Gotta start this thread again, as it has been a while ...
any new rumors on a replacement for the i500? I need a small flip, but want all the cool new gadgets - give me a Treo 650 in an i500 form factor and you have my new phone ... anyone?

Since the Samsung i550 (http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/phone.php?p=522) was cancelled, I haven't seen or heard any rumors of a similar type of device, in terms of form factor. Even the Samsung i645 (http://www.phonescoop.com/news/item.php?n=1340) was canceled.

Glad to see this thread. I love the flip form. After spending some time here, it looks like I'll pony up for the Treo 650 when prices drop. The one complaint I've heard from users at work is that it's hard to hold it between your shoulder and ear when you try to write. That's one of the big bennies of the flip - it kinda form fits your face and will stay in place for a short time. The big, flat Treo doesn't.
But PC synch, SMDA, and bluetooth are all calling my name . . . .

There are many flip PDA GSM/WCDMA phones that either run Palm OS or Windows.

I'm aware of those. I was referring to CDMA versions. I probably should have made that more clear.

I have been a Sprint customer since 1997. I was a Sprint/affiliate employee in business sales for 5 years, before moving to a different industry 2 years ago. Almost everyone I know has Sprint so the whole PCS to PCS thing is very valuable to me.
I have a plan that probably can not be beaten anywhere. I have no reason to switch carriers to get:

All I want is a PDA/Phone that is more of a cell phone than a PDA - but still has some of the bells and whistles. Everything that comes out these days seems to be more of a PDA than a cell phone.

This is pretty much what I'm looking for. A decent phone that offers some additional productivity, has bluetooth, and is PC synch-able. My VGA 1000 is actually pretty close to what I need (except no bluetooth or synch-ability). Good phone, nice apps, decent reception, good talk/listen.
But, it seems to me, that most of Sprint's phones are now geared toward playing videos/music or taking pictures. At least the consumer phones on their website. What about offering something for adults who do a little more than just taking pics or watching ESPN?
The Treo 650 is looking like the best bet right now, esp. if I want the Palm OS. But it's still not quite there . . . . :dazed:

how is the i600 any better than the i500? The Windows operationg system isn't any better the palm. I do not believe it is expandable - i could be wrong. There is no touch screen, or stylus for data entry, no camera, no bluetooth, no 'bells and whistles' expect that it syncs with outlook. My i500 does that, so it isn't really an upgrade.
Give me the i550 - or whatever is going to come out someday. please?

Carterism,
Thanks. Good option. I'll give it some thought. A little wary of the Windows Mobile 2003, though. Mainly because I prefer the Palm interface, touchscreen, etc. over Windows' menu system. The fact that it flips may end up outweighing it.

The i550 is a dead project. For that matter, IIRC, Samsung abandoned all future Palm-based smartphones, and is sticking with Windows Mobile-based ones.
As for how the i600 is "better", it runs a more current OS, a double-edged sword, because it's new enough not to have as big a program base - the difference is that it's expanding, where as Palm OS 4.x really isn't. Also, the i600 does have an SD/MMC expansion slot, a faster processor (200 MHz vs. 66 MHz), and twice the base amount of RAM (32 MB vs. 16 MB) - the last is a bit of a wash, though, since most WM programs have a larger memory footprint than Palm OS ones. The Windows smartphones have better sound support (full stereo, in fact) than the older i500 does, which means you can play MP3s on it, something you can't do with the i500.
Unfortunately, it looks like the i600 has hit the discontinued bin, along with the i500, based on my last trip to a couple different Sprint stores. Worse, Samsung cancelled the i640/645 (http://www.phonescoop.com/news/item.php?n=1340), which was its replacement, after Verizon decided they didn't want it, and went with the Motorla Q (http://www.motorola.com/motoinfo/product/details/0,,113,00.html) instead.
So, yeah, I have no idea what Sprint's going to use to replace either of these phones. You're pretty much stuck deciding if you want to try to track down an i500, an i600 (which is still on Sprint's website), or picking one of the non-PDA phones that best fits what you want it to do.

I just sent back my ppc 6700. Nice compact design, but couldn't use it one handed like my i600. There are some other much discussed design flaws with the ppc 6700 which will need updated in a new version but the form factor was the killer for me and I really need that phone in a flip design. I like the i600 pretty well, only wish it had camera, EVDO, wifi and BT. And WM5 OS is a little deeper than Smart Phone 2003. I am ready for an upgrade but see none on the horizon.

I was in a Nextel store last night. They had one i600 left. Some guy had been running all over the Bay Area looking for one. He'd originally started out at that same store and was told they didn't have one. They found one, tracked him down and got him in the store by closing. He was happy. He had an i600 that went belly up and didn't want anything else. Phone loyalty is really something!

Uhmmm heard of bluetooth? Get a bluetooth earpeice. I have one and while on a conversation I can pull up my calender, look at documents, play games, w/the use of BugMe software am able to scribble/write things down while on a phone call. Can you do that w/ a flip?

I don't have bluetooth with my i500, but it is a flip, and with an earbud headset I can play games, use the scheduler, and all the othr stuff -
I guess I really want a phone with easy input, and a flip design. I want more than the i500, but I do not see anything better. I do lots of input while on the road, and the stylus and touch screen make this very easy. I can't see writing much of the stuff I do with the numeric keypad.
The treo line and the keyboard is nice, but I must have a flip. I have destroyed too many pocketPC/Palm screens in my pocket, and besides they are WAY to big to have in your pocket or with a pair of shorts at a bar. WAY to geeky!

You're pretty much stuck then, at the moment, with the i500, since all the other clamshell PDAs on the immediate horizon have been cancelled. :(

Hadn't heard that, though it'd certainly be interesting, especially as it looks like next version of Palm OS will be Linux-based (http://www.brighthand.com/article/ALP_Screenshots_Leaked).
It's starting to look to me like Palm, since losing direct control over the Palm OS, is strongly moving to be an OS-independent platform.
Further, it also looks like Palm is redesigning their UI for phones (http://www.brighthand.com/article/Palm_UI_to_be_Redesigned?site=Palm), which could mean more Palm-based PDA phones in the future.
