Couldn't you just buy a Verizon phone without the contract and activate it on Sprint?

CoreyTheGent

No, you can't.

You Sprint folks need to calm down. You'll get a variant of either the V3c or the Samsung Slim.

With all the phones that are goin to come out...I would think this is goin to be the least talked about. Its old...its a motorola..and well its OLD. Id much rather hear bout super camera phones with optical zooms..and all that good stuff, Not a old moto that has a WAK looking UI ..like all the other newer verizon phones. There are much better phones in the sea then this.

fl00d_pr0z
08-08-2005, 01:38 PM
Cameras with optical zooms.... IMO sure a camera on a phone is fine, but I don't need a 2MP camera on my cell. I have a good digital camera if I want to take quality pics. What is out now, is pretty much fine for casual quick pictures.

CoreyTheGent
08-08-2005, 02:09 PM
With all the phones that are goin to come out...I would think this is goin to be the least talked about...It's actually the exact opposite and will be the most talked about out of every impending CDMA release for 2005. The only thing that could top it is perhaps the 5mp Samsung phone, but I don't personally see that coming until 2006 at the earliest.

Quill
08-08-2005, 02:40 PM
Especially since it will have the higher res camera, not the VGA camera the GSM version has and IIRC, more memory.
As much as people hate the hype surrounding the phone, it's got staying power, kindof like the Live Strong arm bands ... it's gotten so popular that not only do a lot of people have the phone now, but there are imitators, I mean competitors on the horizon.
Of course, by the time you CDMA folks get it, I'll have the Nokia 6682. Ha!

Yes, I do sometimes post just to annoy you. ;)

Yep. The Razr surpassed gimmick a few stops back. It is now severely close to becoming apart of American culture overall, just like the iPod. Once it crushes the Samsung Slim, its position will be solidified.

Stupid RAZR......stupid VZW. All I gotta say is.......CRIPPLED Bluetooth! (or none at all?)

Now, Sprint better get the SLIM....I'll pay whatever price they ask....maybe.

I hope this phone achieves the cult status that the iPod and LiveStrong bracelets enjoy so I can boycott it as well. Just like Jurassic Park, Titanic (still haven't seen it), capri pants (stopped seeing a girl once cause she wore them, though that was like back in '97), and all the other crap that I deem too "in" to be a part of, I will NEVER own a RAZR, even if it comes to Sprint and costs $0.00. I can't stand it, it is hideous, and should be discontinued before it even comes out. Garbage :)

Word! I played with a co-worker's Cingular Razr and I was not impressed at all. It felt flimsy, the buttons were hard to press, and worst of all, the sound quality (earpiece) was HORRENDOUS! At any volume, it crackled and distorted like it was turned up too loud, and it was pretty weak overall. Don't know if it's indicative of all of them, but suffice it to say I was extremely underwhelmed.

Just a quick correction. It does have speakerphone. And fully functioning BT. Any Sprint phones have that in the current lineup?

I don't miss video recording. I had two different phones with video recording over the course of 18 months...between the two phones I used the feature three times. So for me, it's not an issue.
And being that I actually own one, I can say with first-hand knowledge it is a very good phone. No, it's not a fully featured, bleeding edge gadget geek phone. I've had those and were bored by them when it came to a point where I just wanted to make a freaking phone call.

Besides, the CDMA version is going to have features like a higher res cam and probably video recording. But, hey, if you're happy with your LG MM535, more power to you, because that's the beauty of diversity and competition.

Meanwhile, I'll be scoping out the phones my brother is going to send me from Germany.

i actually own the zen touch, so i agree with you that it has superior sound over many players. but the ipod is king for having the best integrated music store....bar none....not to mention a pretty simple and intuitive interface.

there are so many electronic devices that are "all sizzle and no steak" (most cellphones included)...the iPod just isn't one of them.

Exactly! See, I'm cool with you not wanting a RAZR. I'm already getting annoyed by the fact that I'm seeing more people with it. Heh. But, the only phones out there that are truly pieces of crap are Kyoceras and the Motorola T720. Heh.

I was inches away from buying a Samsung P777, but the minute the price dropped on the RAZR, I had to have it. And after comparing sound quality on test calls, I'm glad I bought the Moto. There was this constant buzzing in the background, not as bad as my old a620, but it was still a Sammy hiss.

Still, much as I love this phone, it's not going to last more than six months. That's just how I am. I'm torn between the SE W800 or the Nokia 6682. Who knows if either will make me happy...at least I know my RAZR will do what I really need it to do...make phone calls and send text messages.

Who needs a signal when they have a cool phone? Heh.

BTW, I love my iPod. I looked at the Zen and the Dell DJ, but, I just had to have an iPod. I just didn't like the others as much. Crazy, I know. I'm just a simpleton. With *****in' Sony noise-cancelling headphones. That helps. Heh.

Eh, I've held one in my hand, I've used it, I can firmly say it is WAY overrated. I think the funnier thing is that I declined to give a potentially cool girl a chance, lol, I think back on that sometimes and wonder. It was very Seinfeld of me. As for the iPod, it is just too promoted, I can't stand hearing about it, so the last thing I want is to own one. I'd rather get a Nomad or Dell Jukebox or Rio.

Alright, alright, you got me. LOL After using Sanyos, Motos are a breath of fresh air. But, like I said, by Christmas, I'll have a new toy, possibly two, depending on how quick I get a couple bills paid off next month. And it's unlikely either will be Motos. Most people will not care. Some will, but most won't. Those who do will get over it.

I think VZW's quarterly numbers show that many people have wants and/or priorities not always vocalized on these mobile phone forums.

From a business standpoint, this makes perfect sense. One interface used regardless of phone is easier to support. An easier support process means troubletickets are handled faster and tech support wait times are not as long.

As people switch phones, they will not have to learn new interfaces.

Firmware and software equipment will work more efficiently.

This all equates to happy customers, low churn rates, and increased customer loyalty. VZW, like Sprint is a business when it's all said and done.

Just for you, tu, I got a Samsung c207 ... hahahaha. But seriously, I did buy one off HoFo. First time in two months I've cheated on my RAZR. Heh.

As for the rest of the folks belaboring the point that the RAZR is featureless, may I remind you the fully-functioning Bluetooth is wonderful. Oh, and the phones I've used that had more features were pretty crappy phones. So, I will take a boring, featureless gimmicky phone that actually works over some bleeding edge, gadget phone that can barely pull a signal anyday.

Unless it's that HTC Wizard. Me likey. Mmmm, slide out QWERTY keyboard .... gggaaaahhddddggggg.

Okay, let's face it, I just like phones. My sister was making fun of me recently saying 'I don't need a new phone every two months like some *coughcoughkriscoughcough* people.' And I said, 'It is so not every two months.'

Crap. It is ... so ... every ... two ... months. Cingular, eight months, four phones. That means I'll have two more phones by Christmas.

I wonder if there's a cell phone clinic ... you know, a place where they give you dummy phones to play with as you slowly wean off the addiction to the real thing.

It was $35. A temporary fix until my birthday. I don't know what my next toy will be.
Yes, it is uber small. My husband said it's so small, it's not itty bitty, just itty. Surprisingly, for a basic phone, I really like it. Gonna take it to the office with me tomorrow and see how it handles the metal fortress of doom. Heh.

The only people that are pricks are the folks from the Verizon forum that troll...but I digress.

If Verizon is getting the CDMA V3 and the Samsung Slim phone, what in the hell is Sprint gonna get to counterpoint that? Because it'll be a crying shame when the day comes that I actually say Verizon has a better lineup that Sprint. Oh, please Sprint folks, don't stone me for blasphemy. ;)

A standardized UI sounds great, but have you used Verizon's UI? It's horrendous- the worst UI of ANY phone I've ever used period. If you're going to go with a standardized UI, go with Series 60, 40, or the Sony Ericsson UI, or a knockoff of any of the above. Frankly, look how many dissatisfied customers purchased the LG VX8100. Look at the class-action against the Motorola V710.

How many people on this forum took the UI into consideration when purchasing their handset? I surely did. My mom isn't a cell phone junkie, but she certainly did. How many people here have a preference for the phone's UI? Most of them. While SUsers aren't a majority, I doubt they're the only ones.

The VZW UI is not acceptable, and is another feather in the cap of unacceptable practices VZW is participating in. (Frankly, I think the FCC should be considering withdrawing their license to operate as a mobile provider.)

yeah thanks for editing that.. it did come off to be a bit untasteful..
Anyways back to the point.. The average standard for camera's these days are still
3.2 Megapixels because every store that sells camera's have more that size then anything else because it gets the job done.. having a cell phone that is higher then the standard doesn't make any sense.. I personally think its overkill to have that size of a camera on a phone because the pictures probably still aren't gonna look as great as a regular digital camera because they dont have the lenses for it with the exception of that 7.2 megapixel camera Samsung also has in their lineup..

And im the type of person thinks that anything over 5 mega pixels is overkill because human eyes cant even tell the difference so whats the point?

I dont think the S250's lens is manufactured by Pentax. The lens isnt optical its all digital.

I know for certain that the V7800, the 5.3MP and 3.2 MP (forgot the names) are manufactured by Pentax.

Samsung has in the works in its (R&D lab at Suwon) an optical zoom lens that doesnt have moving parts. It's still uncertain when they might incoporate it into their phones.

Imagine if VZW's fate was left to a bunch of SprintUsers.com members? Scary thought. :scare: Lose a license over an UI?

I do own a LG vx8100 and I purchased two others for other members of my family share plan. You get used to the UI.

Jeez, tuolumne, how many times does ConceptVBS have to correct your mistakes? It's no telling what other garbage you've been spewing that he simply missed.

blue is correct, Verizon forcing that UI on us is an abomination. They will continue to get away with it, however. There won't be any lagging sales, no complaints outside of technology oriented people such as ourselves. That's precisely why they are doing it. Verizon is the smartest business in the industry, if the implementation of this UI was going to effect their bottom line then it wouldn't be happening. There were no mass returns of the VX-8100, just some people on the internet complaining (what's new?). That damn Bluetooth lawsuit didn't do jack, either. As I've said time and time again, that machine called Verizon Wireless cannot be stopped. The majority of their customers will love the new UI. They are also projected by at least two analysts to surpass Cingular as the #1 carrier by 2006 or 2007 if the current trend of their flawless quarters continue. I don't really read into that very much nor do I co-sign it being true, it's just yet another sign of how well VZW is doing.

1mm extra of thickness for the addition of an upgraded Qualcomm EV-DO chipset and 1.3mp camera (not to mention all the other crap that comes with CDMA) is better than anyone could've expected, including Motorola themselves most likely.

There will be a joint Verizon-Motorola campaign to help distinguish the current GSM Razr from the V3c. They've already taken steps toward this by offering it in that gunmetal color. If the Razr II is out by then, all the more better for Moto as it will create a halo effect. As I've said before, the V3c will see an advertising campaign like no other CDMA handset before it.

tuolumne is correct about the 5mp Samsung. There's no question that it's coming. Just a matter of when. And it's confirmed to most resemble the S250 pictured in his avatar at the moment. Of course, I'm just speaking for right now. As of this very moment. It's all subject to change, just like everything I say.

You can change the color scheme but you can't get rid of the red lines which border the top and bottom of the screen.

You really get used to it and it doesn't bother you too much after a while. I'm used to it already. I can still add/remove wallpapers and add/remove gif's.

I don't think VZW will go broke over it and I don't think they'll lose their wireless license to sell wireless service over it either.

They are a growth machine and a phone manufacturer would be foolish to deny any special requests for customization. It's a big business world out there.

I believe Sprint already does this with charging ports am I wrong? Aren't they very similar if not the same for new phones?

Funny thing. I noticed the red lines right away. My parents, whom I purchased the other LG's for, didn't even comment on it but rather made reference to how nice the phone(s) looked to the eyes and how solid they felt.

A UI is the least of Verizon's crimes as a provider.

It's a hideous UI- there's a row of 5 "tabs" that let you move between menus. Services are all relabeled for VZW uses. This means all sub-menu options are labeled under 5 lists instead of 9 or 12, so submenus are too large (these are high end phones, mind you.) Making matters worse, all services are rebranded for VZW ("Get FLIX") ("GET PIX") which is ridiculous.

I've used over 100 3G cell phones. Not a single one has a UI as bad. Not a single one.

I digress, did you know that my MM535 ($200.00 with new activation) has an Mp3 player? Did you know their 8100 doesn't? ($220.00 with new activation).

Manufacturer customization is a good thing at times- Sprint's charger setup is very nice and convenient. Sprint's picture mail integration is nothing short of fantastic and is tightly integrated.

Manufacturer 'communization' when it's not at the will of consumers (to which I think the UI, the crippling of bluetooth, the implementation of BREW over J2ME, the inability to send ringers / images to your phone, the crippling of the Mp3 player, and the inability to use the memory card to transfer your pictures.

The VX-8100 has an mp3 player, it's just crippled and not as capable as the E815's (playlists, etc.). I believe there's also chunks of the internal memory that can't be accessed. Verizon was going to launch this new music downloading service called "Music On Demand" with the VX-8100 being the flagship of this service. They crippled it ahead of time in order to force users to use Music On Demand. I'm not sure where MOD is at the moment, however. But there's talk of LG having an impending firmware upgrade that unlocks the VX-8100's mp3 player. For now, it helps explain why the E815 has consistently outsold it and has infact been Verizon's top selling handset overall for a few weeks now.

I paid $ 49.99 for mine. I still email ringtones from my PC.

BREW doesn't bother me. I'm not that hardcore. There are plenty of MP3 clips, wallpapers, games etc for the average person seeking to conveniently add them to their phone. I'd rather not pay for them if I don't have to, but this is not my deciding factor in whom I choose my wireless phone service with.

I've been able to pair my LG 8100 with my MAC via bluetooth. The only thing I can't seem to do is transfer my phonebook contacts. For checking email on the go it is great. I have a MOU plan so I can use my anytime bucket of minutes which would never go to use otherwise and don't have to subscribe to any $ 10 or $15 data plan. Plus nights and weekends are completely free. Not too shabby in my situation or for what I use it for.

Your hand would be constantly straying back and forth from the bottom to the top as the arrow key plays a part (among other things, such as text messages and entering any kind of words/numbers). The D-Pad area (including the softkeys) needs to be above the keypad, not below it.

Em, stupid? Basic, yes. Stupid ... I disagree.

But, the only time it's gotten really hot was when I left it in my car earlier this summer while it was plugged into the charger. I'm not quite sure how you had an experience with a RAZR that got really hot just by holding it ... but, it does have a fair amount of metal alloy on its exterior, so you can't let it sit in the sun, that's for sure.

But, I'm sure that I wont be able to keep them in stock...........

I can hear the phone calls now:

"Dude, do you have that phone thats like paper thin?"

Or I can see a typical CDMA Razr sale:
<Showing customer A670:>
"Um, like I don't know.... it's kinda big...."
<Shows customer CDMA Razr>
"OH MY GAWD!!!!!! That phone is sooooooo cute and it fits perfectly in the back pocket of my new hip-huggers, OH MY GAWD... Tina will be like so jealous... I gotta have it!!!!!!"
<Trys to offer customer insurance for $4.99/mo.>
"I don't need that, my bill is like way to high as it is...."

Three days later......
"Um, I was like drunk the other night and I accidentaly broke my phone after I snapped it in half..."
<That'll be $399.99...>
"What!? I like only paid 200 for it! OMG, Verizon sucks!!!" <---Eventhough I totally agree with her on this
<Well, I did offer you the insurance...>
"Like I'm supposed to know I'm going to break my phone...GAWD"

Funny that people think this phone is attractive only to young people ... I've not seen a person under 30 with one (excluding a handful of Cingular and T-Mo reps). Up until last week, the only people I saw carrying them were executive types in shirts and ties.

And trust me, joesacco, they'll know the name of the phone. I've never had a phone so recognizable ... every time I pull it out of my pocket (which is a lot, Deval likes to text message) people say "Oooh, is that a RAZR?"

I actually didn't realize people would react like that. Oh, well. No matter what, it's a great phone ... at least mine is. :)

After dealing with Sprint stores all day yesterday and getting nothoing accomplished, I have been very tempted by a T-Mob sign at the store by my work advertising a $99 Razr. I never thought it was a $500 phone but man $99 iis a deal. That sign just taunts me.

You know you want it!

remember that demand varies by market... mostly young people want the Razr here. One out of every 5 of my younger customers ask for it as "that thin phone on the commercial." If it's one thing I know, it's that this town is all about glitz, glamor, and size... the younger market wants a phone that can do almost all of the big features (camera/video/texting), but looks cool. Middle-aged consumers want a phone that can do everything but not a PDA. Suits and white-collar workers want PDA phones with Broadband access and basically walks the dog for them. And the only consistant I've found is that older consumers want the basics (Talk/End/Voicemail).

No offense, joesacco1584, but what are you doing with an N400 if you sell phones?

Regarding the Verizon RAZR UI: It won't matter what it looks like as long as its faster than the moto version. That has got to be one of the slowest-responding devices I've ever used. That's one thing I love about the 5600 so much: lightning-fast response; you can't outpace the buffer.

Oh, you know I hadn't noticed you are in Vegas. This is definitely an exception. Seattle is very different. I know. I lived in Vegas for two and a half years. What you say about Vegas is absolutely right as far as the market goes. I actually got my first cell phone at the Circuit City on Tropicana just a couple miles from UNLV. Back before CC sold out to Verizon. LOL

Up here, though, it is different. Like I said, initially when I saw the RAZR in the wild, it was executives. The ones who don't want PDAs or smartphones, that's my guess. It's changing now with the price drop. By the time I notice an oversaturation, I will likely have moved on, so I'm not worried about it.

Like it or not, the RAZR has developed a life of its own. Good luck with selling it, joesacco.

Obviously not, I am just saying since its $200 now it surprises me they would want to be seen with it. Instead of like the S710a or something.Celebrities don't like chunky, feature-filled handsets such as the S710a. Infact the majority of the world doesn't. The Razr serves its purpose when it comes to the most basic necessities of a cell phone, and for that reason celebrities seem to be sticking with it. Hell, I'm just now starting to see it in music videos.

And stop trying to reason with these people, Q. You know good and well that Razr V3 threads bring out some of the most stupid statements.

First paragraph: Exactly.

Second paragrah: I know. I came to that conclusion sometime yesterday afternoon. I give up. What's funny is people don't actually hate the phone (for the most part, since so few have done more than play with one), they hate the hype, the ubiquitousness of it (made up another word, I think).

Besides, by the time CDMA folks get it, I'll be three phones past the RAZR, and they'll hate on those handsets, too. Wait till my brother starts sending me German phones.

Its a long story, but i'll sum it up real quick

Bought 7400 & Added Second Line, Changed Plan
7400 Broke, Found out that when plan changed... rep dropped insurance
Stuck with N400 until I can produce $400 out of an orface which wishes to remain anyomous.

That's the story in a nutshell

Very close to where I used to live ... off Trop near the Elvis museum. Heh. My husband graduated from UNLV.

But, I digress ... so is that a Verizon store? Must be ... when I was in Vegas, everybody had AT&T or Verizon. It's been almost three years since we moved back. I'm sure things have changed a lot.

Ubiquity....
....and I do hate the phone itself. Mainly the fact that its sooo sloooow and so fragile. Also I wouldn't want to constantly worry about dropping it through a storm-drain grate.

Ubiquity ... good. I hate having to look things up so I can properly conjugate them.

Compared to the v551, the RAZR's fast. Scary, I know. I don't have any other relatively new mid-level phones to compare it to ...

Never thought about dropping it through a storm drain. I'll be sure never to stand over one while talking :) ... but, Lockline is insuring it now, so I don't stress about it. I haven't encountered any problems with its build. It's actually held up better to drops than my v551, which has a couple scuffs and scratches. I nearly had a heart attack the first time -- yeah, first time -- I dropped it. But, not a scratch or scuff to be seen. Maybe I'm lucky.

I wonder how far you have to drop one before it breaks?

Agent store... and the corporate is one block north of us . All I know is that things have changed a lot in the five years I've been back here..

All I can add to this thread is who cares that verizon is getting the RAZR?? And who cares about the RAZR period?? It's just a regular ole motorola phone lacking on features and just and over hyped fashion statement.

The CDMA version is more feature laden (+1xEVDO) than the first generation GSM model including a 1.3 or higher megapixel camera. The new GSM verison will also include more high end features.
