View Full Version : ORB... Stream MP3, Video, Pictures... Review

Before i start i did this review only with the Sanyo 7400 ( MM-7400), and a PC ( 9 megaharts, 512 ram, 20 gigs space, broadband conection)

Hey i heard about this thing called "ORB" it stated that i could stream video, mp3s, and view my pictures from any device that was web enabled (including cellphones). So i was like awsome im totaly gonna try this out. I registered very easly and downloaded it. Configured it by adding my video folders, photo folders and audio folders.

Next i went to my.orb.com on my cell and noticed that my music worked really AWSOME! and i could see all my pictures just like they stated, but, my videos did not work ( i had converted it to 3gp). So i was like whats up with that? so the i tried like 10 diferent video converters (including: quicktime pro, //which by the way i could not get the adio set up correctly// , Im Too 3ggp video converter // no luck ether // , SUPER // nope, not yet // , and 3GPP converter //adviced by Deval, no luck //.

Then i saw on some of the fourms that some people could stream MPG and MPEG formats to their phone, so i decided to get and MPG converter and try it. i read some forums and the y said to configure it something like 320x240, 15fps and some other stuff // and DID NOT WORK EHTER// i tried this with: AVI to MPG converter, ALL VIDEO CONVERTER, WIN AV VIDEO CONVERTER, STOIK VIDEO CONVERTER, and :irked: NONE :irked: OF :irked: THEM :irked: WORKED :indiff: .

But i was not ready to give up so i decided to download some viedos from kazaa and put them directly on to ORB //WITHOUT CONVERTING THEM// and they WORKED . SO, if you do not convert your videos they work (at leats for me maybe it was just my computer or my phone).

So there i was livng the good life watching movies, music videos and funny clips on my phone . Listening to Daddy Yankee, and Beyonce. Showing everyone my baby pictures on my phone (((/// :headbang2 :) JK :headbang2 :) ///)))

I noticed that if you go to the configurations menu on the bottom of your cell phone ( "Change speed" ) you could select if you wanted your phone to play WMV and REAL, by the way they are normaly unchecked, so i was like awsome lets try it and IT DID WORK!!!! (well i only tried WMV) now my cellphone plays .avi .mpeg .mpg and .WMV .mp3 and all other photo extensions!!!!!!!!!!

Please note that although you can play videos and listen to music on your cell by streaming them, your cellphone is a cellphone! never exect the video to sound like a 5.1 DVD movie, or the audio to sound like yor MP3 Player. The quality of the video depends on the web speed of your cellphone and how fast your upload speed on ur computer is. The audio, to me,allways sounds the same.

Overall i love ORB i would recomend it to everyone with a broadband conection and an Multimedia Cell Phone ( MM ) i give this a 9.5 out of 10did not give it a 10 out of 10 because i think the video quality can still be improved)

ANY QUESTIONS PLEASE POST THEM I WILL DO MY BEST TO ANWSER THEM

There's a whole discussion on Orb here (http://www.sprintusers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=72411) It has been reported that Orb works great on 7400. 5600 however has many problems using orb. The older version plays audio at 2x speed. The new version of Orb detects the 5600 as a pda device and nothing works on it. Since you havent played with a 5600, You probably don't know the quality difference between a streamed media and media played from external memory. Orb re-encodes your media in real time before streaming to your phone. It detects the network speed (vision) and phone (your phone model) then encodes the media to the according bitrate and phone capacity. Vision is not that fast so Orb has to encode in low bitrate. The end result is horrible. I had a hard time making out what song was playing on my phone when I use Orb. Most of the time it's stuck in the hourglass. It is also not as loud. Pod2Mob has 10X the quality of Orb and less than 1 second pause from time to time but its not streamed from your PC though.Orb is nothing to be excited about. To see what your phone can really do, download a clip of high bitrate 3gp here (http://members.aol.com/idobadassinstall/3GP/normalized3gp.zip) . You can use www.rumkin.com (http://rumkin.com/tools/sprint/index.php) to upload Sample15db.3gp to your 7400. Imagine you can watch the whole movie with quality like that. Orb is ok for someone who doesnt have external storage built in on their phone but for 5600 535 800 owners, MiniSD/TF card is the way to go. Once you got external storage, you dont wanna go back to streaming a/v.

Thanks for info. Forgive me for not getting too ecstatic. I added a 7400 to my plan so I could watch my cable tv & set up a security system. I wasn't able to change tv channels because orb had problems with new xp media center. I spent most of my time trying to adjust speeds looking for a quality that I was never able to obtain. Constant buffering & errors. Life is too short. After three days, I took the phone back for a refund & paid 150 bucks to cancel the contract. If they do get the 6500 to work, I think there is still going to be a problem with sreen size issues & tv. One of these days streaming will probably be good, but the mm6500 will be obsolete by then. I would have to agree with cpro, that mini sd is the way to go. It's excellent quality, and it doesn't depend on time of day & changing network speeds to work.

After trying ORB for the past month or so I was finally giving up becasue the songs played at 2x the speed, the webcam came in staticky and sometimes the MM would come up and go back to the webpage without loading anything. I finally checked the Orb discussion forum and saw that someone with the 5600 was able to get it work so I decided to give it another try and viola it worked! 5600 users should try again, it might work for you.

This size 10 tastes like dung. I only have a one dot signal but it loaded the tv (it's never done that before)& with a good picture. I'll try it in town tomorrow. I'm still going to have to see it work to believe it but, thanks for the info. I admit it does look a little promising.

Tried on my 8300 ... when I go to stream mp3, my cell phone resets.. not fun.

The main orb menu at http://my.orb.com is kind of funked up.. not really formatted for my phone.

Pictures seem to work, and I at least saw a the lead in picture to two videos I had in that folder. And one video actually played (think other was wmv).. but the mpg of my son played.. blocky as all hell, but audio was there.. and it did take it from my hard drive and sent it to my phone within seconds..

I don't care for the fact how it tests the speed on the connection all the time.. that gets rather old.

Anyone concerned about privacy?

Was there a software update?
...Anyone concerned about privacy? Privacy as in someone might log into your Orb account from their phone and access your music and video and pics? I dont think so b/c your account can only be logged in at one instance at a time. If you use your PC to log in, you cant log in from your phone. If you log in from your phone, your PC wont let you log in. That being said, if you had trouble logging on your phone, and no one else you know of is using your account on their phone or PC then you know something's up, better change that password.

There was an update for the Orb application for the PC, I updated. I am not worried about privacy because like cproaudio said you can only log in one at a time plus it requires a username and password. How were you able to stream your radio stations? I have a TV tuner but its not supported by Orb, I don't have a Windows Media PC.

I know on my 535 there is a separate volume setting for applications. Maybe that will solve it.....?

I finally got Orb to work on my phone but not 100%. 75% of the time after clicking the play, it goes to inactivity. I had to try it several times before it actually goes to multimedia player. Once it got there, no activity. MM player times out and errors. I had to hit the back button and try again. The volume on Orb is not loud at all. It streams MP3 well but none of my divx videos work.

When I try playing a music video, through orb.com, that's in .3gp and works fine on my miniSD card, I get this message back from orb.com: "3GP Codec Error. Go to www.orb.com/." It's either at Buffering 0% or at Buffering 80%. But still nothing. That was when I only had '3GP Media' selected.

It ran my speed test @ 103K and for my Supported Formats and I now checked Windows Media, Real, and 3GP. Still no video. I get the same following message: "3GP Codec Error. Go to www.orb.com/."

Any suggestions? TIA

Don't use 3GP b/c Orb re-encodes the video before it streams. Try other formats like avi or wmv

The 2300 is not an MM phone, so it will not stream mp3s or video.

I know that personally, for myself, I used to have some issues with ORB, but as of late (past two days), I've been watching TV w/o and problems @ 70k/sec..... although sometimes when I'd start to try to watch, it would time out (the media player), so I would just click on "Try Again" and It'd work a few seconds afterwards :D

I have trying aimlessly to stream video, mp3 etc. from my pc to my cell and it got orb codec errors, media player crashes and such. Heck, I can't even stream from the online orb site from the pc without errors. The files play on my pc via the media player and quicktime player but orb can't read the files (video files such as mpg, 3gp, mp4, etc.) and this is very frustrating. I've been able to create AAC files for ringers and send them to my via the focus tool but that is it. Can someone help me! HELP! I think I might jump off the Arch here in St. Louis! :scare:

I don't know how to help you out because I have the MM5600. It works on there, but maybe the 5300 isn't supported? Please do me a favor and no jumping off the Arch. I used to love going there when I lived in Belleville/E. St. Louis area. And, lastly, a very good friend just ended her life on Sunday by jumping in front of a train. I don't want to feel guilty for 2 suicides in a week because I didn't help out enough.

I've found the answer it's cause they were divx and xvid encoded but they offer decoders that you can install to get them to work, it's works video is choppy as all hell but the audio is at least pretty good

Question:
How can I stream in Orb my MPEG-4 video files created with the DivX, Div3, Div4, Div5 or xVid codecs?
Solution:
To stream MPEG-4 files created with the DivX, Div3, Div4, Div5 or xVid codecs, you need to install on your Orb PC DirectShow-compatible filters. These filters (or codecs) are used to decode these videos before Orb stream them to your device.

You can download and install the appropriate DivX codec for your Windows XP from the DivX Video Bundle page.

Other codecs, such as FFDshow (from Afterdawn.com (http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/codecs_and_filters/ffdshow.cfm) ) and 3iVx (from 3ivx.com (http://www.3ivx.com/download/windows.html) ) can be used to decode these MPEG-4.

Also, does anybody have a feel for how secure orb is?....are our home networks completely exposed to malicious attack?

have you tried logging in as a guest to see if it works

How can I find out if my phone is compatible with and can stream media in Orb?
Solution:
The best way to find out if your Web-enabled device is Orb-compatible (i.e., suitable to stream Live TV, Video and Audio in Orb) is to actually test it on our Orb guest site:

Enter the following URL in your device's browser: http://guest.orb.com

Click the Enter Sample Account button.

Try and stream a few of the sample TV, Video or Audio files to test the streaming capabilities of your device.
This should give you a first-hand idea of how well will your device be able to stream media in Orb.

Note: whenever you are accessing Orb via a mobile device, the signal strength of your connection varies depending on your location and will affect the quality of your streaming experience.

What radio? Standard Internet radio? Custom radio channel?
What player do you use? What stream type is that radio channel broadcast on?
Still having problems with what exactly?
You have never been able to get what to work on your MM5600?
Does "that" work on a PC?

We'd love to help you but we sure need much more information than that to even start, i.e., what works always, sometimes, what does not work, and on what device, from which location (if it varies), etc.

Please give as much details as possible, then zip up as logs298.zip and attach all your logs (C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\OrbNetworks\Logs) with your reply.

Reply from Administrator Submitted on Oct 04, 2005 11:12 AM

This then indicates to us that it is a device issue (i.e., a problem with your MM5600 itself). Unfortunaltely, we cannot specifically troubleshoot devices, as there are too many dependencies out of Orb control, such as the data plan provider's gateway, your device download speed, the quality of your signal, etc.

The fact that it works fine on a PC though, indicates that the Orb software itself works as expected.

really?, i have spoken and read others having this same problem and some not. not to be able to stream not one internet tv is weird. For the radio stations to only play 1:57 is also wierd? nomatter what station.

It may be a data plan service provider's (Cingular, etc.) gateway issue. Orb's streamer works exactly the same whether you request your stream from a PC, a PDA or a Phone. This is why we think it is most likely a device/gateway/network/etc. issue

how would i check something like that? the others on here with the same phone the Sanyo MM5600 through Sprint has there working. I pay for my vision plan with no limits or restrictions that i know of. I'm sure the others have the same plan. unlimited access to the net.

If others with the same phone on the same service have it working, then the problem may only be a configuration issue. But we cannot troubleshoot your device. Maybe you should ask users on the forum with the same phone if they can help.

If you are talking about "dmaul3300", he has a pending support request in which he reports that his MM5600 does not work either. It's not that we do not want to, but we really cannot troubleshoot devices, we don't have all the phones existing out there in our labs to troubleshoot them. Sorry.

Reply from sugaman Submitted on Oct 05, 2005 06:41 PM

yes, thats who iwas talking about, but as you see there is a problem somewhere withh the program and these devices. I want to put my request in that you guys work on this. i know you say you dont have all the devices out therr but you do have MM5600's and now you know its a known problem. thats my request. i know you would love to help and i have no doubt about that. so here it is MM5600 and the problem of streaming internet radio to play more than 1:57. and internet TV that will not stream at all.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Reply from Administrator Submitted on Oct 05, 2005 07:17 PM

"...you do have MM5600's...". This is incorrect. We do not have this device.

And we are not going to argue over it either. We do offer our users a Free software, delivered through a Free service for which we provide Free support. We expect our users to be understanding and respectful of the decisions we make in this regard. Such decision is that we DO NOT support devices that are not on our list of supported devices.

Thank you.

Dear Admin, I didnt mean any disrespect and it seems like you came off on me like i did. If it's not one that you support then i can see your point. I hope you change your mine some day because i would and i'm sure all the 5600 user would love to take advantage of your service. thanks for all the help that you have given so far.

So as you see, i'm not there best friend for some reason. I tried to tell em that i wasnt tryingto be a a%#hole but i just wanted to take advantage of there service. If you know of another product like this let meknowmaybe i'll have better luck with this 5600.
Sorry for the mispelling of your name also in the earlier post to them. :indiff:

I think they got a little irritated that they repeatedly told you there was nothing they could do but you kept coming back still wanting something from them. They are right in the sense that the program's inoperability on your phone is something they can't handle. That's either a Sprint or Sanyo problem. There really isn't anything they can do.

Well, yeah i was being forward because some people with the same exact phone works and from what they have posted they got help from them. The other thing they said was that they didnt have my phone so they dont know if it was the combatibilty or not. I was hoping since this is a popular phone that they would at least look into it.

I don't think I've heard of anyone who's been able to get it work on the 8300. There's post after post of people saying, "I have the 8300. Why doesn't it work?"

ORB is a nice concept, but I really don't think it's all that great. I've used it on my 535. With EV-DO, maybe, it would be more worth the hype.

So...you have to have a multimedia function on your phone. That's what I'm gathering. I can see what music and videos I have on my computer, but I cannot watch/listen to them.

However, I can view my pictures with no problem.

"D" they said they couldnt helpme on the 5600 man. They said that they will send you the same message. those dudes got mad at me.

i think you are right. i still have a pending ticket. i havent heard a response back yet..still waiting.

one question:can ANY sprint user get the custom radio channels to work on orb? if so what station(s) and what phone model are you using (sanyo 5600,treo 650 etc). i know every station i have tried to stream i get less then 2 minutes. some are just over 1 before it cuts out.

sugman - i do know that on one of my previous requests to orb, the person got a little mad (not like he did for you) BUT the person told me that i am requesting/asking too many questions/submitting too many problems and that i shouldnt complain because it is a FREE service and that they have a small staff and dont have time to answer each question or something to that extent.

i originally wrote him when i went to stream mp3s and they played at 2x speed. i asked him questions about codecs and video decoders etc. i read the message boards but didnt see much information to what i was looking for. i sent him my log files as well as took screenshots of settings and error messages.i wanted to try to make it easier on them.the more information i can provide them, the easier it will be to troubleshoot the problem.
you take your car into the shop to get it fixed and tell the mechainc - it makes a noise.. the mechanic is like OK - when does it make a noise, what are you doing when it makes the noise etc. the more details you can give, the easier it will be to troubleshoot.

i thanked him for getting the mp3s to be playing at normal speed and was able to stream live tv and most of my videos(some i am still having trouble with rm files). i told him orb is an AWESOME service and that i was amazed it was FREE.

I will let you know if i do find anything out on the audio BUT it doesnt look good. are there any other programs/services that you can stream radio. can you stream radio on M2audio? probably not. i think some of problems on my machine is that i have so many codecs on my machine - that issues are occuring. i have 7 mpeg-2 encoders as well as many codecs. i was trying to download various things to get orb to work. in the next couple of weeks when i get some free time i think i will reformat my pc and start all over WITHOUT installing all the stuff i did before.

sugaman - i will let you know if i find anything out from orb or if reformatting fixes my problem. the last solution they had me try was to delete all of my codecs and mpeg2 encoders and then reinstall the ones i use (quicktime alternative - realtime alternative - divx and the dscaler5 and see if that works). well i cant figure out how to delete some of those. i dont have a unistall for them and dont show up in add/remove programs.

Thanks, dmaul. Yes, I do have a supported tuner card. I wrote to orb technical support and this was there response:

Even if I get my channel guide I am probably still out of luck because my IR Blaster is not USB-based and I think orb only supports USB IR blasters ...are they expensive to buy separately?

I got my ir blaster with my tv tuner card. i bought the usb ads instant tv deluxe which came with one. i remember before i bought mine tv tuner i looked at prices and the cheaper ones didnt come with the ir blaster. i searched the internet to see if i could find one. i did find one for about $50. i emailed them and asked them if it would work with orb and i never got a response back. the sites i looked at i saw them listed but not sold seperatly. im sure there is probably someone that does. after looking online for about an hour i decided the heck with it, i will spend more money and get the usb tv tuner card with the ir blaster. it was more expensive but it does come with other software as well.

have you filled out a service request at orb and sent them your log files so they can look at them. i know at the beginning when i first tried that i got the m32 and m30 errors. if i remember correctly. i sent them my log files and they noticed at the time that the 5600 was not being recognized correctly. it was being recognized as a pda. it took over a month but they were finally able to get my phone to be recognized.

some of the problems are also is that they dont have every phone/device to test out.it is hard for them to troubleshoot a device that they dont have. did you try to the test site out on your phone. did that work? if you log into my orb on the computer, can you stream the mp3s or do you still get the error.

What do we mean by "getting it to work"? If getting video files on my laptop to stream to my 8300 counts, then yes it works for me. I haven't had much luck with audio files (probably because I used VBR and non-standard codecs).

I don't have a tv tuner, so I have no idea whether it will work with that, but as long as it can stream it in the same manner as the video files I should be all set.

I did nothing other than install the software on the laptop and browse to the correct location on the phone.
