Motorola, Sprint Team Up For WiMax Test
Today, 3:50 PM source: Sprint / RCR News

Motorola and Sprint have entered into an agreement to deploy WiMax mobile (802.16e) test networks in 2005 and 2006. The companies expect this partnership to serve as test bed, to work the kinks out of WiMax mobile deployments for themselves as well as other companies once the standard is ratified later this year. Sprint has been making a major commitment to WiMax mobile, recently announcing an equipment partnership with Intel as well. One reason for the interest could be that when Sprint and Nextel merge, they will have 2.5 GHz spectrum (the band WiMax works in) covering 80% of the US population. Nextel recently announced they will be testing a competing wireless broadband technology, UMTS-TDD, in the same 2.5 GHz spectrum in Washington, DC.

I'd say it's inevitable at this point, Matt. Ol' Chris Price even has some new Sprint/Motorola information which he's apparently holding from us, assuming it's not what I posted above.

Im wondering if they in a sense, had to team up because of the merger and nextel ONLY carries moto phones.

in any event. this is good. i like motorola phones.. to an extent. haha. there screens always seem to high quality. but the cameras.. im nto fond of them. because of the while control bar when you open it.

Long as they come with Nextel's build quality, I'll support them. If not, I'm afraid I won't be able to.

Nextel Moto build Quality + Better syle = Motorola's Sprint Lineup? I hope... :fingers:

Moto phones are okay... the RF seems to be pretty good... But the software is buggy as hell - and the menus feel really clunky to me.

I have confirmation of a few things.

1) Moto will officially be back in with Sprint post-merger.
2) Sprint is seriously considering an iTunes phone.

What else is to say? Its too expensive to sell very well. People can justify $280 for an 8300, but not $500 when they could get a camera + phone cheaper.. much cheaper.

i'd like to see a new StarTAC for sprint. i know there was some "10 year anniversary" one that came out a while back, but damn i loved that phone.

Yeah a new StarTac would be great. Motorola's build quality is great. That Nextel i860 is so smooth and solid. Does this mean that Sprint will be more in Motorola's focus or that Moto will just develop more phones again? Like does this give Sprint "priority" for the CDMA RAZR (pending a US release)?

Whether or not Sprint gets it, or something even better, is what I have no idea about.

It should definitely make Sprint an overall higher priority than Verizon, however.

i guess i can see where you could make that comparison, but coming from someone that had both phones, i'd MUCH rather have an old StarTAC than an a400. and that new StarTAC just looks awesome!

You'll never see that Startac released with a US carrier. Nobody wants it, they barely want the V60 series anymore. Motorola certainly needs something new to fill that gap, however, at least in my opinion.

The Vx series will be big. If I remember, I liked the design of the PEBL. But the RAZR sold so outstandingly well that Motorola is running with the concept. I wouldn't be surprised to see low end Vx series phones within the next 6-10 months.

Yeah, I was going to say that, sneak. A mix of the V60c and the Razr V3 would be nice.

Hell, the whole future Motorola lineup is focused around the Razr, at least from the signs that I'm seeing.

With Motorola, BlueTooth (uncrippled) is a possibility.

It definately is. Actually Bluetooth itself. No high end non-pda phones have it (besides the upcoming 940....TUOLUMNE i know you want to boast that) Moto definately will provide in the features department I am certain of.
