View Full Version : Should I switch to Treo

My dad just left Sprint for Verizon (he can get a 20% discount there) and so he has no use for his Treo 650 anymore. I have a MM A-700, which I LOVE, but I'm trying to decide if I should switch to his Treo. I have been messing around with it just seeing what all it has and while it does seem pretty cool, I'm just not sure. For those of you that have a Treo, is it a good phone? One thing that bugs me is how crappy sounding some of the rings are (he had some downloaded).

For what it's worth, my wife bought a Treo last week and returned it today. It kept freezing up on her. It also rebooted itself a few times. I must say that the Treo didn't impress me much.

Just messing around with his, I honestly don't see what the big deal is about them. I was going to take it just b/c it was going to be sitting around collecting dust. I will probably just keep my phone I have now. Thanks for the info though :)

Out of the box it's not much. Once you get to installing Verichat, PocketTunes, TCPMP, SplashWallet, Ringo, NesEm, Kmaps, Zlauncher, etc.. it will blow you away.

Ditto. OOB it's ok, but it really shines when you get apps on it. With a bluetooth headset it's great as a phone too, lol.

Agreed out the box its not impressive...add Ringo for true mp3 ringtones, verichat for chatting like aol im and then versamail where you can get your mail like you on your pc...then it starts to be impressive.... Treo phone needs tested at least a week before you can appreciate it.....I returned my returned my first one in 24 hours then came back to it...now I love it

I wish I could test it out fully (like with internet and everything) without having to switch to it on my account. I know I'm probably missing a lot just by using it without service. Hope that makes sense.

What about the phone doesnt impress all of you without installing 3rd party apps? Out of the box its still hands down better than the a700 and most every other phone out there (if its form factor doesnt get in your way). Additionally, almost everyone suffering from frequent resets and freezing is doing so because of some of the 3rd party apps.
Haunted- If you send any significant amount of texts or enjoy browsing the web you will love this phone.

My wife's Treo was a week old with no 3rd party apps and still froze and rebooted.

I send TONS of texts, but I was messing around with texting tonight and the keys are almost too small. I can text much quicker on my phone I have now. I think if the keys were bigger then I would definately switch to the Treo.

Trust me....you want nothing to do with the Treo 650. It has nothing but problems....take it from someone who sees people have problems with them all the time

I had a MM 5600 and have had my treo 650 for 3 days now. So far, I love it. It allows so much more. I have to agree about the ring tones though!

No offense man but "trust me" will mean a little bit more when you have more than a few days under your SU belt. Feel free to post your opinions but those are some harsh words against a very impressive device.
i love my treo. ive gone 2 weeks without a freeze :) The ringers that come with the treo arent the best. It is possible to uploaded your own without any 3rd party software. Also Palm has a lot of free applications but be warned. 3rd party can lock up the treo so i would suggest running them on the SD cards when possible. Coming from a T3 i had a lot of freezes just by some of the software i had running on my T3. I took program after program off just to see which was the evil devil. The volume on the treo isnt that great, but i use a BT headset which solves that problem. My treo is my world. Only down side i have is i miss having a small little phone, but i have adapted nicely.

UhmmMmM not phone problems.. User problems, 3rd party app problems.
Would get a Treo, but looking for something that can live in my pocket. Well, okay, the Treo can live in my pocket, but I would need a really big pocket!

That's my problem. I work at a school, but have to keep my phone in my pocket all the time and my pockets aren't deep enough for a Treo.

Well unless your planning on jumping over to Verizon then it will be quite a wait. There are some that believe a Palm OS 700 is in the works but nothing concrete has surfaced yet... And Palm hasnt done a great job of keeping things secret so even IF there is one it will be some time from now. Buy the 650.
Oh, and how small are these pockets that cant house a Treo? Its not THAT big.

My fat little fingers can do some serious texting and IM'ing on the Treo. No complaints here. They look small but the chances for error are actually very slim even though your fingers overlap other keys. No non keyboard phone could come close for texting and IM to a Treo or
Blackberry for that matter. I'd bet money on that. ;)

I love my treo. Switched from PM8200. The thing that makes my Treo awesome is LJP (nintendo emulator). I'm able to play all the games I really own on my old NES on my Treo. Plus the MP3 player with realplayer, TCPMP for movies, and fairuse wizard to make my own treo dvds really makes the phone shine.
I dont need an IPOD anymore and I can watch all my bboy dvds on the plane when I'm traveling.
Sure it crashes every now and then, but its not a huge deal. If only it had the profile for stereo bluetooth headsets, I'd NEVER upgrade..lol.

I love my Treo. I stray all of the time, most recently to the 6700, and I keep coming back. For me, it is the best combination phone/PDA. The size is reasonable. It feels like a phone when I talk on it, not like the CD jewel case Treo 300 (memories!!). I run Zlauncher and a fair number of third party apps like Verichat for messaging and Datebook5/2day for scheduling and Pocket Tunes for music/streaming audio and I have about 1 soft reset every other day. It only takes about 20 seconds of my life, unlike the 60-90 seconds that the 6700 took. Not a big deal. Trust me :) Anyway, I am happy with my Treo and I plan to stick with it until the next gen Treo comes out on Sprint. The Treo 700w looks intriguing but not enough to switch to Verizon and pay tons more for my plan.

I love my Treo too... and I can be pretty picky. Trust me! ;) But seriously, my Treo is great. I was apprehensive of switching to it at 1st, since my Treo 600s left a pretty bad taste in my mouth, and even when I did I was thinking it'd be temporary. Now I just can't go back to anything else.
And SMSing? 4get about it! My SMS use has almost doubled since I got this phone! Once you see the threaded (chat) view of SMSs you can't go back to trying to track a convo by going in and out of the inbox/sent items on normal phones. Why don't more phones have this simple feature? And my fingers fly on the keyboard now... and I was a whiz at T9.
If the phone is just sitting there, I'd activate it and try it for a week. You have nothing to lose doing that. But if you have the mentality that you're not gonna like it then you won't even be giving it a chance.

I just switched last week to a T650 from a VGA 1000 (clamshell phone with Vision). Reception where I live isn't the best. But I get a better, clearer signal with the Treo than with the VGA and calls are clearer too.
Some newbie differences I noticed but quickly adjusted to: the 650 turns on/off more quickly and you turn the phone off separately from the PDA, the phone interface is a little different, slight lag between answering the call and hearing the caller, no built in voicedialing (but nifty speed dialing/assigned key dialing), Bluetooth baybeeeeee! :tu:
Plus: you can check your calendar, make notes, etc. while talking on the phone. Switching to a PDF feature doesn't disconnect you.
Definitely give it a try.

I tested the Treo 600 and the 2032, back in the day. The 600 didn't rock my boat. The keys were too small, the loaded applications weren't able to port files between the device and desk-/lap-top and I've never really liked the Palm operating system.
That being said, I gave the 650 a good looking at. The situation didn't change much; P-OS's POS system hasn't really moved ahead with the times - hence Treo's courting Microsoft for WM 5. For my own money, I'd say go for the 6700.
If you're texting, the keys ate bigger. If you have a Windows desk-/lap-top, you can port Word/Excel/Presentation/video/audio/html files out-of-box, no extra proigrams needed. You can use landscape or portrait mode, which is nice when viewing video files (landscape is closer to a TV's 4:3 aspect ratio.)
But, if you're not going to purchase a new device, then stick with the device you're now using. The 650 is not really worth the headaches...

this is true, I've been using a treo650 for 1.5 weeks and I'm keep it over my A800. Verichat/Versamail is awesome. The texting app on the treo is sooooo cool too, and I have what you might call sausage thumbs, but I can still text faster on a treo than on any T9 phone.

from an old a700 user to a new treo 650 out of box user.. im very happy with the phone. the potential the phone has to offer is greater than what a normal phone will ever offer you. smartphones are the future.
i have versamail, verachat, tetris, soon to have some other 3rd party apps thrown on her.. i just ordered my 1gb mini sd card w/ adapter piece for 65bucks shipped so i will be using that alot.
one thing i haft to say is it was a pain in the ass to download the new 1.12 software on the phone, every time i'd sync it to my computer it would always download that update erasing all that was on my phone and not downloading what i have entered into my palm desktop. called tech support and he said to change the backup file to "backupold" and when you sync it again, it will creat a new "backup" folder w/o that upgrade on her.. works like a charm now. and probably you will need to get the 10029 PRL update if it hasnt already gotten it. other than that.. this phone will do as much as you want to invest into it. GPS, internet, music, movies, games, messenger services, email, pictures, videos, the list goes on.
switch phones man, you wont be disapointed...
