me and my hosting company cannot figure this out. i'm almost wondering is Sprint's gateway is blocking my site's IP address (maybe they think its spam, i dunno). Anyone know of a way to look into this more? the site is accessable via PC, but not via the phone. does anyone have friends with NON-sprint phones; maybe they can try reaching the site from thier phones too. that way i can see if its a phone thing in general or a sprint specific thing.
thanks in advance to anyone who can help

but i don't see why they would single out my site. there's tons of others out there. plus sprint isn't normally in the habit of filtering (requardless of what some other paranoid posts might suggest), so it still doesn't make much sense...... anyone got any ideas, suggestions???

Well if you think about dude sprint is not making any money off there over price garbage ringtones as long as they know people are downloading from you and louie. On the other hand i think sprint got better things to do than filter out your site. Did you contact your server host to see whats wrong?

Matt
03-18-2006, 04:36 PM
It's clearly not the server if Verizon, T-Mobile, and Cingular can access it.

I got on the site from the pc just fine so i went to send a ringer to my phone via text message i went to the text with the url in it the text linking to the ringer so i clicked on it and it appeared to be working until that error message came up not letting me download the ringer. Well i guess sprint is hating on you. Ever thought moving the site with a different name you know try to hide it from sprint just in case they really are hating on you.

as most of you have all realized, it is indeed working now. long story short; it just turned out that the firewall on the server my site is hosted on added the Sprint's Gateway IP to its block list (probably because all sprint cell phone traffic comes from that Gateway's IP, it probably looked like a DOS issue to the firewall software). Anyhow, my host unblocked the IP range and now all is well.

Donblay, I again have to commend you for your work on this ringer site. I haven't been on the site for probably a month, and just went on again today to see if it was up. I don't know how you do it, but you keep on top of all the new hot songs out there, helping me make my phone hella trendy. People are always wondering how the heck I already have a new song as my ringer.

And I have to say that my friend has Cingular and we cannot find a single site that offers the depth of ringers you do for free. So too bad for him and yay for us!

And btw, great search implimentation! Awesome addition to the site.

Rock on man and keep doing the good work. :music:

Awe, gee shucks, you guys are too kind, lol. Seriously though, thanks! :) It really makes it worth while when I hear praise like that.
I try to stay current, its hard to keep up to date; but its at least current enough to keep your phone pimped out and friends impressed...lol. I probably will do a batch today maybe.
I got so many ideas I want to do for the site, just hard to find time to keep up with it all. Like the search for instance. I wanted to do for months before I actually got around to doing it. But it works pretty smoothly and intuitively though . I got some more ideas and improvements in mind i hope to do soon.
Thanks again guys, I appreciate the good word!

sure, after i read these awesome comments i was feeling really good about this site. then i get home just to find an email from some guy claiming that he got charged $22.46 from me. whatever! i won't let it get to me too much. but as I'm sure Luie will agree, its awesome fun to do these sites, but every now and then someone makes it a pain.

as a rule, no i don't accept requests; normally i recommend people to our good friend Luie here for that. but in this case i might just because i do want some more latin ringers but don't know anything current. can you name a few latin songs that would be popular now?

actually they always have been M4A's or QCP. I've never had MP3's on the site. but you are right that you can't right-click on them to save them to the PC. thats not my intent, and i'll probably fix it again later so you can save the files to the comptuer. its jsut lots of people were saying they couldn't preview the M4A's before, so i changed the link to automatcially open the files in Quicktime. the side effect of that is that they can't be downloaded. i'll probably make a download option over the weekend.

Made some fixes today. fixed the most popular downloads for the week feature. it used to work until i broke it last week, but its good again. limited the number of screen savers shown on a page. gave the option to view uncensored image results on newest screen savers. and made the most popular screen saver feature for pictures, just waiting for more downloads so it useable before i show it.

but in the near future there i will be changing the site to a free memebership site, because i need to limit my bandwidth use and limit my public exposer on the net (the very same reason louie decided to shut down)

Quick question ... I had some ringers sent to my phone in the past (a month or two ago) without a problem. The other day I called Sprint because I was getting charged for text messages that I wasn't sending or receiving. They asked if I wanted to have them blocked and I said to do so. Last night I went to have a ringer sent to my Blade and got nothing. Tried several other songs and still nothing. My plan says I have Power Vision and I can easily connect to the internet. I even went and tried entering in the URL for the ringer and got an error 404 message that the page could not be found although I checked the URL to make sure it was right. Could this have anything to do with having my text messages blocked? Just curious.
By the way, the site is great and I've been putting my own ringtones together ... would like to put them up as well.

laursifer
03-30-2006, 08:54 AM
I don't think that should effect the issue. They basically have ALL text messages blocked for you, but that shouldn't stop you from being able to download them using the URL. I would suggest trying Rumkin:

http://rumkin.com/tools/sprint/index.php

You don't need to enter a phone number, so you can send the phone then go to http://rumkin.com/tools/sprint/jump.php on your phone (I have it bookmarked); Rumkin will give you a 6-digit jump code to enter, which will take you straight to your download. Give that a shot & see if it works.

Rickster1
03-30-2006, 09:12 AM
Sorry ... I'm not too sharp today. I'm at the screen to enter a Jump Code ... where do I find the jump code for the song I want to download?

laursifer
03-30-2006, 09:24 AM
When you upload the file using Rumkin, it gives you a jump code to grab that file.

I am going to edit Don's first post in this thread to reflect this as well so there are no excuses. There is a RINGTONE REQUEST thread smack at the top of this forum for making requests.

It kind of sucked. I left early because of the %$#^! I'd taken with me. I stayed out of the front row this time and stood in the back so I could see the sequence on the curtain and the whole stage setup; you can't see that stuff from the front row, but you can of course see every muscle in Trent's body :p It was so beautiful, so I'm glad I decided to do that. Bought tickets this week to two shows this summer, and another show goes on sale next week that I'm going to. Hehehe.

I did get to see sound check, though, which was unbelievable. Trent was pretty talkative, and while they were playing Saul Williams and his DJ came and stood right next to me. I kind of did a double-take, and Saul reached out to shake my hand. Pretty cool. I am really impressed with that guy.

Damn whats with all the tension? I notice every since louie shut down alot of people been pretty much on edge over it. I know people are entitled to there opinion but there is a way of saying it without showing disrespect. But don keep it real your site is cool and got nice tones and savers but you are a bit slow at updating it.

ok, people tend to forget he's got a life he is living. it's not his job to put new content up as soon as it comes out, like it is sprint's or any other carrier for that matter.

Thank you, and you are right! It boils down to that; I do have a life!! I don't have much free time, and I don't "owe" anyone any ringers, new or old!! I can't always keep up on who has some new hip-hop song out there that you just GOTTA have on your phone to impress your peeps! I don't need to do this for anyone! you would think people would be gratefull for anything they could get for free!! but no, some think that we all must bow to them. If you don't like my site, then don't use my site! its as simple as that! calling me names and insulting me doesn't motivate me, and only makes you look like an azz!! go pay sprint or any of those other sites and complain to them. i don't need this crap, i owe no one anything!

sorry, hookedonitunes, i didn't mean to make that sound like i was taking it out on you, i just really had to vent. i wanna thank you though for standing up for me. its that kind of respect and good attitude that made me wanna do something like this in the first place, thanks again

Sorry, diamond. I don't think Don has anything for the 6700. Louie might still have some stuff, but his selection is limited now. You could always request things in the ringtone supply & demand thread, but note that Louie is stuck in the demands of personal issues now so it could take a few days.

are the download specifications different for the 6700? Does it not download in the normal Sprint GCD method? at this point i don't know anything about it, but if anyone knows any of the technical details i can look into it.

I don't think it works the same because the 6700 uses an actual web browser, pretty much. The best I can tell you is to check out this thread:

http://www.sprintusers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=94947

Won't tell you much. Louie had a page for it but he took it down, but he could probably give you some info to get you started if you PM him or something.

You can't. It's impossible to make your own and use them. They run directly off of Sprint's network, not off your phone like a ringtone. So no freebies outta that one...

Hey Guys,

Don has helped alot of us out. Both my wife and I have been lucky enough to use his services in the past. He is a full time professional doing this on his own and not for the green, just for the sake of helping out. LAY THE HECK OFF HIM! Just like alot out there I make all my own now and after a little work and building of skills I have become pretty good at making anything. So take some time and learn a new skill. You might even impress yourself in doing so. DON Man, Thank You! Some of us do appreciate what you are doing!
This is an offer for you Don. if you get bogged down and want some help just forward some requests over and I'll help out in my spare time and send them over. I do mostly AAC/MP4 some Wav. As you have helped others, maybe let some help you. :music:

**HOPS ON TOP OF SOAP BOX** I know..nobody pulled my chain. HOWEVER, I HAVE contributed donations to Don's site multiple times. I do undoubtely enjoy and appreciate his site, as many others do. I DO make my own ringtones when I don't have the convenience of downloading them off of Don's or Louie's old site. *Insert PROPS for both at this point*. Or **********. I DO NOT have the time to respond to requests. As stated before, we have a COMPLETELY SEPARATE THREAD for requests. Also, there are PLENTY of instructions available on MULTIPLE websites around the net for making YOUR OWN RINGTONES. The software required to make the ringtones, is none the less FREE (for the most part..depends on which way you decide to go with). I am one that DOES think Don needs to be stood up for, being that he's done A LOT to his site and the people of this forum, as well as others. He's provided many many people with FREE RINGTONES, FREE UPLOADER ACCESS, FREE SCREENSAVERS. Can't blame the man for NOT TAKING REQUESTS. He's got a life. Just like you and I. Don's a big boy, he can stand up for himself but when you see someone that does a wonderful thing for other people, without having any instructions to do so, you stand with them in the crowd and help fight their battles. IF you are going to complain, please refrain. Instead, take the time to educate yourself. If you need assistance, we are all here. Even people like myself that don't post very often can help. Ask for it in the threads. If you find that you can make ringtones yourself, maybe you can help contribute to Don's site and be one of the many that helps others around here. This forum is for the education of the uneducated. For the aid of others for the good of the forum. Alright....I think I'm done now. **HOPS OFF SOAP BOX AND TURNS RANT SIGN OFF**

Ok.. I have a 6700. I've used ringers from dbringers on it since day 1.
Easy method:
1) go to site ( I use my desktop PC)
2) navigate to m4a ringers
3) find ringer you want
4) download file
5) copy to phone
6) set as ringtone.

Not hard. I haven't tried to do it on the phone itself yet, and when I went the site now requires username and password.. :-(
Oh well...guess I shouldn't be so lazy as to create my own.

Ok, this thread has been crazy lately and there’s been quite a bit of buzz about recent things with my site. So I hope to wrap it all up here.
The most noticable thing: YES DBRingers is now a private club. What’s this mean? Well now to access the site from now on you will need a user name an password. Now before people start jumping the gun saying I’ve sold out and what not (sad that I actually have to defend myself for something I do as a hobby) the site is still absolutely FREE to members. That’s why I like to refer to it as a private club rather than a membership site; you don’t pay for membership, but you must be accepted into the club. So how does one get a membership? You apply with the online form; fill it out and I will review your application when I can and approve or deny you. Only if you are approved will you receive a confirmation email, if denied then no email. How is it decided who gets approved and who doesn’t? I decide that when I review your application; it is up to me who I allow. Though some have grown to think of my site as a public service and take it for granted they can get free ringers and such; it still is very much MY site. Why is it now a private club?? Many reasons. One being the same reason Louie shut down his site; limit public exposure. I have to protect myself on this; and I’ll leave it at that. The other reason is that this site was initially a proof of concept and was meant to be just for friends. Meaning that once I learned how to make ringers I wanted to share them with my friends (meaning people I actually know in person). So I wanted to see if I could actually make them downloadable to my friends from my personal web site. Once I tough myself PHP and such and started creating the site it seemed cool to share it out to other people too; mainly SprintUsers.com members. Well the site too off more than I ever could have imagined and now has become huge. So huge that I really have trouble keeping the site going. I now currently pay out of my pocket for hosting for this site. But I am always going over bandwidth; and more recent issue of using up too much of the server’s recourses. Even though I pay for server hosting it’s a shared server; meaning that other customers of my hosting company have their web sites on it too. And my site is so busy that it starts taking away processing power from those other customer. Obviously they cannot allow for that. I cannot afford a dedicated server; the fees are way too much. So instead of loosing everything I’m taking the site back to roots; a site for me and friends. Granted it’s more than just my close personal friends now, but still people that I approve of. Sorry, but this is the way it has to be.

I do have, and will keep the public uploads gallery for images. At some point i will have a public uploads gallery for ringers as well (but i have no estimated time for that). Like the images is now, it will be a seperate gallery just for public uploads; and not mixed in with the rest of my content.

I don't think it's too greedy of you to accept bribes for membership. ;)

As an honorary gay, I got some bribes for Don ;) ;) Too bad he's taken.

Don, question... Let's say someone wanted to donate content to you. I know there are people who would be willing to donate ringtones, and I would be more than willing to donate wallpapers. How would you prefer we go about doing that?

Since Louie is struggling right now with personal things, I believe, and is unable to spend as much time here... I was thinking of dumping even more onto my plate and fulfilling some ringtone requests. If that happens (meaning, if I don't plunge into a bottomless pit of endless work weeks again) I could send those your way as well.

I know it's been said before, but I'll say it again. Don is perfectly within his rights to make his site private, and I for one really appreciate what he's done for the sprint user community. His content is great, and is always freshly updated.

I've submitted my app, and can only hope to be approved. :fingers:

I wanna thank everyone for there offers to donate. it is greatly needed with some of the changes going on with the site (the dual server thing..ugh).
I will put up the paypal link on the login page, that way non-members or those not approved yet can donate if they'd like too. just a note though, a donation is just that, a donation. it is not payment for membership nor does it guarantee approval of your membership. i need to make that clear, this is NOT a pay site.

As for donations of screen savers and ringers, I’m also very grateful for that. Just be warned I’m very picky about the quality of the things I post, so if you send me something don’t take it personal if I don’t use it (though I know laursifer always does awesome graphics).I’m not sure the best way to get this stuff sent to me, I guess plain old email would work best. I will probably create an email account just for this and post it very soon.
Thanks all 

...Just when you think you're one of only a few people who know about a secret as great as the DB site, you hear that there are over 2700 people waiting to be "approved" for membership. Guess the "best kept secret" is no secret after all !!!!

Just out of curiosity, and mostly because in my busy schedule, I don't have nearly as much time to devote to my hobbies as I'd like to (I'm now a new grandpa), but I'm a little interested to know what drove Don to go to a membership based system? Granted I think that's a wonderful idea as it allows a little more control over things... but were there some negatives that fed into the decision? (In other words, are there any people who need to meet some uh friends? heheheh) nah just kidding of course, I know it's all in fun. You do a superb job of keeping it all together, I just wish I had the gumption that you do... As I recall, this takes a considerable amount of your time as well... Thank you (and I'm sure I speak for us all..) for DBRingers... It's a wonderful site.

Also, if I may inquire - Are there any specific criteria that would prohibit or keep someone from being "approved?" or is it just a census type issue to keep track of the visitors and such..? Are there any plans to go to a pay site in the future?

Again, keep up the great work !!!

Well, back quite a few pages, DonBlay explained that he originally started the site for HIS friends and family. When word spread about his site, people started to use/abuse his bandwith, which in turn defeated the purpose the site was originally intended for. Also, he is paying most, if not all of the server costs out of pocket. Since he saw that people were taking advantage of his site, without a simple thank you, and also accussing him of selling peoples information, he decided to make it more exclusive...so he doesn't have to deal with morons.

p.s.
Thanks for the approval DB, direct me on how to help you out with costs!

04-16-2006, 10:51 AM
yeah, as bmxfro mentioned, the site was doing too much traffice (both bandwidth and server use) and it would cost me way to much for a dedicated server. i already spend way to much money on this site and can't really afford any more. also like he said, people accusing me of all kinds of things, spaming, sending daily horoscopes, and lately lots of people blaming me for charges on thier bills (when in reality they just didn't have Vison on thier plans and got charge by sprint for internet use, but of course thats my falt). so basically its to limit use, limit my internet exposer, and hopfully limit my headaches
as far as what gets you accepted. its totally up to me. there's several things i look for in an application to see if i think the person should be allowe, but if i stated what they were i know tons of people would send in their applications with just what i wanted to hear so they could get in.

Point taken DB.. and I can see where you'r coming from.
Might I make a suggestion tho' - There may (probably are) a few users like me, who don't really care to soak up bandwidth, and just want a cool decent place to go to stock up their phones with ringtones and backgrounds. For the few users who might fall into this category, would you possibly be considering a part time thing or otherwise limit the access without eliminating it completely?

Better yet, I think you should contact someone at Sprint, and have them sponsor you.
Yea - That's a great idea !!!! I think ALL the users on here would back you on that request.. You are a definite provider to the SPRINT community.

Thanks, and keep up the great work!!!

I'm moving the screen savers section onto a new server (part of the problem of why i'm limitiing access, the load on the servers is too much with all this traffic). this should take some of the burden off the servers. but its not done yet, i hope to have it back up soon, but no estimate at this time

1st off, yes, i'm still going through applications, its been an endless stream. be patient please.

2nd, what i really wanted to do was ask memebers to test out my new video section. i don't have many videos available yet because its still in testing, but i'd like some help. i've tested the vids with a sanyo 9000 and a sanyo 7400 and they seem to work fine. can members with other phone types try (of course your phone must be able to take videos to play them). They're in 3gp (and 3g2) format, so it should be pretty much univeral for any video-capable phone (unlike mp4 files, not as well supported). i'm working on a method to thumbnail the videos, but for now i wanna make sure the fundimental dowloading and use part works.
Thanks to all who can help.
d

Wow - I just realized my a900 had a video's section in the "My Contents" area!
Love it! I just tried out the "don't worry, be happy" and my fav. type "cowboy", and they work very well on my phone! I haven't tried anything but viewing them yet - anything in particular you want me to try?

I love the video section! Great job as usual !

Oh, sorry, its not available from the WAP version just yet. I had a bug that I didn't have time to fix. It will be WAP accessable pretty soon though, just not yet.

cool. yeah, it adds the Video section to your My Content area when you first download your 1st video (i could have called the folder anything, but figured that "video" made sense). If you delete everything from the video folder it disappears on its own too.
and yeah, i figured you'd like the cowboy video too ;) Its one of my favs as well :p lol

Screensavers? you mean like a standby animation (after not doing anything for a few secs) or you mean on the 900 you can actually set video as the wallpaper??

I'll see if I can check out any of the vids. If they are small, cause we all know my phone doesn't take but 10kb movies HAHAHA. Good work the site Don!

So I created a email address for people to send stuff to. its dbcontent [at] gmail [dot] com.
Anything people wanna send will be appreciated. But don't be offended if I don't use something you send (not you personal laursifer :) just anyone in general).
But some rules of thumb for content i use:
Screen Savers should be at least 240 x 320 and good quality. Its best if they are resized to 240x320, but they should be at least that to avoid distortion.
AAC ringers should be under 30 seconds, 32kbps (data rate), and mono.
Video clips (yup, i do video now) should be some format that quicktime can handle.

Thanks again all! :)

Check your email and let me know if my stuff is helpful at all? I've been wanting to send you something for a while, but wasn't sure if it would be any good! Thanks!
