View Full Version : thinking about a PDA phone

Well I am thinking about getting a PDA phone but want to see what all I can do with one. Can I download programs like ares lite for music or no? Can I go to all FULL websites? Do any PDAs have a very large HD or removable SD slot? Would like to have full internet access, better games, be able to listen to music I want and have bluetooth. Basically I want it all. So is there a phone coming out that I can do this with? Also, can you set up your email on any of the PDA phones so it goes right to my yahoo mail account or do they just use outlook? Thanks for any help.

well if you want it all then a ppc is the way to go. As far as games go, there are tons of great games. I am speaking from a 6600 standpoint, which has an extra large screen which adds to the experience. You can get a emulators for snes, genesis, gba and some other game systems to play on your ppc. Plus there are some really good games made specifically for ppc's.
As for music. You can store it on your card. Right now the largest sd card is 2 gigs. There are plenty of mp3 players you can download for your device. From the most basic to more complex with 10 band graphic equalizers. Also you can stream all your music, movies, cable tv, and pictures from your home pc free of charge and with ease by using orb.com ......
As far as mail goes. I use optonline and can receive my mail through pop3 on my device. Hope this helps a little. Once you go to a pda you will never go back to a regular phone again.

you need a 650. it has a real SD card slot (up to 2GB currently) while the new PPC6700 only has a miniSD slot (1GB max).
there's also a lot more apps available for the 650 right now, especially free apps and games.

Hm, the 6700 also states it has a 416mhz processor. And wifi but I don't know exactly how I would use that. I personally like the form of the 6700, but I see alot of people really like the treos. Any idea when the next treo will come out and what it will look like? And any differences that the 650?

It seems like you have already made your choice since you do like the form factor of a 6700. 6700 is Ev-do capable and it allows you to surf the web at broadband speed.

I use the PPC6600 thought I have not updated my profile yet and I've had it over two months now. lol. Anyway, I think the PPC is pretty cool but I do not use all of its potential. The thing I do not like is that a PDA phone is hard to use as a "true phone", at least in my book. I cannot dial with ease or text message like I can from my vm4500. Aside from that I love it.

Thats why I need one with bluetooth so I don't have to have a large pda at my ear. That is unless any of the PDAs out have a speakerphone that actually works. Either way I plan to keep my phone in my pocket while I talk (use BT or just a hands free headset at least).

The 6600 has an SD slot also. Also, while the resolution on the treo is better, I would choose the much larger screen on the 6600 any day. It is just a joy surfing the web, playing games, and watching movies in landscape mode. And just curious. What are the so much more apps that the treo has that we can’t do on our ppc's.

Do you have to pay for that?

basic ev-do plans (unlimited) start at $15 a month, which is the same as regular "Vision" plans (they call the ev-do plans "Power Vision"). In other words it's a very fair price for unlimited highspeed internet.
One neat benefit of the 6700 (for now at least) is that you can use it via USB as a wireless ev-do modem for your laptop without restrictions. No hack is required as there's an icon for doing it.
"What are the so much more apps that the treo has that we can’t do on our ppc's."
Yeah, I'm curious about this as well since people with Treo's keep mentioning it, yet I hardly feel "hindered" with WM5. (and please no one mention the rip-off Verichat for $20 a year and which is also available for PPCs)
Lack of software on PPCs is not an issue...there's almost too much in my opinion.
Re: email. The 6700 can access any POP3 email account (hotmail, your ISP, Gmail, etc.) as far as I can tell. I'm fairly positive the Treo's can do the same. Yahoo get's tricky: you can access them via the web browser, but they severly limit access to their email via POP3. I haven't explored how to access Yahoo via the email programs but I'm sure others have on both platforms (ppc and palm).

Which is better for listening to mp3s? I mean through headphones and the speaker? Also, can you hook up say PC speakers through the headphone jack and get it decently loud if you wanted to?

Can't say I listent to Mp3's on the 6700, I have a Nano for that..lol.
Reportedly the external speaker on the 6700 is crap. I have actually never tried it (I have no use for speaker phone) but that seems to be the consensus.
As far as connecting external speakers...as long as their amped I'd imagine they'd sound okay.
Although THIS (http://engadget.com/entry/1234000187064971/) just came out for the Treo if you really want to rock some external speakers...

Why are so many Treo users so into telling others "you need to have this". Man, it's like a bunch of Apple users.
I mean, I'm not knocking the 650 and in fact I would have gotten one if it wasn't about at the end of it's like or had at least ev-do. If the 700 were out today, I'd consider it. But shheesh, I could care less if people by the 6700 but those Treo users..."come join us".

I've used both Palm and PPC. I like PPC better, so I defend against the Palm-Pod People. I'm also buying a 6700 this week.

Additional note: I've taken the time to deal with SprNexIntTel and finally made the purchase! 75 minutes, but I laid out the big bills and should have the 6700 in my hot little hands by C.O.B. tommorow. (So there, bjork. I'm no longer defending without owning.)

Quit whining in EVERY SINGLE THREAD. We don't want to hear it.
Back on topic, it all depends on your needs. The treo is simple, fast, and efficient, however it lacks wifi/evdo. If you do a lot of web surfing on your phone, go with the 6700, if you would like a true organizer, go with the Treo.

Lets see I did say this (http://www.sprintusers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=79872):
I mean, I'm not knocking the 650 and in fact I would have gotten one if it wasn't about at the end of it's like (edit: life) or had at least ev-do. If the 700 were out today, I'd consider it.
I also posted about this device for treo's (http://engadget.com/entry/1234000187064971/) here (http://www.sprintusers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=79872)
But go ahead, prove me wrong..show the hundreds of posts where I slam the treo and praise the 6700.

How does that prove your point? I was telling you to stick to the topic, not on behalf of the group but on MY behalf.

Jordan, I'm probably the initiator for this whole bruhaha. I've gor experience with all the operating systems for the mobile platform and I'm strongly for WM/against P-OS.
The reason I have the problem with P-OS is that they try to force you to change to their way of doing things and give you little in return, without having to customize, customize customize... :scare:
This is also the reason I'm FOR the WM operating system. (Strange thought, but read me out, here.) With WinMob, you are given a middle ground. You have several different recognition modes, allowing you to use something approaching your normal writing style. In addition, it gives you familiar programs, - stripped down to the bone, but they will display your files fundimentally unchanged, - and allows you to transfer files back and forth. Most of the customization you can put on to the WinMob adds to that functionality, rather than having to pay to get the basic level.
I'm not completely convinced that WM is the OS to use, it is the closest to the desktop I use. If Palm would make a desktop OS, I might reevaluate my position.
Jordan
10-29-2005, 12:41 AM
Palm is simple and easy to use. I didn't buy it to look pretty, i bought it to fit my needs. If you want to customize, go ahead, i like it the way it is. Clean, quick, and efficient. I've had too many PPC's (Hp 4315, Axim X30, HP RX-3715) and I got rid of them. They weren't for me. Luckily, on the treo, I don't have to use graffiti, i have a tkb right there, for all my typing needs, don't need transcriber or the onscreen keyboard. WM is for people who like to use their stylus, i just want to take a look at my to do, jot down a note or two, make a call, play a game, and listen to some music. All can be done with a stylus and by a push of a button. palm wins hands down, imo, but if you like WM good for you. your not the only one who feels that way and neither am I. I'm glad you weren't being a prick like that molester dude, it made this conversation a lot more pleasant.

Well, I think I've been looking for this! Been a SPRINT customer since 1995 & have been one of the lucky ones, never any problems. True, I've only had 4 phones since then & my last one (Hitachi G1000) is still going strong (yup, I have the original one I got from Sprint!) Even added GPS to it. I guess that's my problem. About time to upgrade (and HATE palm with a passion) so should I get this and what GPS should I get with it. Oh yeah, no sense in having the G1000 with the new GPS unit... <sigh>

I'm very happy with my 6700, the bext investment yet and it got a good review on cnet..
