After much research and converting audio files to 3g2 I found that it is useless. At first, I thought cool I can have pretty much unlimited ringtones on my 5600 as long as I can convert the ringtones to 3g2 and save them to the mini sd card cuz the 3MB internal memory just dont cut it. Then I found out that once you set a particular 3g2 video as ringtone, the 5600 copies the video file from the SD card into the phone's internal memory and access the internal memory when the phone rings. This defeats the purpose of converting an audio clip into 3g2 and save it to the SD card. This is why so many people are complaining that they cant set their 3g2 as ringtone. They'd get "WARNING This file cannot be set." That's because the file they're trying to set as ringtone is either too big or bigger than their internal memory. The phone can't copy it from the SD card to the memory.
If your thinking "yeah but 3g2 has audio and video". Well 5600 doesnt show the video on the external screen. By default, when you flip open the phone, the call is automatically answered and therefore you cant see the video anyway. This is another reason why converting an audio clip to 3g2 to be set as ringtone is useless. Unless you change the setting to only press the talk button to answer or the phone is already opened then you'll be able to see the video portion of the ringtone.
It would be ALOT easier to make aac/m4a ringtones and upload it with focus or rumkin. The file size would be smaller than a 3g2 ringtone and since it's smaller size, you can make a longer ringtone. I have an M4A ringtone that's about a minute long. You can't do that with a 3g2 ringer.
The only good reason I can think of to convert to 3g2 ringtone is you dont have vision and dont want to pay the $.01/KB to upload the ringtone.
I dont see anyone who owns a 5600 and not have vision. I know the phone is expensive but to have a bad ass phone and not have vision?? That's like owning a Pentium D 840 Extreme running Win2K3 data center just to listen to MP3.
I'd consider this as a major flaw to the phone design because the internal memory is so small and there's no way to use the mini SD for any setting at all. I guess we can add this to the "reasons why 5600 sucks" list on top of creaky hinge (this is driving me crazy), poor camera at low light no light, and no #777.
Am I going to give up the 5600?? hell no. Despite all these flaws, I'm still gonna keep it b/c so far, the positive still out weighs the negative. There's no other PTT phone from verizon, nextel that can do that the 5600 can do. The 5600 is in a class by it self. There, I'm done *****ing. Feel free to prove me wrong

Unfortunately, It's The Quality Of The Ringtone That You Don't Want To Lose. M4a Or Aac Files Do Take Up Alot Of Space And To Add A Larger Internal Memory Might Cause Us To Lose Some Other Features That This Phone Offers. My Toshiba Had A 3mb Memory And I Had Excess Mp3 Quality Ringers And Even More Qcp's.
there Is Only So Much You Can Expect From A Phone, Especially For This Phones Price. So, Despite The Creaky Hinge (which I Haven't Noticed), The Poor Camera In Low Light (normal For Most Camera/phones) And The #777 (n/a To Me) I Don't Have A Problem. There Is No Absolute Phone And Like You Said, There's No Other "..." Phone That Can Do What The 5600 Can Do.
The MiniSD Is For The Phones Features Like Mp3 Player And Watching Movies, Etc. I Don't Think Is Was Intended For Ringtone Capacity. It Would Be Nice To Use It For That, But The Phone Processes Enough To Have To Run The Sd When Someone Calls. Look How Long It Takes You To Access A Song From The Mp3 Or A Video.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but I am pretty sure the Moto E-815 from Verizon can do everything the 5600 can do and then some (EV-DO, blutooth, for starters). Not to mention that it is only around $150!!! NOTHING can touch that price range for what it is capable of.
1gb MINI SD card for 5600 about $74, which includes shipping. Anyone find a lower price?
I LOVE THE 5600. Best reception by far! great screen, sound quality etc. no noisy hinge on mine!

That's the whole point of my post, making 3g2 ringtones is useless. Aac ringtones is the way to go.
To Add A Larger Internal Memory Might Cause Us To Lose Some Other Features That This Phone Offers.
I dont see how this can be true. It doesnt increase the physical size of memory to increase capacity of the memory. Why do you think a 16MB MiniSD card is the same physical size of a 1GB MiniSD card. Or a stick of 128MB RAM to a 2GB RAM.
there Is Only So Much You Can Expect From A Phone, Especially For This Phones Price.
$430 retail is ALOT for a phone. so yes for $430 why only have 3 MB of internal RAM?
I know that Sanyo is notorious for using SMALL memories on their phones. But com'n If you're going put an option to play ringtone from the MiniSD then let it play from the MiniSD.

No arguement there.

e815 has no QVGA, supports TF not MiniSD. I'd rather use miniSD (up to 1gb) than TF (256MB). It's a b t ch to remove the TF card from the e815. That doesnt bother me as long as you can use the phone as thumb drive but the e815 does not support mass storage function. You have remove the TF card to transfer files. no PTT!! 4x digital zoom instead of 16x digital zoom. Yeah I know it's useless but 16X instead of 4X. no T9, It does have full duplex which is good. The e815 should be compared to the LG's MM545 or the MM-A940 not the 5600
Thank You AZNDANO, but that would disqualify the 815 from this comparison.

The site you quote is based in UK. I doubt they'll ship you a 1gb mini SD to Los Angeles for $74.
Ok, let's take our time with this please so as not to rush into it. If I ask a question, it is because I may not know. First, isn't M4A and 3G2 the same type of file?; slightly better quality than AAC, but the same principle?
I never said that more memory would increase the physical size of the phone (refer to quote). I said that you might lose some features and you answered it in your reply. A 16mb card is the same size as a 1g card, but the price is higher due to the additional memory. Makes sense huh?
As far as the phones price is considered, $430 is not alot for a phone in comparison to so many other phones that have similiar or higher prices and do not offer anywhere near as many features. Look at the V3 Razr and bunch of other Moto phones. There are plenty phones priced this way and are crap compared.
Continued...
3mb storage, I assume is the norm for now, to increase with more phones. I will not compare this to other world phones, GSM and other phones not even offered in the US, because they are not offered here for whatever reason.
You started this thread and I quoted you following saying that there is no "Absolute Phone". When you find a phone with an 8mp camera, stereo quality calls and speaker, that can do the laundry and pick up the kids from soccer practice, then you have an "Absolute Phone". You compared the N90 and That's fine, but I'm not familiar with this phone so I'll ask: Is it PTT? Is it available in the US under a US Service Provider?
I'm not trying to be argumentative, but I like my 5600 and I would like others to like their 5600 too. People spend so much time beefing about phone features that aren't perfect. Put it down and walk away. Stop using the crappy phone and make your own. I have some wire hangers and masking tape for whoever wants to build their own "Perfect phone!"
Thanks!

"If I ask a question, it is because I may not know. First, isn't M4A and 3G2 the same type of file?; slightly better quality than AAC, but the same principle?"
m4a is audio only. 3g2 is audio and video. A portion of the file is video. Both uses AAC compression. The most important part of ringer is the audio portion. Example, lets say that an m4a ringer compressed at 56k rate at 300kb size is 60 seconds long. A 3g2 ringer with aac compressed at 56k rate at 300k size is only 30 seconds long b/c of the 300k, the 150k is used for video portion which you won't see with the phone closed. That means the 150K is useless junk taking up more room on your memory. So if you make an m4a ringer the same length as a 3g2 ringer, the m4a will only use 1/2 of file size. If you compressed an m4a at double the bitrate you'll end up with the same size file as a 3g2 but the quality is sound ALOT cleaner. it would be the difference between listening to MP3 compressed at 56k vs 128k bitrate.
I said that you might lose some features and you answered it in your reply. A 16mb card is the same size as a 1g card, but the price is higher due to the additional memory. Makes sense huh?
I uderstand exactly that you mean that by using 3mb for memory, Sanyo can save a few dollars that they can use toward implementing other features such as the stop watch and a thumb drive function. But what's the price difference between 3MB and 32MB? A few dollars? Here's an example: 5600 with 3MB internal memory for $429.00 or 5610 with indentical feature as as the 5600 but with 32MB internal memory for $439.99. I would fork out the additional 10 to get the 32MB internal memory that you CAN NOT upgrade later. And I'm sure people who download alot of ringtones and picture ID will agree. 3MB just dont cut it.
As far as the phones price is considered, $430 is not alot for a phone in comparison to so many other phones that have similiar or higher prices and do not offer anywhere near as many features.
$430 is a lot for a phone with only 3MB internal memory. It's in the same price range of a low cost pda phone and high cost phone phone. I don't think you can find a $400-$450 phone with only 3MB of internal memory.
Look at the V3 Razr and bunch of other Moto phones. There are plenty phones priced this way and are crap compared
V3 is the biggest crap ever made or should I say the thinnest piece of crap. But you know what, the pricing went to the R&D team for designing and developing components so thin that the overall thickness of the phone is slightly thicker than 1/2" 14mm to be exact or about helf as thick as the 5600. And you know what? The RAZR has 5MB of internal memory. That's where the money went.
Continued...
3mb storage, I assume is the norm for now, to increase with more phones. I will not compare this to other world phones, GSM and other phones not even offered in the US, because they are not offered here for whatever reason.
Sprint's LG 535 has 20MB internal memory. Verizon's Moto e815 has 40MB. True that alot of Sprint phones have 1 or 2 megs but we're talking about a high end phone by US standard here.
You started this thread and I quoted you following saying that there is no "Absolute Phone". When you find a phone with an 8mp camera, stereo quality calls and speaker, that can do the laundry and pick up the kids from soccer practice, then you have an "Absolute Phone".
The purpose of this thread was my venting out that ringers set to play from SD card is useless because whatever you set the ringer, the phone saves it to the internal memory or lack of. It doenst actually play from the MiniSD and I couldnt find any one posting anything like it that I could find. I had to find out myself when I made a 3g2 ringer and set my phone to it.
You compared the N90 and That's fine, but I'm not familiar with this phone so I'll ask: Is it PTT?
yes
Is it available in the US under a US Service Provider?
It'll be out soon. Probably in August and yes it will work with Cingular or T-Mobile. Cingular and T-Mo will have PTT soon and this phone will work with their PTT.
It also has 2MP camera Carl Zeiss lenses, 352 x 416 pixels screen (5600 has 240 X 320), Symbian Series 60 operating system. I dont know what it is but people are she-itting bricks over it so it must be good.
I'm not trying to be argumentative, but I like my 5600 and I would like others to like their 5600 too.
I know you love your 5600 and you know what, I love my 5600 too. I even made other high end GSM phone owners hate their phone and fall in love with my phone cuz I know all the features it has and I show them.
People spend so much time beefing about phone features that aren't perfect. Put it down and walk away. Stop using the crappy phone and make your own. I have some wire hangers and masking tape for whoever wants to build their own "Perfect phone!"

Believe me I would if I could. I'm a technical person. I'm a car stereo installer. When I was building my car stereo system for competition, I couldnt find a head unit that I want. Everyone's using Alpine indash DVD or Eclipse indash video monitor. I wanted to be unique and have something no one has. I designed and built a head unit that does touch screen, plays all downloaded audio video files in any format, DVDs ripped into the HDD, region free, burns CDRs and CDRWs, wireless file transfer, desktop control from my bedroom, GPS navigation, full internet access alarm control and programming. It allows touch screen vehicle start up, lock, unlock, open driver door, open pass door, roll windows up and down turn on head/parking lights, monitor alarm status, recall recent alarm triggers, OBD-II for virtual dashboard and engine diagnostic, phone number search with advanced reverse look up any many more. I even redesign and reconstruct my dash around my system.
Kutos for posting a long post from your cell phone. Your thumb must be tired. Can we say carpal tunnel :)

[B][I][COLOR=Indigo]What program do you use to convert mp3 to m4a? How long should the mp3 be to double compress as a m4a, so you can upload it to the phone and use it as a ringer? and how you save it to phone? through PC Sync? or mass storage to sd card?
...the story is that I have 3 mp3 songs that I'd like to use as ringtones. I trimmed'em to 30 sec and I don't know how to convert them and upload them. Your idea of double compression to get best quality sounds great. If you can explain how you transform, upload and use it as a ringtone I'd appreciate it. :fingers:

I use EZ CD Extractor. It has a built in audio file converter. You can adjust the bitrate. The double the bitrate im talking about is encoding at 128kbps. 30 seconds long audio would about 500KB. That might be too big. I've done an audio clip at 1 minute 7 seconds long encoded at 56kbps that's 484KB. That uploaded to my phone ok. I use Rumkin upload site to upload the ringer to my phone.

I don't have EZ CD Extractor to adjust the bitrate but I've trimmed, convert & upload the mp3 to the phone at whatever the bitrate was 160, 192... I could only fit 6 at 360kb cause I have some pictures Saved to Phone & still have 2 apps left on it, some trial versions of TV stuff, which I'll erase today to upload more ringers :)) but after all was said & done... I'm kind of waiting for the phone to ring
By the way I've made 2 of my friends jelous, they have Cingular & Cricket, when my phone was ringing with a song in my native language..they expected an english version, they were all over me; how u did that, how can we do it, etc. Told them that Cingular @ Cricket are trailing way behind.. boy, did it feel good :) The Cingular guy wants to come to Sprint (more for company discount, but my ringer helped a lot)
Anyway, thanks for the help.

use the tool and instructions found at the address below, i get files that are about half the size or less than what you are getting and sound quality is superb.
EDIT: oh and don't do anything more than 30 seconds, at 30 seconds the phone goes to voicemail so anything after that is useless anyway.
I am struggling trying to use .3g2 files as ring tones on my 5600.
In a message above I read "This is why so many people are complaining that they cant set their 3g2 as ringtone. They'd get "WARNING This file cannot be set." That's because the file they're trying to set as ringtone is either too big or bigger than their internal memory. The phone can't copy it from the SD card to the memory."
Yet my 3g2 file is only 32k, so I don't think running out of memory can be the problem.
Why not just use focus to up and download files? Because I live in Alaska and cannot get text messaging and PCS Vision even though I am paying for it. So, whatever original ring tones I want to put on my 5600 I have to do via USB.
I realize the USB connection cannot be used for purely audio files, but am tracking on using video ring tones essentially as an audio ringtones, as has been discussed here. I follow all the directions for getting the 3g2 on to my 5600. I choose Sounds, Ringer Types, etc. and when presented with my ringer options can see my .3g2 in the SANYO100 folder file just fine; I can even play it and it sounds fine. But I get the "WARNING! This file cannot be set" error every time I try to select it. The file is only 32k.
So, if this is not a memory problem, any idea what is going on here?
