not a major update, but its been a LONG time since I've been able to add new stuff (vacations and then renovating & moving). Lots of people have been emailing me asking if I'm still doing updates, so I just wanted to let everyone know that I have added some new AAC ringers to the site.
Hopefully i can start adding stuff regularly again.

This is due to a problem with certain phones. Samsungs can only download files 32 characters in length (not including the extension). When Don gets a chance, I'm sure he'll update them... it's a tedious process.

i'm in greece on vaction right now, so haven't had any time to do emails or deal with this (the hotel does have a pay for internet service, so i got an hour to kill...lol). Anyhow, I thought i paid before i left for vaca, so i'm not sure what's up. i just send a message to customer support, so hopefully they'll realize i did pay my bill, or tell me what the issue is. the hosting site i have is dirt cheep, but not the greatest with service; but what can you expect for cheap.
anyhow, i'll be back next week, so hopefully it'll all be back to normal soon.

Well its not just a simple billing issue, ugh. I got a reply from them saying i'm using up to much system resources. I think its due to the fix i had to impliment that was cause by sprint's compression issue (giving the size mismatch problem). my hosting company wouldn't load a module i needed that would fix it; so i had to write my own solution in PHP that may be using more resources. i have to get back to them. but here's the reply i got:
Your account was in violation of the following, as listed in our AUP:

System Resources

Any one site account found to be utilizing excess system resources at any given may shall be suspended. We reserve the right to terminate such account if we see fit.

Your account is now under review to determine appropriate action. Your cooperation is recommended to help this process.

yeah, it was up for a while. My hosting company sent me an email stating that my account was unsuspended but still under review. A few hours later I look and its down again (with no communication or email sent to me). I'm again trying to contact them to see what can be done so they stop suspending my account. They either have to install a Server Module on the web server (which I requested and was denied like a month ago) or let my hand-made script run (which is what they're claiming is using up too much system resources). I guess I'm back to looking for a new home for DBRingers, a new hosting company..... *sigh*
I'll let you all know if there's any more developments.

yup, it does cost money. You can't use a free service because you must have access to apache server settings for MIME types and my site needs PHP (a server side programming language) and mySQL (database access) to run. Free hosting sites don't allow for any of that. it can get pretty involved.
The place I'm currently using is dirt cheep ($2.50 a month) but apparently have some limitations and not the best service. Another place I used to use was Digital Sense Hosting; great and reliable service, but more expensive (about $20-$30 a month) and i always would go over my plan's bandwidth allotment. I'm going to look at last 2 suggestions here as well as another offer I've heard about.

Hey Don ... Does your ISP block port 80? Vision has a good idea ... you could probably get an old P3 500 and make it into a server fairly cheap.

even if his ISP blocks port 80, its an easy workaround, as you can configure a server to route to any port, and just set dns/links/bookmarks accordingly. for a while, i was using a random port while i was configuring my port 80 security

It is sad that you have to keep answering the same question over and over. I hope that you work things out soon as your service is very much missed. You are very welcome, thank you for doing what you do. I can't wait to get home and show my daughter that it is back up and running. Thank you so much again. I will help out by making a donation as I am thrilled with your site.

I joined this site called freeringers.com. They charge $8.00 for so called "unlimited downloads". They claim to have lots of great music etc. When I get in to the member section it is stuff you have to create and upload yourself then download the finished product, needless to say I was a little ticked. They were very misleading.

nope, thats a new issue. I'm not sure what would be causing that; I haven't heard about anyone else having that issue until now. I know the 905 issue is old (and i think fully solved now) but this 906 is usually caused by a bad GCD (descriptor) file. On my site those files are generated automatically to ensure they are right; and as far as I know all the attributes in my GCDs are valid. So basically I guess I'm saying I'm not sure what the problem might be. Anyone else having this issue? and if so what phone you using?

laursifer

906 is a length error. Means the filename's too long. Samsung's have the smallest limit, LG's come second I think. Louie and I went through this on his site so he could make sure all of his files were Samsung-friendly.

There's a way around it, but it's kind of a pain and I don't know if Don would be comfortable with me explaining it as it involves a little bit o' digging through his files.

yay for your site thanks again for making ringtones and pictures XD much appriciated

laursifer
12-30-2005, 03:59 PM
OKay, here are the steps to getting around the file length problem. The smallest file size we've established so far is 32 characters not including the extension.

1. Go to Don's site on your computer

2. For this example, I'm going to download the AAC ringtone "Nine Inch Nails-Dead Souls-Intro" from the Alternative section

3. I enter a landline number I know is inactive in the phone number field, but you could just as easily enter your cell phone number--just ignore the text it sends you as you won't need it and it won't work anyway because of the filename length (Actually, I haven't even checked the filename length of this ringtone; I just wanted to use NIN as an example)

4. On the next page you will see this:
The download notice has been sent to XXXXXXXXXX If you do not recieve the notice shortly, you can type
http://www.dbringers.info/aacringers/Nine_Inch_Nails-Dead_Souls-Intro.gcd
into web browser on your phone.
What you want to do is copy that GCD URL and paste it into your web browser. You will be asked to open or save it, hit open and it should open in Notepad. If it doesn't, save the file to your desktop, start Notepad and open it from there.
5. Once you have the GCD file open, you can scroll through to find the URL for the ringtone itself under the descriptor line 'Content-URL.' Copy and paste that URL into your web browser. The file will start to play through your browser, assuming you have the proper plug-ins. From there, you would go to File, Save Page As and your Save dialog box will pop up.

6. At this point, you can change the filename length to something shorter. For example, I will change this to "NIN - Dead Souls Intro.m4a"

7. Hop over to an uploader like Rumkin or Focus, and send yourself the ringtone.

hey all. I think i got the uploader for my site working. the Public Gallery option isn't available yet, but will be soon i hope. This option will allow you to upload your stuff into a gallery that everyone can see and use (download stuff you upload). But for now the default is private, meaning it will not be displayed in any gallery.
you can upload:
Ringers: AAC Ringers (*.m4a), Voice Ringers (*.qcp), Midi Rings (*.mid)
Videos: *.3gp
Animations files: *.pmd
Pictures: JPeg (*.jpg), Bitmaps (*.bmp), non-animated Gif File (*.gif), *.PNG
I think i got all the bugs worked out, but let me know if it works for you or not

Ok, I admit it, I’m a geek; and program when I’m bored. So because of that I added a new feature to DBRingers.
I made a feature where you can create your own custom screen savers on the fly. You can pick the background you want; type in the text you want and format it; then send it to your phone. Right now its in “beta” meaning I haven’t worked out all the bugs (but it seems to work) nor have I polished it to where I’d like it. There will be more background options and such coming too. But I’d like for people to try it out and let me know what they think. Does it work, does it not work, is it cool, is it lame? Any feedback is appreciated
Also, I haven’t gotten any feedback on my uploader; so at this point I’m assuming it works.

Well I figured out why I went over my bandwidth. People were greatly miss-using the uploader. I guess its my fault for not implementing better safe guards. I looked at the uploads directory and was amazed! People were trying to upload 2MB files to there phones! People uploading .exe files, .pdf's, zip files, even 1 was a CDA file; yeah a CD music track! I’m not talking about a ripped mp3 or wav file from the cd, but the entire CDA file. And many, many full length MP3's and .MOV files (which no phones support mov's anyhow). So I guess I need to implement size limits and type check before I upload; cause uploads counts as bandwidth. I realize that not everyone is a phone geek like me, but what makes you think you can upload a CD track to your phone? And what are you planning on doing with a zip or EXE on your phone!!???? Also, I thought I clearly stated on the uploader page what types of files are accepted. Oh well, my bad.
Ugh.
Anyhow, when my billing cycle restarts I should be up and running again; and I guess I need to re-think my uploader. grrrrr.....

Poor Don :( So much drama with your site the past few months. It's just too darn popular.

And that CD track was me. I thought, 'Hey, I have a music phone, I should be able to put a CD track on there, right?' Then once I did that I thought, 'Omg, how about an executable?! I could install WinRAR on my phone!!!!' And then I thought, 'Whoa, how cool would it be if I sent myself a QuickTime movie?!?!?!'

I tend to feel that my site is a bit confusing for some. What do you guys think? I want to make the site intuitive. So often people do stuff like send me pictures or texts that they meant to send to others. They also try to download ringers that won't work for their phones, or they just send me emails basically saying they are confused with some aspect of the site. I’d like some feedback. Like if you think the overall layout of the site could be made better somehow let me know. Also I’m thinking of doing a bit of a facelift for it as well. Anyone good at doing custom graphics/logos? Any ideas of how it should "look". I think I got allot of functionality built into the site; but maybe not the best presentation
Any feedback is appreciated.

Well if you are a web geek, like I am when I get the motivation... you dould definitely do some graphic design to the site to make it look pretty. But your site is very functional. I personally am EXREMELY grateful that you run this site - I get the advantage of AAC ringers for the first time ever without paying $3 or more to get them, and you always seem to have the latest songs!

The only way you could optimize your site once you start getting so many songs (which you have a lot already) is to implement a database so its searchable and displays files based on criteria (category, artist, etc)

But I can't imagine you'd want to go to all that trouble. But if you do, PM me and I'll show you a couple easy ways to get some nice templates that you can just pop content into with very little work. As for the database stuff, that gets complicated. But as I said, your site is very functional as-is.

I agree, the search function is needed. the good news is that my site is already manged with a database. use mysql to keep tract of catagories of music, download counts, and such. so it should be pretty simple to impliments a search. admittedly i've just been lazy, lol. but i think one would be of great use. i think that will be the next on my todo list.

You let me know what you're looking for and I've got your back, Don. If not for the fact that you're one of the best members we have, then for the fact that you like NIN. :D
Awesome, I was hoping you could help me out, your great with this stuff!!! Basically any non-cluttered image would be good, like the ones I got there now. Stuff that's not an actual picture of something, but more like a patter or abstract or ambient image. Stuff that you can put text over without it being too distracting. I'm attaching something as an exampled so you can see what I mean. But not everything has to be as "girly" as the example I’m attaching, lol. Even some industrial or "NIN-ish" stuff would be cool, you know what I mean ;) Actually the album art from the Downward Spiral could be cool even; I might have to take out the ole' scanner for that lol.
Thanks Laursifer, you always rock!!!

Okay Don, here are some I dug up. They're pretty generic, but I can do these in any color really. Tried to give you a little spectrum here. I'll come up with some theme-based ones for both the girlies and the fellas :)

If you need these edited at all, just let me know. Some of them are pretty dark, but you allow color-control over text so I think it'll work out.

yes, as some of you have probably noticed the site is down due the bandwidth (again). I thought i'd just announce it here now before everyone starts asking what happened to it. it will open up again when my billing cycle restarts. Also I guess I will be removing my uploader to prevent this from happening again. If I continue to go over my bandwidth though I will have to make it a member's site (free still).
Anyhow, it will be back, don't worry.

Thanks for the update! I don't know what kind of arrangements you have with your current host or how satisfied you are with them - but I have used midphase.com without issues for quite some time. They are quite inexpensive and offer unmetered bandwidth (you start with 100G of transfer and then can simply add more) - I'm not sure if your type site would have any restrictions to the 'unmetered' part but they are good people over there and you can actually talk to real LIVE folks! Just a thought... if switching was something you may be looking into down the road.

I also use www.1and1.com for my web hosting. They are pretty cheap. I personally am on a 3 year free trial of their professional package. Right now they have a 9.99/month business account with 1,000 GB transfer volume per month. Or 4.99 for a home account with 500GB of transfer. Plus a lot of web goodies.

Not a plug but I've been really happy with them.

Ugh, I really am not happy with my current host. I've been looking at the one you mentioned, and so far I like. I'm trying to find a FAQ of some sorts on the their website but without much luck yet. I'm wondering what version of PHP they provide (I'm hoping 5), what unmetered bandwidth is (is it truly unlimited???), and weather or not their Apache server has the headers_module module installed (so that I can append Cache-Control: no-transform so that sprint does not compress images causeing 905 errors when people download them). The last one is not overly important because I’ve already written code as a workaround.

Yes, version 5 of PHP is available - If you decide to go with them mention that you want on a server with support for 5 as not all of their servers run it yet. As for 'unlimited' bandwith this is their policy:

14.3 midPhase Unmetered Bandwidth Policy
midPhase provides Unmetered bandwidth for Mega-PHASE, Xtra-PHASE and Pro-PHASE customers. Because of the potential for abuse, midPhase has put into place the following policy which governs the use of our Unmetered Bandwidth Policy.

There are two classifications for midPhase-hosted websites. These are:
a. Unmetered Eligible, and
b. Unmetered Ineligible

To be classified as "Eligible" your website must follow the following rules:

* 90% or more of your images, download files, etc. must be linked from an HTML or equivalent web page that is accessible to the public.
* Your website is comprised mostly of web pages, and images used on those pages.
* Your website is NOT primarily designed to provide files for download.
* Your website is NOT adult in nature.

If your website is any of the following, it will be Ineligible for Unmetered Bandwidth and will be provide a bandwidth limit of 60 GB per month for Mega-PHASE, 65 GB per month for Xtra-PHASE or 75 GB per month for Pro-PHASE.

* If your website is a download website (designed primarily to provide files for download by visitors,) or is an adult website, a website comprised of an image gallery only, a website which contains a message board as its primary 'attraction' or any websites that contain shopping carts with over one hundred items are not eligible (ineligible) for Unmetered Bandwidth and will be assigned limits as stipulated above.

* Unmetered Bandwidth Increases. All midPhase accounts will start with their normal packages bandwidth limit. Once you have used 80% of your bandwidth, simply contact tech support for an increase. At this time, we will verify the type of account you are on and insure that you are eligible for unmetered bandwidth and then increase it by an equal-to-original increment.

Still up to 75GB per month on a $12 per month Pro Phase account is quite a lot - and I thnk you can buy more.

They have a great forum - at http://forum3.midphasetalk.com/index.php? or like I said, just give them a call and talk about your needs. I've never had any major problems and the only minor problem I had was with an email issue that was resolved quickly -

Yes, Don does not charge for access to his site. If you input your phone number on his site to 'receive' the link to the download. You do receive a text message with that link - if you do not have a text plan you will get charged either 10 or 20 cents. Your unlimited vision plan will mean that you do not get charged for the file transfer (which is in addition to the text message).

Good, I renewed with them for another year back in November, I don't know how much email you use, but I wouldn't recommend the "Spamalizer" feature. We use our account mainly for email (in lieu of self hosting an exchange server), and I added spamalizer to it. Not worth it though - it doesn't catch near as much as I had hoped.

Hopefully they can provide you with the bandwidth you need!!

I'm working on that. I totally agree that is definately needed. its just the way i store the screen savers its kinda awkward; but i am working on it. it would be much more functional. (should i filter out the more provacative images from the "new" or "most popular" listings when I do it?)

Ok, with search working pretty well I got around to tweaking the public gallery. it is now easier to add your own pictures to the gallery; you can do it straight from the gallery instead of having to goto the uploader. i also fixed a bug with it not all of the uploads and not showing the newest first. it seems to be working as expected now.

Might want to keep those things out. That way nobody sees any unexpected wang or meat curtains or whatever. Maybe there could be a seperate "recently added" link in those sections, although at this point it's not like there are hundreds to scroll through. Keep up the good work!

Well it looks like there was a server crash; and it appears that my site might have been the cause. Apparently there were too many requests to be handed; so they had to shut down my account. It may have been a DOS (denial of service) attack or way too much traffic (but I don’t think I’d get enough traffic to crash a server). It could also have been something else because I noticed some database corruption yesterday morning before it all happened, but not sure if that was the cause or result of the problem. Anyhow, they have unsuspended my account and we’re testing it out to see if anything like that happens again. I’m working with my host (who is really helpful and seems much better than my last host) trying to figure it out. But for now the site is back up and running, but go easy on it, she’s fragile.

Anyhow, they have unsuspended my account and we’re testing it out to see if anything like that happens again. I’m working with my host (who is really helpful and seems much better than my last host) trying to figure it out. But for now the site is back up and running, but go easy on it, she’s fragile.

Is it safe to assume that you are back up and running now?

just a quick question for you don. on say a 25 to 30 second sound clip how big are the file sizes?

I guess this would also apply to louie.

i mean in all seriousness if they are 120-150k, then that is a little big, imo when i can get the same thing for b/w 80-100k. your sites are good but like i said there is no way of telling how big the file sizes are till you dl them and if you have limited space now then you would want to conserve space with smaller file sizes. if you could let me know an average then it would be appreciated.

Average is hard to say, because they're all different. Depends on what format you're downloading as well. If AAC, I would say 100 is average, but keep in mind their ringtones are made to actually sound really good. That comes at the cost of a larger file in many cases.

say 30 sec m4a's. are they pushing the 150k mark?

Yes, and sometimes more, BUT... you could always ask them to edit specific ringtones. Never, ever hurts to ask and they're the two nicest guys you'll ever meet. I think with a lot of them, the file size would go down if you just asked them to lower the volume. I don't like loud stuff, so when I make custom ringtones I yank the volume down. For example, I had a 181KB ringtone from somewhere that was made to be loud and clear. Since I don't care for loud, I lowered the volume in Nero Wave Editor and now the file is 68KB.

i used to make them at them at a lower data rate (28 kbps) but found that 32 sounds significatly better. and most people that are really into ringtones don't mind having a larger file size as long as they have something that sounds really good. not to say thats what everyone wants; but i'd like my site to be known for top-quality. you're right though, some people don't have all much storage space on thier phones. and i could use a lowr bit rate again, but the quality loss is actually noticable and don't want to do that. what i will start doing though is having the file size displayed on the WAP site too. I already do on PC version, but didn't realize that I don't on the WAP side still. This way people can at least see how big it is before they download.
thanks

now the download counts for pictures work correctly. the counts for ringers has always worked, but the counts for screen savers have read 0 for some time now. i finally got around to fixing it (in order to create a most popular feature soon). This also works for the Public uploads gallery. so if you add something there, you can see how many other people use it too.
(little note, these counts are for PC downloads, not from when you download from the wap version)

Ok, made it show the newest 10 images show up on the main page (of the pc version) and there's also a "newest screen savers" gallery under the the main screensavers page. on the wap version it shows the newest 24, on the pc version you can choose how many you want it to show. ejoy!
feedback is always appreciated!

GreenDayPunk74 is correct. The big writing at the top op the homepage:

Sorry, but they won't work for any other wireless carriers (This includes NEXTEL phones), ONLY Sprint PCS.

yup, sprint only. even though Sprint and Nextel (and by extention Boost) are connected via a buisiness model, the technical way thier handsets handle data downloads is totally different; and I only know how Sprint's actually works.

i went over my bandwidth for the month yet again.
i'm working on making this a member's only site now. not for pay, it'll still be free. but i have to limit the access to the site. originally it was meant for me and frineds. but now due to the popularity of the site, it goes down for everyone; defeating the purpose of me making it.
so it'll be a member's site where i will you'll need to log in to access. hopefully this will limit it enough to keep my bandwidth down.
and before anyone asks, no i can't buy more bandwidth, i pay for this out of pocket. and i got a good internet host now, so its not like i have a bad plan with low bandwidth; its just the site is too damn popular.

You are a much bigger person than I, DB... I'm pretty sure I would have started charging people already.. (not at ALL a suggestion... :hee: ) It's obvious that you've put a lot of time and money into it, and I think everyone can see that.. As far as the membership, I definitely think it will keep the more casual users (how many of us here on SU are casual users tho??) away and you'll be able to keep it under your bandwitdh..

Anywho.. thanks! you rock! :headbang2 :music:

i'll keep you all posted on how to become a memeber (and again it will be free). I've just started to impliment it, but basically there will be a application process where you will request memebership (as well as create a username and password), and i will get a notice of it and then approve or denie memebership. and then you'll need to use your username and password to login (the site will use cookies).
anyhow, i hope this goes smooth, and i'll keep you all posted
