I just bought a Samsung A820 and am considering returning it as I am not happy with a couple of features (and I think there is a problem with it anyway). I noticed that the Sprint store has a few new VM 4500's left that they are selling. You have to look in the display case to find the phone and then get one of the salespeople to go unlock the cabinet and look for it. I've read that these seem to be good phones, and have a loud speakerphone (the A820 is good but I think there are better speakerphones).

But are they good enough to buy at this point or has enough time passed that this is now an 'old' phone and it's better to stick with something new?

It's all a matter of opinion. IMO, the 4500 was and still is an AMAZING combination of functions. Plus, it has a better form factor of ANY phone since. If you can live without default T9, a qVGA screen, expandable memory and all that other jazz then it is a perfectly good phone. I have an old beat up one that's in the process of getting fixed, just so i can keep it on hand as a back up. Great phone, but like i said, everyone has a different opinion...
