Is this still T-Mobile's plan for the end of next month?

http://www.t-mobile.com/company/about/default.asp

2.5G GPRS High Speed Wireless Data

T-Mobile offers a variety of integrated voice and GPRS Wi-Fi data capable devices, allowing customers to remotely access the Internet; get their corporate and personal e-mail; keep contacts and calendar information updated on the go; and get popular games, news and information services such as sports scores, stock quotes, horoscopes and games delivered automatically or on demand to their wireless handset or device. By the end of September 2005, T-Mobile plans to launch EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for Global Evolution) service across its nationwide network, offering average data speeds between 100-130 kbps – up to three times faster than traditional wired dial-up services.

I know Sprint can offer their customers a larger covererage area via analog & digital roaming agreements, but isn't their native network similar in size to T-Mobile's?

If T-Mobile can sell an aircard and setup more data roaming agreements for a small monthly fee, they can be seen as a lower priced alternative to those seeking mobile data service.

It's already in several regions now. I have an EDGE phone and EDGE is in the Portland/Vancouver area.

I read T-Mobile won't be able to lanch 3G services for another three years.
They don't have enough money, spectrum, or licenses to launch anything more then what they have at this time.

That's funny considering that T-Mobile already has EDGE in 70% of it's markets.

No, Sprint's native network is larger then T-Mobile's. Some of T-Mobile's coverage map is roaming onto smaller, rural carriers network. Google has all kinds of articles on the fact that Sprint has more towers then T-Mobile.

Oh and from phonescoop.

I realize that EDGE is actually 2.75G, but you get the idea.

EDGE Launch Imminent On T-Mobile

Today, 12:26 PM source: T-Mobile

T-Mobile USA has updated a page on their website revealing details about their EDGE network. T-Mobile now claims they will launch EDGE data network-wide by the end of September. EDGE, often referred to as 2.5G, is a GPRS-based data network that is up to 4 times faster than original GPRS. The carrier began selling EDGE-capable handsets earlier this year, and confirmed they expected to upgrade their networks by 2006. T-Mobile is also rolling out additional network-wide upgrades, including the use of handsets' built in voicemail notification icons instead of the text message they used to send.

That's funny how every article I have read on T-Mobile states that they are not able to launch 3G service for years to come. What ever network T-Mobile is using now, is still years always from Sprint, Verizon and Cingular. That is why rumors are going around the Internet that T-mobile International is going to drop T-Mobile USA, because they can't spend that kind of money, and would rather focus on Europe. So I guess in a few years you might be using VodaFone USA.

T-Mobile USA has Revenue of 9.37B. That is FAR less then everyone else. Where is T-Mobile USA going to get this money?

Deutsche Telekom not interested in selling T-Mobile USA. - report
07.05.2005, 04:25 AM

FRANKFURT (AFX) - Deutsche Telekom AG has no intention of selling its US mobile phones unit T-Mobile USA, German daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung reported, citing unnamed sources close to the management and supervisory boards.

The reports were 'purely fictitious' and were invented by financial investors in the US, the sources told the newspaper.

Deutsche Telekom's supervisory board did not recently discuss the sale of the US unit, the sources added.

The Wall Street Journal Europe reported earlier, citing unnamed sources, that the telecoms giant's management board has been discussing the divestment of T-Mobile USA and that a sale could value the mobile phone business at an estimated 25-30 bln usd.

So I guess all these people who are already using EDGE via native T-Mobile towers (myself included) are either stupid or lying?

I read that article before, along with every other one on this matter. No company will go into detail until they are ready to do so. Sprint and Nextel did not say anyhting about their merger until they announced it. We will just have to wait and see.

Me personally I don't care for T-Mobile USA. But it seems like the carrier you are using would benefit more from VodaFone, opposed to T-Mobile International.

There is no T-Mobile International. It's Deutsche Telekom. Either way, this thread is not about the sell of T-Mobile USA. It's about EDGE rollout.

Lets try to stay on topic.

You said it yourself EDGE is not 3G. What I said still stands. I will still stay with Sprint Nextel and use their advanced services. You like what you like, I like what I like.

T-Mobile USA offers EDGE across 90% of GRPS network

By Dan Meyer
Sep 1, 2005

T-Mobile USA Inc. said it has launched EDGE services across 90 percent of its GPRS-enabled network and that the higher-speed wireless data service now is commercially available to customers with EDGE-enabled devices. The carrier was expected to launch EDGE earlier this year, but delayed the service due to a lack of compelling devices.
T-Mobile USA currently offers a pair of EDGE-enabled handsets from Motorola Inc. and Nokia Corp. A company spokesman said customers can continue to access the EDGE services for the same price as their current GRPS rate plans, but that the carrier would begin looking at possible EDGE-specific pricing plans sometime in the future.

Cingular Wireless L.L.C. currently offers EDGE services across most of its network and plans to offer higher-speed UMTS/HSDPA services in at least 15 markets by the end of the year. T-Mobile USA's parent company Deutsche Telekom AG said it was waiting on additional spectrum before announcing additional network upgrades.

DT also announced that its T-Mobile International operations signed Wi-Fi roaming agreements with Swisscom Mobile and Telecom Italia covering 1,000 hot-spot locations in Switzerland and 800 locations in Italy. The agreement is available to T-Mobile wireless customers in Austria, The Czech Republic, Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

DT noted it was the leading transatlantic Wi-Fi provider with more than 13,000 locations in Europe and the United States, and it offers Wi-Fi at more than 35,000 locations around the world through roaming agreements.
