much larger miniSD cards are available at reasonable prices on the Internet.
What do you mean by Power Save mode? Do you mean Airplane mode, which turns off all radio transmission?

1) Why do you need to buy from the Sprint Music Store, beyond the 5 free songs? You can load MP3 or MP4/AAC songs directly onto the memory card, and you can download MP4/AAC ringers (that you create yourself from ripped CDs that you own).
2) I use a USB cable that does provide some charging simultaneously with data. I understand, though, that it is not entirely safe to use such a cable as a regular charger--it merely gives the phone a boost during data transfers, which presumably are battery-intensive.
3) Many Sanyo phones have had a "PC Sync" option. As far as I know, it has never actually done anything. It looks like it was meant for some proprietary Sanyo software that was never written.
4) Sprint does not shun 3rd-party media, it embraces it. The Sanyo 9000 can play 3rd-party songs and videos, download 3rd-party ringers and screensavers (and even applications like Google Mobile and Opera Mini), and even stream 3rd-party video and audio. Have you tried

1) Your computer need not have an SD slot. You can transfer files through the USB cable provided with the phone, or you can use an SD card reader/writer.
2) Yes, turning off all the lights is a kind of power save. Putting the phone into airplane mode would save some more, but of course would prevent you from getting any calls or text messages!
Do you really need to turn off the lights? Can't you simply close the phone and let it play songs while closed? Aren't all the lights off in that case?
3) At a store, a 1GB miniSD card may be expensive. Besides the Internet, the least expensive miniSD card might be at a TigerDirect outlet store, if one is in your area.
4) On Windows 98, you probably need the USB mass storage driver, a driver that lets you connect a mass storage device (like a memory card reader) to the computer as if it were a disk drive. Windows XP should not need such a driver, but keep in mind that whenever you connect your phone to the computer, the phone presents you with a choice as to whether you want PictBridge, mass storage, or modem. You have to make that choice before the computer will actually recognize your phone properly.
If your WinXP computer still doesn't recognize the phone, you must have some other problem. Have you tried connecting directly to a USB jack on the computer, rather than on a hub? Do other USB devices work properly on the WinXP computer?
5) You can use the phone as a modem for any computer, laptop or desktop. However, you will need a driver (downloadable from Sprint as the PCS Connection Manager). I must also warn you that ordinary Vision or Power Vision does not cover use of the phone as a modem. (There is a separate add-on to your service plan for that.) It is unclear exactly what Sprint is going to do about people who go ahead and do so anyway. If you try this at all, I suggest you do so only rarely, for small amounts of data transfer (e.g., light browsing or checking email for a few minutes).

Do you realize that the browser built into the phone is not a full-blown Web browser? It's sufficient for Sprint's purposes but rather limited. If you want a full-HTML Web browser, download Opera Mini into your phone. For instructions on downloading Opera Mini, read the last couple of pages of this thread:
http://www.sprintusers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=72613
Basically, you download the program's .jar file, then use the Java Midlet tool on this page
http://rumkin.com/tools/sprint/
to send a hyperlink (to the .jar file) to your phone. You then use your phone's text messager and Web browser to download and install the program, which becomes one of your Applications.

That sounds like your PC is detecting the phone as a phone/modem instead of as a mass storage device. You do have a Sanyo MM-9000, right? And the computer is running WinXP, right? (Remember, I said that Win98 would need a specific mass storage driver in order to transfer files with the phone.)
When connecting your phone to the PC, keep the phone open. As soon as you connect everything together, your phone should bring up a menu entitled USB Connection. It should offer three choices:
1) PictBridge
2) Mass Storage
3) Modem/Standby
You need to choose Mass Storage if you want to transfer files between PC and phone.
The only other glitch I can imagine is in the Tools menu. Select USB Connection, and then set Mass Storage to Yes.

okay, a coupla stupid questions:
1. I bought the 9000 recently and still have over 200 contacts on my 7400. how do i save the contacts from the 7400 on my pc and then transfer to the 9000? is there a way to save ringers that are currently on my 7400 and transfer them to the 9000?
2. besides going to a sprint store, how do i get firmware updates for my phone?
3. on the 7400, when i entered the last 4 digits of a contacts number, it would automatically dial, but on the 9000, it 'asks' for the name of the person rather than autodial. is there anyway to do this on the 9000 like the 7400?

4. voice command on the 7400...is this NOT available on the 9000?
1) Download the latest official version of Bitpim and Sprint's Sanyo USB driver. Bitpim explicitly supports the 7400, and you can tell Bitpim that the 9000 is an 8300. This works at least for the address book; I don't know whether it will work for ringers. When writing the address book to some phones, the phone will actually display a frightening message like "Service required"; but then the phone power-cycles itself and everything is fine, including the new address book.
I've only tried Bitpim once. I'm sure others here are experts and can give you more help.
2) The Tools menu has an Update Phone selection. It often fails--you have to keep trying, perhaps late at night or early in the morning when it isn't so busy? To get a PRL update, you have to ask Customer Service to flag your phone for one.
4) Press the upper button on the righthand edge of the phone, and say something like
Contact...John Smith...Home
and the phone will call the home phone number of John Smith from your address book.

in regards to the update, i've tried the update option in the tools menu and it says that there are no updates available. the software version is still 1.007sp on the phone and the prl is still 20216.

1) The Sanyo driver is bundled with PCS Connection Manager, downloadable from here:
http://www4.sprint.com/pcsbusiness/support/downloads/index.jsp
Choose Windows XP, and then download version 3.01.007 for USB Cables.
2) Bitpim should be able to find the port automatically, I think.
3) You may have to try Update Phone late at night or early in the morning, or who knows when. It took me many tries to get it. :( But it still beats visiting a store and leaving the phone for an hour.
The latest version for the Sanyo MM-9000 is 1.012SP.

i do major web surfing on my phone so i was just wondering if any one else had trouble with websites and pictures. i get sometimes a restart browser too much... you know but coming from the 7400 on the same pictures i didnt have to worry. is it the browser cache. my phone even did it loading tbakers phone images here on the su forum. I have that same problem on my 9000 when using regular vision. Sometimes like only half the page loads, and then I have to go back and click the link again. When using EVDO I hadn't seen that happen.

1) I was just making a point that proprietary music stores that won't even let you listen to your "Purchased" without your vision connection -- however I have not tried "downloading" my music onto my computer, then somehow making it an mp3 on my 1GB miniSD card
Luckily I figured out that Focus uploader on the Sprint Users website.. so I can upload my ringers onto my phone... silly that they can't be on my miniSD Card though...
2) Where did you get this usb cable that provides power? I'd like to have one..... :-D
3) That's quite amusing that they haven't written the software for it yet. Just as smart as their production plans for the 9000..... :-P

has anyone else had trouble with the load time while trying to access their online album on the 9000. i noticed that it took longer than on my 7400. i tested it on against my g /f 8300 and hers loaded faster. i was even on ev do. every time i try to access it (always on ev do) it seems like it takes twice or three times as longer as my 7400. any help would be appriciated.

Does this phone let you play MP3's or watch videos when it isn't getting a signal? I have heard of some of these mp3 phones that actually block this when there is no signal, and I want to make sure that this one isn't one of them before my 14 days is up.

Hi guys... I just picked up my Sanyo MM-9000 from Radio Shack the other day (all the sprint stores couldn't keep'em in stock) and I have one initial question that I'm hoping you studs can help me with... WHERE can I get the EXTENDED BATTERY for the MM-9000??? I've searched and found many references to a 1650 mAh battery, but can't find it anywhere to buy. Also, a desktop charger for the spare battery would be cool too. Anyone... Anyone..??

1) If you put the 9000 into Airplane Mode, which turns off all radio transmission and reception, you will see that the 9000 is still able to play songs and videos from the miniSD card, including those previously downloaded from the Sprint Music Store.
2) Multiple posters assert that extended batteries for the 5600 will fit and work properly on the 9000, though they may have a different color (black instead of silver?).

Anybody know if it is possible to get this phone to play videos in a full screen through the media player? If not, does the possibility exist that some third party programs later on down the line could accomplish this? Or does the phone limit the ability of third party programs to access the video/audio hardware directly?

In other words the signal strength indicator spreads half way across the screen like 10 bars wide to the EVDO indicator. No hinge issues that I have noticed. Mine is solid and no creaking whatsoever.

(EV-DO)
Part of a family of CDMA2000 1x digital wireless standards. 1xEV-DO is a "3G" CDMA standard. EV-DO stands for "EVolution, Data-Only".
EV-DO provides data rates over 10 times faster than 1xRTT, the previous data technology for CDMA networks.

They have some kind of special plan that can only be setup for a limited time which somehow or another actually *reduced* my monthly rates by $15 a month by *adding* an additional fifth line. And also, when I activated that fifth line, I was able to get the $150 discount as well. You might try the same thing if you are in a similar boat; I just called telesales and they informed me about that deal, I didn't see it advertised anywhere, and I am not sure if it has any specific name.

Yes, the connector and cable is the same. No, the 9000 driver has to handle EV-DO and is hence very different.

Yeah there are a lot of "features" that I would actually like to remove on this phone actually. Namely, the "music" icon for the sprint music store. Who needs that when you have a minisd card?
Then there is the on demand stuff. Who needs that when you have opera mini? Just use the bookmarks and you get even more information, with quicker access, for free.
Then in the my content stuff, it would be less cluttersome to remove the "get new" and "my content manager" links. Not only am I not interested in what they have to offer, but you have to pay by the month for it (hah!) and you can't even preview it first. It's so much better to just download your own pics from your favorite sites on the net, upload them to the minisd, and then copy over.
And don't get me started on the IM and email apps. There are so many other ways to do that for free from the phone, or better yet with gmail-mobile. Nevermind that gmail provides you a nice free 2gb *anywhere* storage to boot.
Not that I am complaining though, this is a great phone. Just it seems to me that there must be a lot of suckers out there to actually merit them cluttering up the UI on your behalf.
So would you recommend this phone to others?

I also noticed the 9000 doesn't have front player buttons like the samsung blade, so can you use the mp3 player when the flip is closed? Can you ff/rew, adjust vol, etc? If the mp3 player is too basic, I may never use it.

Since you have both these phones, could you give me your take on the ease of navigating thru the menu's to get every where on these phones? I was always partial to Sanyo's way, everything just seems more 'intuitive' and user freindly. Some of the 900 threads seem to suggest the 900 is almost a horror to do the simplest tasks, having to learn things from scratch, and not really being 'user freindly' at all. Also, if you were forced to spend 5 straight hours surfing the web, which of these phones would you choose to do it on? Same with all the MM stuff. Thanks

What a phone! Bravo/Sanyo! Small, comfortable, light weight, high-quality! Crisp, clear, large, display 240 x 320. Sound quality is excellent, menu navigation is easy and intuitive, and the camera/camcorder quality is above what you might expect.
I have already downloaded pictures, MP3s and movies into the phone with no problem but, I am having a hard time finding out how to import my phone numbers and ringers.
The future dial software worked fine for the new MM-8300 (after the update for the new phone model) but future dial does not support the new MM-9000 yet. "But one might think you wouldn't need third-party software to add and edit phone numbers and ringers to an advanced phone like this".
Does anyone have any ideas?

the 9000 is not yet supported by most software...take both phones to a sprint store and they should be able to transfer the data for free or a small fee...as for the ringtones, try using the focus uploader or gtoal.com/pcs...you basically end up using vision instead of a cable to accomplish the same task...

With patience, I was able to convince Futuredial SnapSync to load my Outlook contacts into my Sanyo MM-9000 phone. I had to repeatedly tell SnapSync which COM port to use (the Sanyo serial port, COM16 on my computer), and which phone model to assume (I told it I had an MM-7400). Even then, I ran across a significant problem:
Every contact that SnapSync loaded into the phone was given a null ringer!
The MM-9000 has the ability to ring distinctively for a given contact. After SnapSync had loaded all my contacts, I discovered that none of them would ring the phone at all, because each had been given a null ringer. I had to go through every contact in the phone and reselect the normal ringer.

I've read almost every post in this thread and didn't find an answer to my question about the 9000, but it was asked in here but also no answer. Since the phone is so new in my area no local stores cary 9000 accesories yet, and I can't wait for one to be shipped from online. :fingers:

My question is this, would a car charger for an 8100(my previous phone) work on my 9000?
Yes, and in fact either kind would work. As you know, most recent Sprint phones can accept charge both through the multi-pin data port, and through a standardized charging jack. The data port on the 9000 matches that of the 8100 and even the 5300. So, whether your old car charger plugs into the data port or into the standardized charging jack, it should work properly with your 9000.
Indeed, a USB data cable for the 5300 or 8100 works properly with the 9000 (for tethering to a laptop computer).

Lithium ion batteries have their own built-in protection. It is difficult for me to understand why a charging USB cable is any more dangerous than a typical "travel charger," which appears to have no protective circuitry either and which charges the battery through the data port also.
Nevertheless, since handset manufacturers do not expect their customers to charge via USB and therefore probably do not test that configuration, I do not recommend that anyone use USB as a primary charging mechanism. Rather, I think the charging capability of a USB cable should be used only to power the phone while actively transferring data--e.g., to avoid running down the phone's battery while using it as a modem--and not while the phone is idle.
This is merely my own opinion and practice, of course.

I was thinking about getting this phone and would like to know more about it. I just got the MM-8300 a month ago. But I have a few days to think about changing phone. Could you let me now what is the advantage of having this cellphone. What kinds of features does the MM-9000 has that the MM-8300 does not have. Yeah, the primary reason I want this cable is because it is a retractable zip cable and it supports data. The charging feature is just an added bonus. The main concern of mine I guess is how reliable this cable is for data transfer.
The included USB cable is just not something I want to carry around in my pocket, but a zip cable is a whole different story.

The MM-9000 is a full generation, or perhaps two, beyond the MM-8300. But before I briefly explain why, I must point out that the MM-8300 is considered much more stylish (if that is important to you). The MM-8300 is smaller, lighter, sleeker, and--perhaps most important of all for fashionable women--accepts trim/accent plates in over a dozen colors, so that a woman's cell phone can match her outfit. Why do I know this? Because I am giving my niece an MM-8300 for Christmas. Her parents think she will like it all too much. (Reportedly, my niece often runs late due to excessive accessorizing.)
The MM-8300 also has the advantage of analog roaming capability (which the MM-9000 does not have), very useful for those trips into rural Kentucky and the deserts of Nevada.
But we now come to the MM-9000. It is truly a gadgeteer's dream. Its primary advantages over the MM-8300 are:
1) EV-DO speed in transferring data. Somewhat noticeable when surfing the Internet or watching streaming video.
2) Ability to act as a high-speed modem for a laptop computer. But if you do this more than rarely, expect Sprint to demand that you switch to a special service plan that includes this.
3) 240x320 screen, instead of the 176x220 on the MM-8300. Text can be clearer and smaller, so you can read more of a Web page without scrolling.
4) Slot for a miniSD flash memory card. A 1GB card (costing about $65) can hold 5 full-length movies (at 176x144 resolution) plus many songs and photos. The MM-9000 can connect to your desktop or laptop computer and access the card for you as a drive letter.
5) With some effort, the MM-9000 supports a GPS locating program that costs as little as $1.49/mo. On the MM-8300, the least expensive GPS program costs $9.99/mo.

The Sanyo MM-9000 have conference ability on it?
All cell phones support 3-way calling and call waiting, if that's what you mean.
If you mean a multi-party walkie-talkie capability, then yes, the MM-9000 does support ReadyLink, if you are willing to pay the $$ to subscribe to it. But ReadyLink does not interwork with Nextel's such capability.

My old 5600 made a creaking noise also, when the flip was open and you talked on it. Annoying. I used graphite power to correct it.

So heres my question. Got my father a headset for his 9000, but it doesn't have an answer/end button on it so can he use any of the buttons on the outside of the phone to answer and end a call without having to flip open the phone?
Can't find the box the phone came in, otherwise I'd take a look in the manual.

The LED light on mm-9000 is six-colored and its just used to notify you of a call. And its also the phones flash.

You seem to be describing an unusual combination of call waiting and 3-way calling.
Ordinarily, 3-way calling means that while you are in a call, you can initiate another call and then conference the 2 other parties together with yourself. Call waiting means that while you are in a call, if another call comes in, you are beeped and can switch between the 2 other parties. I have never heard of the ability to conference all 3 parties together in this second situation (in which you are beeped). I think it would require new programming in the mobile switching office.
Keep in mind that most cell phones do not actually have two lines (phone numbers), only one. That's why the handling of 3-way calling and call waiting requires support from the switching office.

I have to admit the 9000 is a pretty darn good phone. Everything worked right away phone vision pic mail no waiting no nonsense. I like that. I just wish sanyo pics would come out landscape like samsung. I really enjoy that on all my samsung phones. It looks like a real picture not a cell phone picture, you know what I mean. Oh well this phone will last now until the 5700 comes out. I have heard that phone is going to pretty nice. It is currently being tested so we will soon see what it's all about.

Do you, or anybody know what the form factor will be with the 5700? I'm hoping it will be a flip, but then there's also rumors of a Sanyo slider.

The 9000 can play standard mp3's and aac's (which can be encoded by itunes from your cd's) it will not play any DRM music files or WMA's. The amount that it can hold depends on the size of memory card you have (can handle up to a 1 gb minisd) A 16mb minisd comes packed in with the phone but it is not near enough for mp3 use, but is sufficient for the phone's 1.3 megapixel camera(most pictures taken at high quality are under 100kb)
Other than the phone not having built in BlueTooth, I have not found any negatives to this phone, it is the complete package, it does it all.

Flip open the phone, connect it to your computer via the included USB cable. A menu will appear on the phone; choose Mass Storage. The computer will then recognize the phone's miniSD card as a drive letter. Copy .mp3 (or, better, .m4a) songs to the card's Media folder.
The above assumes that you have already installed the miniSD card in the phone. You can also write files directly to the card via an SD card reader.

There's a few threads that already have what you're looking for. Try a search in the search box for '9000 pictures'
