Hello,

I was wondering how long average webpages (ic cnn.com, google.com etc) take to load up on vision service. I know that the speed on test sites is about 100kbps, but I was playing with my friends treo 650 with Verizon nationalaccess and it seemed way slower than a 56k modem. What have peoples' experiences been with pcs vision.

Vision to me sometimes been slow, sometimes been fast. Vision speeds are like Dial-up, sometimes it goes faster though. It take me about 10sec to load those pages you talk about, but sometimes it takes up 1min. Depends on the pages you trying to load off vision the times vary's.

Sorry to be such a dunce, but what is EVDO and how does it work. I'm in the process of switching to a treo 650 and want to make sure my phone is optimized for maximum performance.

It's about 10 times faster than current data access. The Treo 650 will not be able to use the higher speeds and cannot be upgraded. Currently the only phone that can use EVDO is the PPC6700. The PPC6600 may be upgraded, and there will be a number of new phones being released within the next month that can use EVDO. - sheureka

Vision (1xrtt) aggregate bandwidth is anywhere from 60-120kbs generally, and I usually see at least 80kbs, whereas dialup is 24-50kbs, so yes Vision is faster than dialup, in terms of aggregate bandwidth, BUT ... the LATENCY of Vision can be very poor and often worse than dialup. What this means is that if you're transferring files, etc, Vision will definitely seem and be faster than dialup. But for interactive use, Vision may often seem slow because the latency to response is highly variable and sometimes worse than dialup. For example, using TELNET, login to your favorite host, then hit ENTER. With a decent, average dialup connection, you will get an immediate response. With Vision, it will be highly variable, sometimes immediate, sometimes major fractions of a second or even seconds before a response. Same with a small, fast, lightweight website. Remember also that Vision likes to rez-down images on websites, which may take some time. That has nothing to do with 1xrtt data transfer rates per se, but will make the Vision interactive experience seem slower than it should at times.

I've found that although the phone is supposed to peak at 144kbps, I've hit over 200 before.

I think that how the site you're visiting is formated, as well as how the server you're connecting to is configured both have a lot to do with your final speed. For instance the National Weather Service's mobile pages and the BBC News Wireless Service are both consistently smoking fast for me. You ever set up those sites and servers knew their stuff. Yahoo Mobile, in contrast, is kind of hit-or-miss: sometimes it's pretty fast, other times it's slower than Christmas in July!
