oh yeah, by the way, it was on my a900. I'll definitely try it out tonight on my a940. They work well as screensavers, by the way!

Screensavers? you mean like a standby animation (after not doing anything for a few secs) or you mean on the 900 you can actually set video as the wallpaper??

Yeah on the a900 and the a920, u can set videos as your actual wallpaper, not just as standby animation...

So I created a email address for people to send stuff to. its dbcontent [at] gmail [dot] com.
Anything people wanna send will be appreciated. But don't be offended if I don't use something you send (not you personal laursifer :) just anyone in general).
But some rules of thumb for content i use:
Screen Savers should be at least 240 x 320 and good quality. Its best if they are resized to 240x320, but they should be at least that to avoid distortion.
AAC ringers should be under 30 seconds, 32kbps (data rate), and mono.
Video clips (yup, i do video now) should be some format that quicktime can handle.

Thanks again all! :)

Dude, EFFIN SWEET!!!!

I checked out the videos. sweet. I figured out as well on my 900 that you can set the video as wallpaper. what I am looking for is the little animation of the two stick figures banging ont he screen trying to get out. or the stick figure one titled martial arts vs modern arts where the little guy is all trying to be kung fu and the other just pulls out a gun.
But what is there is sweet. I downloaded the angry cat one. my wife loves it.
Thank you

The ringers are more or less just a test for right now. Kind of a proof-of-concept to see if i could actually get them to work. i realize lots of you are excited about them and wanna see more but don't expect a huge library of them any time soon. They're rather difficult and time consuming to make. and i'm still pretty much testing them out right now, seeing if they work for most phones, and how i can best organize and present them. as always with my site, its a work in progress that you're getting to see. i hope to add more soon, but we'll see....

1st off, yes, i'm still going through applications, its been an endless stream. be patient please.

2nd, what i really wanted to do was ask memebers to test out my new video section. i don't have many videos available yet because its still in testing, but i'd like some help. i've tested the vids with a sanyo 9000 and a sanyo 7400 and they seem to work fine. can members with other phone types try (of course your phone must be able to take videos to play them). They're in 3gp (and 3g2) format, so it should be pretty much univeral for any video-capable phone (unlike mp4 files, not as well supported). i'm working on a method to thumbnail the videos, but for now i wanna make sure the fundimental dowloading and use part works.
Thanks to all who can help.
d

The videos work fine on both of our phones (mm7500). thanks don......popbottle98

unfortunately i don't know of any way to convert from QCP to any other format. you can convert mp3's and such to AACs using various programs (like itunes for free), but once they're converted to QCP I don't know of any converter or editor that supports that file type.

yeah, for the shared server hosting it costs me $90 a year; and i have 2 servers (so i already dished out almost $200. for the dedicated server (where I would have full control over the server and no limitations) its $180 a month.

i've looked into hosting it from my house. i do have the equipment (server and such), but I don't have a means of hosting it on the web. my ISP says I cannot have a static IP address and I cannot have a domain name mounted (violates TOS). They do have a "buisness" package, but again costs $$ and even worse is its not available in my area.

Don, here's a question - Is there any way for you to track how many download requests from different IP addresses, on the average? I only ask because it seems like you might want to consider putting a ringer request cap in, just to make sure that you don't kick yourself over the limits. Then, for a fee, you can raise the cap, incrementally for increasing raises in limits.

Sad to see that this is beginning to tax your personal resources, Don. You've set yourself an impossible task of offering everyone everything without requiring them to give you a dime, and I admire you for keeping to that for so long, especially considering that this is more a hobby (or should I say a second, non-paying job?) for you. Most companies specifically providing content don't even do half of what you offer.

one of my frineds suggested that too. but to be honest what i really enjoyed the most was creating the site itself. making content and stuff for people to enjoy of course was nice, but what I really took the most pride in was creating and developing a site that was usefull and functional. thats why i keep trying to create new features. i wanted to see how far i could go with it. i liked making something that would make people think, wow, this is a cool site. but sending out content (ringes & images) via email is a nice idea and all, but it takes out the convenance & accessability for the user (most people here know how to make thier own anyhow, but they still liked to use my site because it was easy). and for me it takes out the fun of what it was to create and grow dbringers.
i do appreciate the suggestion though, thank you. if someone else is willing to manage and mantain a mailing list, i can help with the ringers that i already have if they want to use them.

i could maybe develope a method of doing that. but at this point i don't know if it would help. right now my host isn't even allowing me to access my files; they say they won't un-suspend that account unless i purchase a dedicated server. so i can't tell them that i have a method that might make things better and have the unsuspend the images account on good faith. also the problem isn't directly traffic (though it is related). the problem is my scripts are run so much that they cause my site to use too much of the shared memeory and cpu time of the server. so if i add more overhead to the site of checking IP's and such, it might actually make things worse.
And thanks for you nice words. i really did like trying to make a site that even outshined the ones that charged. i was always trying to be innovative too. and i sucesfully made a huge site, just too huge for its own good. like i said before, i now realize why no good sites stay totally free for long; it just can't be done.

It sounds like you need a script overhaul. Something where bulky lines of script and code are tightened up and uncluttered. Everything will work the same, but much more efficently. However, I understand that they won't let you back in on that idea alone, but if they did, it should help. Do you know anyone that can do that for you? On the cheap of course.

Perfectance

The idea I have is solely based on the possibility that your host will let you make these changes without forcing you to get a dedicated server.

What if you have less on your site? Make it only ringers permanently, and maybe have a tutorial on how to make and upload screensavers, instead of hosting your own. Take down the user submitted uploads of screensavers and take down the videos. Trim the fat in a way. Will that help?

For the ringers, don't have all of them on the site at one time. RedvsBlue.com had this idea first, so the credit goes to them. They have many videos for download that they made, but instead of all the old videos ready to download every day, they rotate them. A few one day, a few the next. This way, they can control how much can be downloaded and transmitted at one time. This relates to you like this...

You keep the newest and most popular ringers up all the time, but for the other ringers, you rotate them. For example, have half of the retro 80's up for 3 days, and then the other half the next three. Include a placeholder to let people know that the other half will be up on whatever date is next.

I don't assume to know your situation, but I hope this could work. Anyone else out there have any ideas?

I admit my code could be tighter. i've been teaching myself PHP as I've been developing the site, so some of the bad-habits and mistakes i made when first learning some functionality still exist in my code. but even if i did clean it up (not that my host is willing to let me open it without dedicated hosting anyhow), i'm not sure if it would help. i think the main thing that is a problem is the image resizing. i allow the user to select the image size and if it doen't exist on the server already it will creat it. the image resizing is the only thing i can think of that's process intensive. i think it was ok for a while, but i foolishly opened up the public-uploads gallery to non-memebers the night before they took the images site down; so i think the extra traffic & use is was what brought it over the edge. The ringer site obviously doen't have this resizing functionality, so all my code over there just mainly constructs html pages and queries the data base
i'm not sure whre i can host the images portion of the site still

I think this is a great idea - although I was thinking more along the lines of a raise some money to help bring back the other half of DBringers!

We do need to make sure that we don't get too ambitious with any monetary plans - the last thing we need to do is to get those record industry people all riled up and on Don's case!

That said, I think it would be nice to get people onboard with donating to at least get Don's server back up so Don can at least get the info off the site, if not to buy a server and get it running. If a dedicated server costs 180/month, 100 people donating $2 a month would handle that amount safely. That's 24 bucks a year - and less than a Starbucks grande coffee a month! (Where's Sally Struthers when you need her?!?)

Really???? Well this could be very helpful, this is what i truely need (and then we can finally get the "don't worry be happy" one usable again :)). Would you mind the screen savers? Screen savers just have some additonal overhead of resizing the jpeg files, but if youre server is dedicated it shouldn't be an issue; its up to you though.

I would have no problem donating again. And again..and again. However needed. I've loved DB since it started. I do realize that the images and videos portion is going to be difficult, but, maybe we can all come up with something. Channel's server would be awesome!! And by donations, I was speaking of small donations by the way. Nothing huge. Just enough to help :)

The ringer site obviously doen't have this resizing functionality, so all my code over there just mainly constructs html pages and queries the data base
i'm not sure whre i can host the images portion of the site still

hey, tyler (atkins) at the Rumkin Uploader Site (http://www.rumkin.com/tools/sprint/) may know some stuff to help with the PHP scripts.

his email is fidian@tiny.net

oh, on the JPEG resize thing his uploader does it too, but it's proprotional, not the actual screen size.

Phone web browsers support cookies, I think as far back as my 8100 at least (i member the delete cookies optoin being in the browser menu). Cookies should be on be default, but i thought there was a way to turn them off on my 7400, though my 9000 now only seems to have the option to delete cookies but not turn them off. maybe others have some input on this. but the native phone browser does support cookies.

maybe so, but grits and eggs isn't run by a single person as a hobby with no advertising income from the site. it i open it back up to everyone again it will overload the shared server and my host will require me to buy a dedicated server which i cannot afford.

Thanks NYC. Its ok now. water is still seeping up from the ground, so even thought thankfully the rains have finally stopped, the water will keep coming up from the ground for a week or so. But I just let the puddle in the low end fill a bit and then turn on the pump for a few hours and turn if off when it drains. at least its not rising like before and extinguishing the pilot light in the hot water heater like before, ugh. Did you get hammered with rain down your end? The whole Boston area got it hard!

One of them sounds decent, I can do all the things I want to do with the site; but of course its not free. It won’t cost me the ungodly amount that my current host would. When you get a chance, give me a PM on here. I'd like to see if I can help you out by taking on some of the registration e-mail (#) load you get every day off your hands. I know that you like handling it personally, but it might take away a bit of the administrative burden. I imagine that if we can find another 4 or 5 more volunteers (#), it might actually be easier. Let me know, once you got things up and running after your flooding issues are done and handled.

Notice: This thread is not going to turn into a series of posts of "I love the site - I want access" followed by "me too" and "me three"... "me four".

I'm sure Don knows how popular his site is, but there is no reason to turn this thread into a signup sheet for a site that is not currently taking on members. That's not what this thread is for - and all posts of that nature will be removed.

Hey man, I have used your site in the past for a few ringers and I just got a new phone and Sprint couldn't transfer anything from my old phone so I was visiting the site again. I noticed the new registration and said DOH! So I am back at Sprintusers.com looking for some link and things have changed...

Anyway, I noticed your need for assistance (or at least the abundance of reg requests and mention of it here, though I admit I didn't read all 41 pages of this thread) and wanted to offer my services. I know you don't know me from Adam, but here is what I may be able to do. I have some reseller hosting accounts and I could host some ringers or images whatever you might need for you. I don't know that I could host it all for you (this would depend on total size/throughput), but if I were to host some of it and you could link off to it (I can even purchase a domain for it or setup a folder on one of my many sites) and that could potentially save you some cost. I don't know how you would feel about splitting up parts of it, but it might help lower the load on the CPU.

I don't have a dedicated server, but I would love to help out if I can. I will ponder the cost/donation issue and if I can think of a good way to assist I will contact you (and I completely understand not wanting to be sued!)

If you think I might be able to help you, PM me as I would like to get some idea of what kind of throughput you have monthly and space required for what you have before I can totally commit. I work for an ISP so I understand all the lingo, so don't feel like you will talk to technical. If you wanted to chat a little I would certainly be game for that as well.

For all the sad people. I am working on an uploader that is very similar to dbringers. Its a project that I adopted from www.rumkin.com which I have added lots of enhancements. I am looking for a server to host it on b/c I dont want to host it from my local machine. those of you who would like to check it out can goto www.chrisontheweb.net/cellphones/ you can also access it via you phone at www.chrisontheweb.net/wap/ There are still a lot of bugs that need to be worked out and if anyone would be willing to help out let me know. enjoy!!

Also a question for the guy who created dbringers. Where did you get the uploader or did you create it youself? If so could I get the source code so that I can make the one that I have even better. It looked alot like the rumkin uploader in some ways.

i've been getting tons of questions about hosting, my code, content, and weather i would reconsider bringing the site back (which i am not). i will try to get back to everyone soon. just been really busy lately and haven't really been on the computer much at all lately. i plan on either repling directly or doing like a wrap-up FAQ here to address everyone's questions.
Again, thanks everyone

Is the content off of DBRINGERS going to be passed on to anyone or is all lost?

I am closing this thread since there is no need for it to remain open. If Don ever passes his stuff along or opens another site, I am 110% sure he will make a thread here to let us know. If he doesn't, I will hunt him down personally. :p

SprintUsers.com was created in January 2002 as a resource for users of Sprint PCS products and services to learn about and share information. We have cll phone reviews, Cellular Accessories, Downloads, PDA reviews, Ringtones, all of the latest Sprint PCS news and information, an area where you can find help in creating a ring tone or custom image for you phone, and so much more. The most popular section is the message board where visitors can read and write messages, ask questions, and get advice about their cellular phone from other users.
