View Full Version : Sanyo 5600 direct ringtone download?

I live in Juneau, Alaska (where I can't get PCS Vision Service) and Prescott, Arizona (where I bought my MM-5600). Slowly, over the course of reading lots of info in the forums here, I have finally come to understand that the only way to get a new ringtone into my MM-5600 is through the web - that is, I can't use my USB cable. So, if I understand this correctly, if I can't get PCS Vision then I can't get the web and thus can't get any new ringtones. Do I have this right?

It seems incrediblly shortsighted on Sanyo's part to create a great USB connection between the PC and phone but not allow us to send ringtones; on top of that, not support bluetooth? It seems almost too crazy to be true.

Here is an advertisement for a cord and software package which, if I understand it, claims it will support sending ringtones directly to the MM-5600 without having to use the web. Can someone else look at this and see if this is the case?

If this is not the case, then is /focus the primary website we should use for getting new ringtones from our computer into our phone?

thanks

jason

*EDIT*

No, no, no. I was mistaken. If I remember correctly, there isn't a way to transfer ringtones (QCP, AAC) to Sanyo phones through a data cable.

So, that would leave you with the option of using an uploader like Focus, but if you're attempting this any time soon, use Rumkin (http://rumkin.com/tools/sprint/index.php) as Focus currently isn't working. You would need Vision to do this, though, so that's a bit unfortunate for you. ):

I asked Sanyo about using the data cable to transfer files... here is what they said:

Hi Jason,

Thanks for your e-mail. Sanyo phones only support transfer of MIDI
ringtones via USB Data Cable. There is no product on the market that will
transfer MP3's via cable to a Sanyo phone, that we are aware of.

Does this make sense? If midi files can be sent, where are they placed on the phone? To me, midi files are very limited (if they are the same midi files I am used to dealing with); you have to rely on the internal sounds the phone provides.

Yeah, that's what I remember... MIDI's only. And yes, that does suck. MIDI files are very tinny sounding.

I am not sure where you would place the MIDI file but BitPim is an excellent (and FREE) program for transferring files. They might have a good Help section, but the program is pretty self-explanatory, too.

Not sure if it works with the 5600, but you can usually fool around with the settings to get it to work with a phone that's not "officially" supported.

Unfortunately Bitpim does not officially recognise the mm-5600. you can "trick" into
thinking it is the 7400 or I believe that I was able to use the setting for the 5500.

The only thing you will be able to do though is transfer your address book. It will not allow you to transfer ringers. :(

when you PMed me I didnt realize that you cant get vision and the only way to get ringtone to your phone is via USB data cable. Well good news is yes you can get custom ringtones to your phone without vision. You have to convert the audio clip you want into a videoless 3g2 clip then store it into DCIM/SANYO101 folder then goto your phone's ringtone settings and access the ringtone from there. If it allows you to, it will copy the 3g2 ringtone you made to your phones internal memory.
Edit: if you still cant figure it out, email me the clip and I'll make a ringtone for you and email it back to you. All you have to do is put the ringtone into your MiniSD and access the ringtone from there.

Do you have the inside skinny on which kinds of video files are acceptable to use as video ringtones on the 5600?

Also, do you have directions on how to get a midi file from my computer to the 5600? thanks

This is a pretty good how-to:
