Sprint Phones Get Sirius
By Susan Rush
June 14, 2005
It looks like Howard Stern isn't the only one to be bitten by the satellite radio bug. Sprint inked a deal to bring select Sirius music channels to its PCS Vision customers.
Sprint and Sirius did not release too many specifics about the service, but did reveal they are evaluating a mix of new hits, classic rock, hip-hop, country, blues, soul, jazz and Broadway's best music.
When the service is launched, it will be available to Sprint PCS Vision customers nationwide. It is not yet clear which handset models will support the service. Sirius says pricing information for the mobile service will be released later this year.
Terms of the agreement between the two companies were not disclosed.
"One of our goals is to make this unique content available to as many Sprint PCS Vision customers as we can, over as many multimedia devices as possible," says Scott Greenstein, Sirius president of entertainment and sports.
Sirius' channel lineup consists of 120 channels spanning music, news, sports, talk and entertainment. The deal with Sprint is part of the satellite radio provider's strategy to expand its customer base to more than just its monthly subscriber base who listens through satellite receivers.
Sprint is no stranger to music on mobile phones. The carrier most recently announced a deal to deliver Broadway-themed ringtones to its Sprint Music Tones service.

MIDDAY BUSINESS REPORT: Sprint to offer Sirius programming
By DAVID HAYES
Columnist for the Kansas City Star
Sprint Corp. will offer programming from Sirius Satellite Radio later this summer, expanding the radio programs offered on Sprint phones.
The deal, announced this morning, is one of several reports today concerning the Overland Park telecommunications company.
Barring changes, Sprint will slowly phase out the Nextel trade name after Sprint and Nextel Communications merge later this summer, The Charlotte Observer reported today. NASCAR’s Nextel Cup series will become the Sprint Cup beginning in the 2007 season, the newspaper reported.
And analysts at Friedman Billings Ramsey today projected that U.S. wireless companies will add more new customers during the second quarter than previously expected.
Sprint declined to comment on both the announcement with Sirius and the newspaper’s report on the post-merger name of the company.
Sirius officials, however, said the company cut a deal with Sprint to offer an undisclosed number of Sirius satellite radio channels on Sprint phones.
Sprint is considering adding channels ranging from rock and hip-hop to jazz and Broadway music, Sirius said in the announcement.
The deal is the first between a satellite radio company and a wireless company. Unlike traditional Sirius broadcasts, the music will be transmitted over Sprint’s wireless network, not by satellite.
Further details of the new service, including pricing and whether shock jock Howard Stern’s program will be included in the Sprint service, were not disclosed.
Sprint currently offers radio channels from MSpot and MusicChoice. The services each cost $5.95 a month.
The Sirius deal comes as Sprint and Nextel Communications work to complete a $35 billion merger. The companies will vote on the merger on July 13.
Officials of both companies are expected to announce the “go to market” name for the merged company before July, said Nick Sweers, a Sprint spokesman.
The Observer reported that the new company will use the Sprint name but maintain the Nextel Cup brand through the 2006 racing season.
Meanwhile, U.S. telecommunications companies are expected to add up to 5.8 million new subscribers during the second quarter.
A report from Friedman Billings Ramsey said wireless lines are increasing “as demand for wireline lines continues to weaken.”
The report said Verizon Wireless, Cingular Wireless and Nextel Partners will see the most subscriber growth during the second quarter. Verizon is expected to be the top in customer growth, adding up to 1.6 million subscribers during the second quarter.
FBR predicted that Sprint will add about 840,000 new wholesale and retail customers during April, May and June. It projected that Nextel Communications will add about 580,000 customers during the same period.
In midday trading, Sprint shares were down 32 cents, or 1.27 percent, at $24.96

I've had Sirius for over 2 years now. I tried the XM MyFy but sold it within a month. Maybe this will be my LowFi way of taking Sirius with me everywhere i go. I'm curious as to what channels they are going to stream. I think it would be cool to have a choice. Like 5-10 channels of your choice for $5.95 a month.

Question....
Since this is going to a service offered by Sirius, does anyone think that this will be "free" to existing subscribers or offered at a cut rate?
I have sirius in 2 cars and love it.

How can I get stereo sound out of my Sanyo 7400? Can I use a stereo headset or will I be stuck with monaural sound?
That be nice have to ask why did you get rid of the xm?
Well, it might sound strange, seeing as they both offer similar channels, but I like the channel lineup and playlists on the channels I listen to on Sirius better. With the XM, I was constantly channel surfing because I could never find a song I liked. Also, I think the MyFi is a little too premature. It doesn't work as well as the commercials would like you to believe. Unless you put the little external antenna on top of your head in an unobstructed area it cuts out a lot. But I don't live in a major metropolitan area that has repeaters, so that might have something to do with it.

I think that, like it or leave it, XM tends to play a lot more obscure music. Like B-sides and less known artists. I listen to a lot of the retro stations like First Wave and Hair Nation, and comparing those two channels to XM's offerings is like night and day to me. But I did like channel 29 on XM. I think it was a simulcast with a European satellite company.
Anyway, getting off topic I guess so ummm... I hope the offer First Wave and Hair Nation! :)

So basically this new service is not yet available to us YET? and also, does anyone know of any additional information as far as how much it will cost, and what phones it will be available on? I know someone else was mentioning something, but that sounded like an assumption.

Sirius Radio is available on the MM phones now. I went to my media player this morning and it was there. They have a lot of different stations. I haven't had a chance to listen that long but it's pretty cool. I think they just introduced it today with Day 1 of the merger. It's $6.95/mo

Sports will probably not be streamed. Good rule of thumb is that only in house programming can be streamed online.
Anyone know if this is available for Treo 600/650 and how?
Thanks!

After the 3 day Vision Outage, I accessed Sirius today.
1) Hardly ANY "buffering" errors!
2) It hardly skips around now... and that's to say it really doesn't skip out
3) Audio quality is now very good. Like a 96kbps Mp3!
Sirius now gets a solid 5 out of 5 in my book.
Oh, and the fact they play white stripes.... oh man.

I noticed this change occured seomtime Friday night. As I drove home from work really late (3am!) there was hardly any "jitters" or "skips" that many of us have mentioned. At first, I thought this was isolated with the Sanyo MM7400 (since this model does not support stereo sound, and further that it may not support some of the newer bitrates that Sirius may be streaming), but apparently this is not the case. However, I was getting a few 'server errors - RTSP Error 500', but this was during peak nighttime yesterday around 9pm. Perhaps they will also consider upgrading their server capacity.
With EV-DO coming out very soon (as soon as possibly 4Q 2005 - October!) the new phones will go to a separate 'portal' that supports the high speed data transfer. At that point you can probably just about forget about any 'loading' (or buffering) errors.

09-14-2005, 02:26 AM
The "buffering" time for VCast phones is about 2-4 times as long, believe it or not.
Actually, I was listening to it on my iPod headphones- it sounded damn good about 80% of the time (some songs still require a higher bitrate) , but they've REALLY improved audio quality. It sounds very nice now- and perfect for playing over the MM535's speakers.

I think they need to gear it over a lil bit say maybe a litlle rap and hard rock ONLY girls like all day of R and B i think they could have done a better job with the 20 channels of music and i bet howard wont be on the phone! it just supports old people music and lamers techno music (can I ask why there is techno?) wheres the comedian channel or anythin cool not just 60's 70's 80's i can hear this on the RADIO i want new stuff rob zombie snoop dog emeinem maybe old rap like tupac come on sirrus you guys (my opinion) SUCK

gobulldogs
09-22-2005, 02:36 PM
No, unfortunately they don't have Octane 20. I was so pissed when I signed up and saw that. The rock channels they have are Classic Vinyl (14), Classic Rewind (15), Alt Nation (21), 80s Alternative (22), and Hair Metal (23). Who picked that crap?! I listen to the classic rock channels more than anything because there's too much Coldplay and other sappy crap on Alt Nation.

I've had sirus on my phone for about 2 or 3 weeks now, i hardly ever listen to it tho because i listen to rap/hip-hop/r&b music, sirus only offers 2 channels for that genre and they dont play that good music on it, also when i close the flap on my 5600 it stops playing after about 2 or 3 minutes for some reason. i also get frequent pauses while listening to it.

09-22-2005, 08:24 PM
Sorry - didn't have my phone with me earlier, so I couldn't post the whole lineup. Here it is with the equivalent Sirius channel on the ones I know:
Sirius Hits (1)
90's & Now/The Pulse (9)
60s Vibrations
Totally 70s (7)
Big 80s (8)
60s & 70s Vinyl (14)
70s & 80s Rewind (15)
80s Glam/Hair Nation (23)
80s Alt/First Wave (22)
Alt Nation (21)
Hip-Hop R & B/Hot Jamz
R & B/Heart & Soul
New Country
Prime Country
Jazz Cafe
Sirius Blues
Broadways Best
Dance Hits/The Beat
Trance-House/Area6
Smooth Elec/Chill
And some lame-ass Sirius Interviews channel that I guess has interviews with celebrities. Why anyone would want to listen to that on their phone is beyond me, but it's there.
I can't decide if I'm going to keep it. I'm not all that impressed, but I do like having a radio on my phone. It's also the first thing that has sounded really good on my 7400's speaker and it plays when the phone's shut.
Are any of the other music subscriptions any good? (Music Choice, Mspot, Rhapsody, etc.) I'd rather get something that plays some decent rock every now & then than this Sirius crap.

I am getting Sirius in my car hopefully tomorrow if Best Buy can put everything in. For those who have it in there car can someone PM and tell me more about it and how great it is? I did a 3 day trial of XM and Sirius which is over tomorrow and chose Sirius. So is it free on your cell phone if you have it in your car? I like several of the channels Sprint has.. I almost bought a portable one but got a whole new car stereo instead.
Thanks, Rose

I asked Sprint and he knew nothing about it. He said it's something we pay to Sirius not to them so it would be up to them so I am confused. Sirius told me it was free but I think that is cause if you pay 12.95 a month you get it free on line at there website and it brings up there player you just log in. She probably thought since I said I have unlimited internet it is free, But I have to click buy now for it to come up. This guy said I should click on buy now and then see if it ask ne to log in and maybe it will be free but I don't want to try it that bad. I'll stick to it in my car and at home on my computer. Rose

Alt Nation plays White Stripes (a good variety of their stuff) , Oasis, and even the Sneaker Pimps.
Frankly, between those 3 bands, you don't need to listen to anything else. (AND they don't play Green Day on the rock station!) I think the best way to describe it is breadth, not depth- you're never going to hear the esoteric stuff that makes you love bands, but you'll certainly discover new ones.
Music Choice is absolutely horrible. I should've requested a refund. I really should have.

The 70's and 80's.. I love it!! I called Sirius back today and they said I have to call Sprint and Sprint said I had to call Sirius. So I am not even going to worry about it. But if anyone else tries it on there 8300 let me know how it worked.. Rose

Do you all realize that Sirius has replaced The Hip Hop channel with an R&B/Classic Soul channel? I have requested a refund for $6.95 on my account immediately.
I suggest you all do the same, at least those of you who want to listen to Hip Hop on your cell phone.

Yeah, I posted a thread here (http://www.sprintusers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=78098&highlight=sirius) on Oct 10 about that, I guess not a lot of people on here listen to that HipHop channel on Sirius.
I've got MSpot Radio, and it has:
Breakdown FM
Underground Hip-Hop
Hip-Hop/R&B
They all play a lot of Hip-Hop, that underground channel, I heard Common on the other day doing an interview, and they were playing some unedited versions. I was like "WHAT!!"
