I talked to a sprint tech today and he told me that he didn't have a lot of information on EV-DO, but that it was supposed to be about 2 mbps per second! he said that regular vision peaks at about 160 kbps, and usually runs at 50-70 kbps. here are a few links on EV-DO

http://www2.sprint.com/mr/news_dtl.do?id=7261

http://www.sprintpcsinfo.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=951

Here is an LG EV-DO capable phone that was approved by the FCC (It is a little outdated, saying that the 535 isn't released yet)

http://www.phonescoop.com/news/item.php?n=1116

The tech aso told me that you can expect streaming movies and streaming tv after the EV-DO system is fine tuned.

Is either of the EV-DO's capable making/recieving calls while surfing the net or is that EV-DV

Dubspoon - calls will come through if you're using data on EV-DO, but it will disconnect your browser session. With EV-DV you'll be able to use both simultaneously, but it looks like DV isn't in the pipeline for Sprint...

I remember reading somewhere that sprint is looking (or was looking at it) in 2007 or so... I'll see if I can dig up the article I read that on.

that's the same as now, you can recieve calls while browsing as long as it's idle. i thought whichever EV-DO or EV-DV would make it so those green and blue flags don't send a caller straight to VM and making calls while browsing

Yup, I believe that is what Invader J means. You should be able to choose to accept or to not accept an incoming call even when actively transferring data.

I've checked so many links I've got linkitus. WHY isn't the following information easy to find???
1- Is the EV-DO service already available, if not, when will it be?
2- What phones are compatible?
3- where on the Sprint website can you sign up?

I'm temporarily trying out a Cingular phone so I can use their EDGE service with my Mac but it's turning out to be slower than PCS Vision so far. If EV-DO from Spint is here or coming like real soon, I wouldn't need to switch carriers. Sounds like EV-Do is much much faster than EDGE could ever be anyway.

Can anyone answer these questions? Thanks in advance.

1 - EV-DO is available in a few areas already, but the full scale launch isn't going to take place for a couple of months. These are the latest coverage maps - http://www.sprint.com/business/products/products/evdoCoverage.jsp
2 - There currently are no Sprint phones that are EVDO capable, although the PPC6600 will probably get a software upgrade. The Verizon version of the same phone is EVDO capable. Sprint currently sells 2 aircards that are EVDO capable.
3 - There's really nothing to sign up for. You can buy an aircard and use it in your laptop with a data plan, but plans for EVDO on handsets have not been released, and there's no clue what the cost will be, whether current users will be grandfathered, etc. - sheureka

LOL... but is it going to be expanded to entire markets rather than just areas such as airports? I read one Sprint release where it listed markets with full coverage and those with partial (aitports) but then on another Sprint site where it had the map of existing and future coverage only the airports were shown as existing, and there was no future coverage. I'll need to be using it in the Charlotte market, and it is listed as scheduled for full market coverage, yet the map only shows the Charlotte/Douglas Int'l Airport area. Which is correct? If they're going to cover the whole market, that would be awesome and useable.

Well, over here in the upstate, New York region... it seems that some sort of 'updating' may already be taking place... effective this weekend.

Friday night I was listening to M2Radio on my phone on the way home from work. Saturday morning my Media Player went down due to an HTTP error. Later I discovered on Sprint's homepage for Vision (http://vision.sprintpcs.com) a message stating that the PCS Vision service was being 'upgraded' to provide a better experience, and services would be restored Sunday morning.

Here it is Sunday during the day now and there is a new message stating that simply PCS Vision services are being upgraded, we apologize for the inconvenience, etc. etc...

I have a strange feeling EV-DO is about to be deployed in this area, and they are working on it. If any of us didn't bookmark our websites into our phones, no one would be able to access Vision at all. It is only through my bookmarks that I can access websites through the phone. And again, unfortunately, the Media Player has been down ALL WEEKEND... damn and I wanted to show off TV and music to my friends at work. :-)

Dude, that would be awesome! I hope that's what's going on. Maybe a little inconvenience will be worth a great benefit. I tried Cinuglar's EDGE when I got back to my place (Winston-Salem) tonight, where I have a full signal, and speed is still dial-up, like 42-50kbs. Thank God I have roadrunner at home. So the EDGE phone goes in the garbage (or on ebay lol). Hoping for EV-DO deployment here soon. Thanks for the update.

Looking at the posted Sprint EV-DO coverage maps... It is disappointing that the deployment of EV-DO in the foreseeable future will *not* be nation/network-wide, unlike Vision/1xrtt. The suggestion is that many of us will *never* see EV-DO (or at least it may be many years out). Is there *any* indication if or when EV-DO will be as widespread as 1xrtt ?

I wonder if they will just hush hush roll it out, and then launch it nationwide at once with ads and such

There's more than 8000 towers to roll it out to. That means $$$$$. Best to get the
higher revenue markets done first to get some money "in the war chest", then work "outwards".
The outlying areas might be the first to get EV-DO Rev. A, so you'll be averaging faster speeds
than those of us in the initial roll-out.

Any word yet on what the phone/handset plans will be?

I'd sure hope that if you have vision now a plan change won't be required...

Wasn't it setup with the aircards that a plan change isn't required? (the $80/mo unlimited plan is exactly the same... if you get an EV-DO capable card, you get EV-DO speeds... and in areas where there isn't an EV-DO network you'll fallback to 1xRTT)

The one issue I can see coming up with regards to a nationwide rollout is the issue of available spectrum. In my market, SPCS only has 10Mhz (least of ANY carrier in my area) and so there's just no possible way SPCS is going to be able to squeeze EV-DO in that existing 10mhz and not end up with serious capacity issues. Verizon got lucky and landed 10 Mhz PCS spectrum in a deal with Cingular because Cingular had to divest some spectrum (they had 60Mhz here). Alas, unless Cingular divests more spectrum I won't be seeing EV-DO in my market anytime soon. :(

5 Mhz allows there to be AT LEAST 86 subscribers/sector, so the other 1.25MHz can carry
the EV-DO traffic. I'd think, except for peak times, this would be enough. (Peak traffic is where
EV-DV would really "shine".)

SprintUsers.com was created in January 2002 as a resource for users of Sprint PCS products and services to learn about and share information. We have cll phone reviews, Cellular Accessories, Downloads, PDA reviews, Ringtones, all of the latest Sprint PCS news and information, an area where you can find help in creating a ring tone or custom image for you phone, and so much more.
