They can be used for either carrier? so why does each company have different phones for their lines? and where can i find out more about their phones? I'd be willing to switch carriers if either of them has a phone i like.

1) they have to be carrier unlocked. if not, popping a t-mob SIM into a cingular phone will not work unless you have the unlock code for that phone

2) t-mobile is primarily 1900 while cingular uses primarily 850. some t-mobile phones don't have the 850 band on them so using them on cingular would be tough
