DETROIT (AP) — Grammy-winning rapper Eminem's publishing companies have filed a lawsuit in an effort to stop his songs from being used as cellphone ring tones.

Eminem's companies are going after karaoke companies and ring-tone companies.

In the suit filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Detroit, Eight Mile Style and Martin Affiliated seek a court order to prohibit five companies from selling Eminem song ring tones on the Internet.

Lawyers for the rapper, whose real name is Marshall Mathers III, said they also plan to sue karaoke companies that sell Eminem songs without getting the proper licenses.

"This is a big business. We're talking hundreds of thousands of dollars a year," said Howard Hertz, a lawyer representing the plaintiffs.

The companies named in the suit are Colorado-based Cellus USA, Georgia-based FanMobile, New York-based Nextones.com, New Jersey-based MyPhoneFiles and New Jersey-based MatrixM.

That damn wanna be HOOD rapper better learn who made hiim and who will break him!
Don't think just because you got in with Dr. Dre makes you the chit eminem...MARSHALLLL. Don't think just because you cursed out your mother makes you the chit either.

Now if some idiot actually wants to download your junk on their cell phones, they have every right to.
Don't try and sue these ringtone sites, because people will break you and you won't be able to make a return. That is, if there are any smart people left. Please people, stop buying CD's from music shops. Only buy from the people on the street. You only pay what they are worth.

If you want to learn how to make your own Ringtones, get your self a copy of Morpheus and some other tools(read: http://sprintusers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=58361) , and you don't need to worry about not being able to download your "favorite" ringers.

haha... its just that its a business now. Artists arent trying to eliminate ringtones, they are just trying to get there cut. Its not about suing and getting millions of dollars. With ringtone and karoake coverage just starting to get blanketed they are just trying to find a way to get a piece of the action when they see that a site is grossing alot of loot. It comes down to removing the ringtones by the artist suing or paying ascap agencies a monthly fee. But hey once you get that big its nothing but cheese off your cracker anyway. Hey as long as those pay sites still undercut service provider prices, Kudos to those websites for making it.

Note that it was Eminem's publishing companies that put in the lawsuit. Frankly, I can't imagine Eminem giving a particular damn, now that he's loaded to the gills and going nowhere but up in the financial side of the world. If there's anyone that stands to 'lose out' on the licensing deals, it's those lying, double-speaking, blankety-blanketing bleepity-bleep members of the RIAA!

The best way to fight the powers that be is to show all of your friends and famliy how to make ringtones for themselves. If the RIAA has enough money to sue each and every person in this country, then it's going to be rather obvious which side of the system is really broken.

I have to disagree with you guys... if someone is making money off of him, with his name and his music without his consent or a license or anything, then I can understand where he's coming from... others should not profit from HIS copyrighted material... just like the whole Napster, Kazaa, iMesh, etc issue.

I agree with you. Why should someone else be making money off of him without him getting a piece of the action. Though I do feel that most artists DO NOT need the money. it comes down to greed. I'm sure Eminem is NOT hurting for money. On the other hand, if you buy his CD, shouldn't you be able to use it in the way you want (make mp3s,ringtones etc. as long as it is for your own use and arent selling it) because you have bought it. growing up as a kid i bought records, in grade school i got a tape player and bought a lot of the same tapes i had already purchased on vinyl(lp) in high school got a CD player and for a third time bought the CD of the same thing i had purchased on tape as well as vinyl. I paid for several things multiple times. i still have 200+ tapes. many of those i also have on CD. i do admit to having downloading a lot of things off Napster and not paying for them. one reason i did it is because a lot of the Cd's from artists only had 1-2-3 songs on it i liked. to me it wasn't worth the money to buy a CD if i only like a couple of songs. i bought several CD singles but i couldn't always find what i was looking for. the majority of my CD collection are greatest hits collections.

I do think a lot of this issue comes down to GREED. record companies for YEARS have been over charging customers on Cd's. The artist of the CD gets very little % of the money per sale. I think they said Michael Jackson made about $1 for every copy of thriller that was sold. It sold millions BUT when you consider that people paid about $20 for the CD and he only got $1, it doesn't seem right.

It reminds me of the situation at Wrigley Field. the people who sit on the rooftops NOW have to pay the cubs a certain fee to watch the games. the owners of the buildings would charge people to sit on the roof and profit all of the money for themselves (minus food/beer etc). the cubs wanted some of the action also because someone else was making a profit off of something they weren't selling.

i don't mind paying money for a ring tone BUT i think it is stupid that it is only valid for 30-60-90 days. the same goes with screen savers for your phone as well as almost all of the cell phone games have monthly charges. To me its not worth the reoccurring charge. Some things like TeleNav, Garmin, Ebay applications are worth the monthly fee. that is my 2 cents worth.
