Have WAP but want WEB? Introducing Opera Mini™ for mobile phones
Oslo, Norway - August 10, 2005
Opera Software, world leader in cross-platform browser technologies, today introduced Opera Mini™, a J2ME (Java 2 Mobile Edition) Web browser for virtually all mobile phones. Opera Mini™ enables Web access on more than 700 million low- and mid-tier Java-capable phones around the world, finally bringing mobile Internet into the mainstream.
Opera Mini™ is a fast and easy alternative to Opera's mobile browser, allowing users to access the Web on mobile phones that would normally be incapable of running a Web browser. This includes the vast majority of today's WAP-enabled phones. Instead of requiring the phone to process Web pages, it uses a remote server to pre-process the page before sending it to the phone.
"Mobile Web surfing has until now been limited to more advanced phones that are capable of running a browser," says Jon S. von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera Software. "With Opera Mini™, the phone only has to run a small Java-client and the rest is taken care of by the remotely located Opera Mini server. With Opera Mini™ you don't have to have an advanced phone to surf the Web, which means that most people can use it with their existing phones."
Installing Opera Mini™ is as easy as installing a ringtone. Users simply send an SMS or visit a link through their WAP browser to receive it, and they are online in an instant.
Because Opera Mini™ enables Web access on low- and mid-tier phones, operators can now dramatically increase the average revenue per user (ARPU) across their entire customer base by stimulating the usage of compelling mobile Web services. Opera offers full customization of Opera Mini™ to companies, for example operators, broadcasters, mobile content providers and the Internet industry, that would like to include their own version of Opera Mini™ as part of their mobile content offerings.
The first company to take advantage of Opera Mini™ is Norway's leading commercial television station, TV2. It has bundled Opera Mini™ with its mobile services in Norway to offer its viewers a complete mobile content package that includes a branded and advanced Web browser.
"Finally we see how we can generate revenue from real mobile browsing," says Morten Holst, VP Strategy, TV2 Interactive. "By introducing TV2's portal through Opera Mini™ we have combined the best of mobile services with mobile Web access."
Availability
Opera Mini™ is available to end-users through operators and companies that choose to include it in their offerings to their customers. It is currently available as a pilot project through TV2 in Norway, with wider availability to be announced.

Opera Announces Browser for Mobile Phones
Aug 10, 9:09 AM (ET)
OSLO, Norway (AP) - Opera Software ASA on Wednesday announced a new version of its Internet browser that allows Web surfing from almost any mobile phone, even inexpensive ones with little built-in memory.
Accessing the Internet has largely been restricted to higher-end mobile phones with the memory capacity to run a browser.
The Oslo-based company said its new Opera Mini browser can allow surfing from 700 million low-to-medium cost phones without space for a traditional browser.
Opera said the system only requires the phone to have a small Java program because instead of the phone itself processing a Web-page, a remote server preprocesses the page before sending it to the phone.
"With Opera Mini you don't have to have an advanced phone to surf the Web, which means that most people can use it with their existing phones," said Opera co-founder and chief executive Jon S. von Tetzchner.
Opera Mini is currently a pilot project, with the software offered through the Norwegian commercial television network TV-2, but broader distribution is also planned, a news release said.
TV-2 bundled Opera Mini into its Norwegian mobile phone services to offer viewers a complete content package that includes the browser, the statement said.
"Finally, we see how we can generate revenue from real mobile browsing," said Morten Holst, a vice president for TV2 Interactive. "By introducing TV2's portal through Opera Mini, we have combined ... mobile services with mobile Web access."
Opera's shares rose more than 7 percent to 15.10 kroner ($2.37) on the Oslo stock exchange following the announcement.
Opera's browser has won praise as being fast and compact, and has been gaining ground in mobile phones and personal digital assistants.
The company, which employs about 200 people, was founded in 1995 by two former developers for the Norwegian telecommunications group Telenor as an offshoot of a company project.

So how can we get it? :irked:
Here is what I found on Operas web site:
Installing Opera Mini
Opera Mini is offered to operators and mobile content providers worldwide, and not as a download from opera.com.
Opera Mini is available in Norway through TV2, and may be downloaded for free by sending an SMS with "Opera" to 1984. This will only work in Norway.
You should be sent a text message in response (this may take up to one hour). Some phones will also receive a bookmark. Open the bookmark, and if your phone is able to run Opera Mini, you should be offered a link to download it.
If your phone does not support bookmarks you can use the link provided in the text message. Either click the link, or open the address in your phone's Internet browser (WAP).
Follow the instructions to download and install Opera Mini. You will be sent a configuration message that should set up your phone to connect to the Internet.
Once Opera Mini is installed, you may be offered the option to open it. If you are not offered this option, you will need to locate it using your phone's menu system.
Your phone may display a message telling you to ensure you have set up an Internet connection or GPRS access point before using Opera Mini. If you have not yet set up a connection, you should do so now.

No luck yet getting it on my MM-7400.
I've tried pointing the phone to http://mini.opera.com/tv2/ and http://wap.opera.com/ but I can only get so far. If I can get ahold of the .jad and .jar files, I'll let y'all know!

According to the Opera website, their mini browser uses a portal to reformat pages, and it's likely that the portal only accepts traffic from users in Norway right now. I'm guessing that's why we aren't able to get beyond the first page.

Like most other people, I got the first page to work (in my case, google.com). From what I've read on other forums, this browser does work in the US, but there must be something about Sprint that's stopping it from loading more than the first page you visit.

I was able to get Opera Mini to go to a couple of Web pages, but...
1) It displays the VM4050's 35KB bug just as WebViewer does. PocketWeb supposedly would not, because it reads pages in 5KB chunks, but I could not get PocketWeb to work on my phone at all.
2) I cannot successfully bring up the Menu ("Meny") and so I cannot switch Opera Mini to English!

PS its in another language also... didn't figure out how to change it just yet. (again its different from the others I've downloaded)
EDIT: ok found out how to change to English. Hit Left soft key for a "menu" (the menu is empty on my screen, guess cuz phone doesn't have that type language font) scroll down to the line with the right arrow, then hit over, then down one line and hit OK. Scroll to the bottom where it says "novsk" (I think it was) then change to English - ok then hit left soft key again.
Also Opera isn't working for me...it seems to only open things in its cache I guess. Nothing I type in... it all goes to the same pages (couldn't tell that before, lol it was all in forgein language)
In Opera Mini the help section says "to start your handset need a GPRS/3G profile"
Do we have a 3G profile on our Sprint phones?

Hey I have a question for you about your signature "$35/mo: 540aT, UL NW 8pm, UL Vision, UL PictureMail, UL VideoMail, UL SMS, UL P2P. Member since 1998"
what is P2P?
When I hit Vision / My Account / My Plan:
I see Sprint F&F plan / Adjustable anytime minutes/$34.99 blah... / <AMERICA> / <P2P>
What is the P2P and doesn't that <AMERICA> thing mean roaming included or is that just national sprint network only?

I think I know why the browser only allows one page view. We have unregistered copies of it. I must say im impressed with the opera minis UI it looks better than the austere interface of webviewer or pocketweb although it lags behind pocket web in terms of functionality.

Well, I've offically stop messing with Opera and I've offically a licensed user of PocketWeb for the next 12 months. It actually works. I'm not sure if it's better than the Webviewer people were able to get while they were selling it, but this has worked for me on my 7400 without any flaws (so far.) And the app is smaller in size. Nice settings menu also lets you customize the browser settings.
Maybe, I'll check back with Opera later to see if it works any better than it does now. I still can't get it to load more than one page.

Hi
I was "playing around" with the Navigating codes for Opera Mini, Sunday, for awhile. The codes are:
#,1 = Enter URL
#,2 = View bookmarks
#,3 = Go to start of main content, or beginning and end of page
#,4 = Go to start (portal) page
#,5 = History
#,6 = Page information
#,7 = Save bookmark
#,8 = Edit settings
#,9 = Web search
#,0 = Reload
#,# = Navigate forward
*: = Toggle display of toolbars (if available)
Since yesterday, (Monday), whenever I try to use WebViewer or Opera Mini, they seem to be [in a] frozen or locked up state when awaiting a reply?
Other Vision applications all work normally.
I think that maybe I messed something up by entering the above codes, numerous times, and got those two apps locked up, so in your opinion, is there some way to restore the functionallity of these apps, without having to delete/restore them.
Any suggestions, huh?

Gasp! This is exactly what I needed to make Opera Mini genuinely usable. Edit Settings let me change the language to English; and the other three codes above are also essential to efficient Web surfing.
Note that I am using the low-memory (MIDP1.0) version of Opera Mini, because my Toshiba VM4050 does not support MIDP2.0. Note also that I still slam into the evil 35KB limitation.

I dunno how to explain it. I deleted the hi version (I'll also note, just in case, that PocketWeb wasn't installed anymore either, since I had next-to-zero luck with that), installed the low version of Opera and it works great. Still does, too. I've used it a lot since this afternoon, making sure it continues to work and isn't just teasing me. As much as I love a tease, I'm not too keen on it coming from my phone.
So, kid with the 8300, maybe you should try the low version if you haven't already. If you read the entire thread, you can see that it seems hit or miss for some reason. Don't assume people are lying just because something doesn't work for you. Believe it or not, when people say it loads more than just one page, most of the time they aren't just saying it for the heck of it; we actually mean it. Shocking, I know.

I'd love to know why mine keeps loading the same page. I installed Opera, went to SU and it loaded fine. I couldn't click on anything, without the same page loading again. I uninstalled and reinstalled it; tried to go to www.google.com and it loaded SU again. I waited about 5-10 minutes and tried www.abc.com and it loaded it fine. I tried to go to Google or SU and it reloaded ABC.com again. I tried it about 3 more times, still getting ABC.com.

I think everyone, knows which version you're referring to, but that's not the problem. It's not working for anyone else. Well, maybe it works for a selected few. But if your phone has 10MB of memory available after using 10 MB of memory, that's a lot of memory. The 7400 only has like 2.8MB of memory available total.
However, someone posted that they got it to work on their 7400, so that throws the memory requirement out the window.
So, who actually are you calling slow?

I'm using the low memory version on my mm7400. It now seems to work, it wasn't working yesterday. Interestingly Pocketweb is only loading text now maybe its the servers on their end. But..... I don't think so. My-casts radar is not working properly and I keep getting logged off of sprintusers. It could be just a coincidence but i think they are some how related although i am at loss to explain how.
Regarding the Pocketweb only loading text. There is an option thru the menu if you go to settings, then select images, there is an option to select if you want to Auto Load the images, restrict non important images (like ads), etc. The app allow you to customize it. It loads the page faster when there are less images, but if you don't mind waiting for the whole page to load, turn on the Auto Load Imgs option and set restrictions to None.

Exactly. That's why I said I thought it was hit or miss. Because we've got an instance where one 8300 user can run it fine while another 8300 user cannot; and now we have an instance of two 535 users who can run it while at least two others cannot (*edit: now three who can and two who still can't, even after trying the low version). I have no idea what causes this, which is why it seems hit or miss--pure luck. I honestly wish there was some way to figure this out; for me it was just going down to the low version.
I agree the memory thing seems to be a good idea in theory, but at least for the 535 users, it's very hard to use just half the internal memory. I don't know how much internal memory the other 535 users have free, but I have a lot downloaded to my phone (40-some wallpapers, 9 ringers, 26 games & 19 applications).
It's hard to say it, but hit or miss seems to be the only explanation that we can come up with so far, given everything we've heard from people who have tried it.
In regards to the slow thing, I was being somewhat sarcastic (probably inappropriately, but whatever) with iblostboy. He's been rude. I don't like rude; it annoys me.

Well, I've freed up 2.1MB on my 7400, and still no luck. I'll go with the "Hit or Miss" theory. With the PocketWeb app, I only had 300Kb of free space and it worked perfectly (even with the auto load image option turned on, with no cache).
I understand everyone may be getting frustrated, but let's stick together and try and help each other out.

PocketWeb gave me the same result (blank white page) that you seem to be getting with certain pages. I could load Google and a couple of other really simple pages, but I tried loading my personal websites, SprintUsers, Slashdot... they all loaded blank. #$*%$! :irked:

I think I've found the culprit. Maybe someone with more computer literacy can explain this more accurately. Phone numbers, text messages, bookmarks all occupy memory.... when the minibrowser is launched the text it contains somehow occupys that same memory space i think; heres why i say this. Yesterday I could not get either version of the opera browser working but after deleting a few unused phone numbers, bookmarks and textmessages i was able to run the high version with no problem.

It still seems to be hit or miss. I only say this because we have 535 users who can run hi and low, some who can only run low and some who can't run either. I think we've had a lot of good theories, but the 535 has so much internal memory that it just seems like that can't have anything to do with it.
Harris's theory was good, but I have 10MB of free space, very few people in my phone book, like only 3 bookmarks... and I clean out text messages all the time (stupid phone only holds 50 anyway). I still can't get the hi version to run, but low works fine. It doesn't make sense.
So, Michelle, if you delete any Opera versions you have installed, delete PocketWeb, and just keep re-installing Opera low (or hi if you're feeling gutsy), maybe one of those times it will work. Who knows. I was going to delete Opera low and try the hi version again, but I'm afraid I'll end up not being able to run either of them ever again.

One thing I have to say I really like is the scrolling. The 535's browser (openwave) gives you two options: block and smooth. Call me crazy, but there isn't much of a difference, if any, between the two. Scrolling is painful. On Opera low, however, scrolling actually is smooth. It scrolls fast and then will slow down some, which actually is pretty nice, 'cause it does scroll pretty darn fast at first. Really liking it. :tu:

Booooo!!! I'm hating because this doesn't work on my 7400. Does anyone have PocketWeb? (an actual licsensed version?) I have it and it's pretty nice. I would like to compare the two.
I can say, the only thing I don't like on the PocketWeb browser is, you can't just hold down to scroll.
But here's some of the options in the settings menu:
Images->Auto-Load Imgs(on/off); Image Colors (2, 16, 64, 256); Restrictions (supress unimportant); cache (5, 10, 20 images)
Font Size: Large or Small
Cookies:Let's you turn on/off or ask
Page Partitioning: Large pages are split into smaller pieces. At the top of the page, you will see links for browsing the page parts. At the bottom, there is a link to the next part. You can customize or turn off page partitioning in the menu
Cache Size: Can be set from 1-5 pages
Forms: Can set to remeber passwords or not
SSL Connections: Can access secure sites. But warns connection between your device and PocketWeb will not secure.

Y...eah. Opera Low, at least, doesn't have any of those settings. That's the only thing that's truly disappointing me by now. Aside from that, I love it.
Here's Opera Low Settings:
Load Images
Higher Image Quality
Jump directly to main text part
Language
However, I've found that... pretty much... Opera doesn't load images, whether you have it set to or not. Setting to higher image quality doesn't really do anything, either. It loads some images, but not many. I've also found that 'Jump directly to main text part' totally screws up the application. I couldn't get it to load any pages with that option selected.
So basically, it has waaaay less settings than PocketWeb and none of them really work. But all in all, they don't bother me. I don't exactly hop on my phone for a graphically-enhanced browsing experience. Today I sat in a dull meeting, browsing newzbin, SU, Sephora (shut up, I'm a girl), GMail & Slashdot; my bosses thought I was checking my work email. Ha. Right.
Basically, I see Opera (Low, at least--can't speak for Opera Hi) as a poorly tested, failure of an application. Seriously. If you read this thread from beginning to end, it truly should not have been released the way it is. But I'm glad it was. Only reason I get on Vision now is to use WAP-only sites. 'Tis all. Opera Low, as much as it sucks, really is a pleasure to use. To be fair, though, it wasn't made for us. It's only been officially released for those Nordic countries. So maybe, when and if America gets its own version, it will function better.

I just decided to give OperaHi another try, because I love the look of it so much better than OperaLow (was looking at the screen shots on opera.com). And, what do you know, it works.
I uploaded with Gtoal, and had it send it to a custom folder that I titled "OperaHi." I did this because I was hoping it would stop it from overwriting the version of OperaLow that I'm running. Well, that didn't work... but OperaHi is working just fine! Browsed to five different pages and so far it's chugging along just fine.
The settings on the Hi version seem to actually work. It does load images, and the Higher Image Quality setting actually works. Also, there's a Smooth Text setting that's not in the Low version.

No, I can't browse the WAP forum. It (SU) will only let you browse that if it sees you are browsing from your phone; the Opera browser effectively removes that from their sight, which is why you can only read the WAP portal introduction as it appears when you read it from your computer.

1) got it fixed, took out those trial apps that I don't use
and rebooted, thus freeing up some memory and finally up
and running lo version on PM-8200,
running parallel (for comparision) with WebViewer now,
but may try the hi version later, huh?
2) FYI - at http://www.foreignword.com there is a free online
translator that you can use to translate text from
norwegian to english.

Download it here (I believe you would need the low version):
http://felipecn.innereyes.com/2005/08/download-opera-mini/
Change to English this way (or by pressing #8 and following the last step):

Anyone else have this issue/find a workaround?
I loaded OperaHi on my 535. Starts fine, loads the first address I out in fine.. but after that.. no matter what link I click or what address I enter, the app goes through the motions of loading a site, but instead only refreshes the current page. There seems to be no way to go to anything beside one site without restarting the app completely.
A long shot I suppose, but what is the version number/size listed for those of you that have managed to get Hi to work. Mine is 1.0.0/108K

don't ***** too much about it being useless, it's not been released in the 'states yet, calm down. why do you think it's not been released yet? it doesn't work properly!
simmer down and wait a while before you go all nutsy over this.

Why don't you try reading the rest of this thread (you can actually start around page 6 or so) and you'll find plenty of information. Including the fact that near everyone had this same problem.

Is there a version of the Opera Browser for the Palm OS? I really want to get it for my Treo 650?

They have it for Windows Mobile... and Symbian phones. You could download the trials to see if they work, I guess.

Hey folks, I found a working version of Opera Mini that works on my MM8300 just perfectly. This is a great browser! I grabbed the .jad and .jar from http://www.**********.com/forums/rpost.pl?b=apps,m=1130311504 and uploaded it at http://www.gtoal.com/pcs/upload.php
The only thing I haven't figured out is when entering an address I can't seem to find any options to switch to symbols or suffixes to enter in .com (Edit: the number one toggles the commonly used special symbols..)
dchec2100

Hmm... what version is this? I'm running the high version where to enter symbols it's the soft "menu" key, then option 4.

It's Opera Mini, Hi-Fi v. 1.0.1520, build 20050823
I get one soft key (the left one) while looking at a URL, It is menu. When I select it I get:
Enter address
Bookmarks
Start Page
Tools
Exit
If I go to "Enter Address" the two soft keys are left: Back and right:Menu . Menu consists of:
1. Previous address
2. Clear
3. Ok
The star button I found toggles between lowercase alpha, uppercase alpha, numbers and then a symbol select page. The 1 button just repeats through the common symbols.
I hope all that makes sense :)

Hmmm... that's strange. The 1 button toggles certain symbols no matter where you're typing (address book, text, Vision, etc.).
I would suggest downloading this version: http://felipecn.innereyes.com/2005/08/download-opera-mini/
I think you would need the low version, but you should have more luck with that one as far as symbols and whatnot. Seems like the one you're currently using might even be more stripped than the low version in that link.

I tried your download link and it just left me with a version that doesn't work with the issues of never correctly loading new pages and so on. Strange but true, the only way i can use this is if I use your download link, set it to english and then download the hi-fi version and overwrite the old lo-fi version. After this the hi-fi version appears to work ok.
I also checked out the version of your download link and it was the same as mine.. I dunno. It's not a final release so I guess wierd bugs are likely to show up...

10-26-2005, 02:10 PM
Yeah. We had, well, about 13 pages of weird bugs. :p
My Opera Mini experience went from hi version not working, trying low and it worked, and then I installed hi over top of low and it worked. We did spend a lot of the time trying to figure out how to set it to English, however--and then a lot of time trying to figure out the cached page problem. Since then, it's been a hit or miss experience for everyone.
The symbol thing you're experiencing is weird, but I guess that could somehow be more your phone than the application... I guess. Doesn't make much sense to me but that doesn't say much. ;)

Yes, I discovered that installing the lo-fi, setting it to english and then installing the hi-fi version over that gave me a working browser, same as you.
After some playing around the asterik (*) button toggles upper alpha, lower alpha, numeric, and symbol entries. When it toggles to the symbol entries I get a window that pops up with all the symobls to select from. It's there, just a bit different then how my phone usually displays different text entries.
13 pages of bugs? More like 16 pages :) I use the Opera browser for my PC and it's the best by far, I can't wait until they fine-tune their minibrowser to a completion.

I don't know which versions are better for which phones but from what I can see the only difference between hi and low is the amount of "skin" applied to the application. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.
Once I got it to work on my phone it seems to be bug free...
Personally I have only been albe to get the hi-fi version to work on my Sanyo MM8300.

I had posted earlier about this. I used the Low version for probably 4 or 5 days before deciding to give the Hi version another try. The differences, basically, are all aesthetics. I love the way Opera Hi looks and I think Opera Low looks pretty crappy. However, there are also minor operatibility differences.
When you're in the Settings section, you only have about 3 choices on the Low version (aside from language settings): Load images, Higher image quality & Jump directly to main text. On the Hi version, you have those plus an additional option to Smooth font. The main difference here being that the Low version doesn't like to load images and none of the settings seem to do anything at all. The Hi version is the complete opposite--images load, higher image quality works & jump to main text works as well (whereas, on the Low version, it wouldn't load a page at all with that option checked).
Also, on the Low version, the Menu was the right soft key (even though the menu itself would still pop up on the left); on the Hi version it's the left soft key and also pops up on the left. You also get the date displayed on the Hi version, which is a missing feature on the Low.
When it comes down to it, the differences are all pretty minor, but you can't deny that the Hi version is so much sexier.

Probably lost in the 16 pages of replies ;)
Ahh thanks. Being that I could not even get the lo-fi version to work correctly I never was able to discover any of that. What you said makes sense. Every feature you mentioned would consume that much more memory.
The hi-fi version is indeed a sleek and sexy layout. I've got a crimson red MM8300 and the Opera mini hi-fi red color scheme compliments the phone damn well. I probably shouldn't decide my phone software by looks alone.. but damnit it looks so nice.
The opera mini is the first phone browser I've used that can parse down just about any page to something useable. I've disabled images as they seem to be more of a distraction with large page headers and such. I can actually pull up my fantasy football page and make sense of the tabular data, albeit a lot of scrolling, and make minor team adjustments. It seems Opera mini is able to display columns as rows which prevents 2 or 3 columns squeezing in on that small screen space. Compare that to other browsers which end up displaying 1 or 2 characters per row in 3 columns side by side.
I think I am quickly growing dependent on this phone browser.. even in it's beta status. It's gotta be because of the sleek design and not my addiction to information-anytime... right? :)

Ok, I KNOW this is a dumb question, but I'm new to all this new fangled techno babble! Is the 650 and EVDO phone? If not will the expected Cobalt Treo be an EVDO phone.
Also, heard from an inside source that Sprint is supposedly going to make all users switch to nextel type phones. Figured this would happen, but not for a while. My source says within the next 9-12 months.
Sorry to get off track...

No, the Treo 650 is not an EVDO phone...not sure on the Cobalt...as for the other stuff, I'm pretty sure your source is wrong...Sprint has no plans to make Sprint customers move over to Nextel phones...quite to the contrary, the rumors I've heard are about Sprint designing a dual network phone that will bridge Sprint to Nextel...the real key is the direct connect...as far as internet and multimedia, Sprint is so far ahead of Nextel, it wouldn't make any sense for them to force customers to go backwards...

Thanks to the tips towards the end of this thread, I now have Opera Mini working on my 5600 and it is AWESOME...I installed the low res, changed language to English, then installed the hi-res version over it, and it made all the difference in the world...I was able to log into a bank account and a fantasy football site that the regular built-in browser could never handle...I've been bummed for months that I had missed the opportunity to get webviewer while it was still for sale (luckily I have and love emailviewer), but I have to say Opera really does blow it away, especially for a free app...

If Opera Mini had copy/paste and OCR abilities this would really make it the idea browser for mobiles.
