if someone sends a message while my phone is turned off will i recieve the messages when i turn the phone on or will it be lost in cyberspace forever?

you will recieve it when the phone is on, the system stores the message in the network and as soon as your phone comes on and talks to the network it will be sent to your phone, Same thing with V-mails.

I get text and voicemail all the time while my phone is on. Usually within a minute of turning it on the notification comes through

the network only holds the message for 72 hours, if your phone is off for longer then you won't get the message.
