I was just wondering, why has Sprint only offered just a few Motorola phones total? Is there some kind of hostility between the two companies? Someone please fill me in here.

Not too much, just stay tuned. Motorola's largest carrier that they just happen to ship CDMA phones to isn't Verizon anymore, the general results are obvious, I'll fill in the blanks for everyone, later.

To answer the original question, yes there was quite a falling out between Qualcomm and Motorola and Sprint a few years back. Motorola stopped using Qualcomm's CDMA chipsets and licensing their technology the way both Sprint and Qualcomm wanted Motorola to.
When Motorola started offering non-Qualcomm phones to Verizon, the frost got only deeper.
Now, with the management changes at Qualcomm, there is talk of a rapproachment between the two companies.
Motorola sees the writing on the wall with the Nextel merger, and knows they have to keep Sprint happy. Things will change, as Chris has said, they already are changing.
We'll see what this means for competition amongst Sprint models. I believe there are great things afoot. More than that, I cannot say.

Anybody seen the new Motorolas that popped up on Phonescoop? You can just look at the plastic in the pictures and tell how superior they are to, say, Verizon's V710 and V265. I don't understand why the phones can't be Nextel-durable across the board.

Speaking of Phonescoop, that Samsung SGH-E730 looks pretty damn nice.
Yeah, I know, Motorola thread and I sound like Tuo. Sorry.

Personally, I love the V600 series. The highly rated V635 would be my obvious choice if I was with a GSM carrier. The best I can hope for from Motorola for Sprint is a CDMA RAZR. That would make a nice christmas present.

motorola phones tend to be filled with bugs when they first come out... im glad sprint doesnt offer many because i probably wouldnt buy them anyway unless they really stood out... ill stick with sanyo, samsung, nokia, and toshiba (if they ever come out with another US CDMA phone)

I use my friends nextel's as footballs and they still work fine. U drop sprint ones out of ur pocket and it is done for. There might be a bit to be learned there. Other than that tho I hate all motorollas because, like most everyone else here, I like the small (compared to the old nextel bricks) feature packed ones others put out. Death to the RAZR its everywhere now

That would make a nice christmas present. The V600 series was always my favorite Motorola phone. Can't understand why they won't bring it to the CDMA side of things, but yeah, their best bet is the Razr. Not sure if Sprint's even getting it, but the Verizon version will purportedly have EV-DO.

i wonder if sony ericsson will ever re enter the CDMA world... or if other companies such as NEC will ever make CDMA phones

theres actually probally a good chance of that happening since verizon requires the use of an antenna and the razr has an intenna, just something to ponder

apparently they dont require that anymore bc they just released a samsung (n330 i think?) that has an intenna

Not to mention Verizon releasing the extenna-less a970, their version of Sprint's a940. There is already a Razr V3 being worked on for Verizon, there's no question of this. The question is whether or not Sprint will get one sometime down the road.

Motorola makes good walkie talkie's but their phones are quite lacking. the v600 wasn't horrible but it's camera was. i have yet to see a good camera from the motorola camp.

Well I still dont fully understand the Motorola-love that always seems so strong. Maybe its the special spot that the StarTac has in every's heart.

Motorola will always have a loyal following, just like Apple. They've set so many trends and have created the path that the industry has taken so many times. I mean, they did create the cell phone afterall. Then hits like the Startac and V60 which remained strong for generations (was there anything messing with the Startac in its day?). Couple that with the fact that Moto still remains relevant even today and you've got the makings of a legend. Being legendary comes with people being willing to overlook your mistakes, no matter how great or small.

06-26-2005, 01:42 AM
Ill give you that one. They really were the champion with the various StarTacs until Nokia came along with their 6160 (?) I believe. That and then the one that had the removable faceplates that everyone and their grandmother had (I am not exagerrating there, it was sickening actually how many people had that phone).
CoreyTheGent
06-26-2005, 01:46 AM
LOL, you're right about that. When Nokia first blew up with the 6000 series, I honestly believe that everyone in America had that phone. Even my parents had them. And everyone was playing Snake on it, like it was the most amazing thing on the planet.
Nokia came along and offered a more efficient product at a cheaper price. The same thing happened with LG at Verizon. There's no excuses that can be made for Motorola's sake when it comes to these facts. All I can say is that it certainly wouldn't have happened under my watch.
edit: On a sidenote, even as Motorola's marketshare and relevance were declining, they still remained relevant and hot with the introduction of the V60 series. That was the phone that blew me away, I liked it even more than the Startac. It was known as the "Mercedes of cell phones" at all the Verizon stores. But its pricetag didn't enabled it to help where Motorola needed it most.

From what I remember, dont you have a nice watch?
jschu22
06-26-2005, 01:51 AM
Yeah, the v60 was cool, but I certainly am getting tired of that old piece as well.
CoreyTheGent
06-26-2005, 01:54 AM
I've got about 15 nice watches, actually. Since I stopped my cell phone binge, I was able to divert all of that money into watches. I'm just as picky and anal there too, however, so I rarely find one that I want (with the price to match).
I don't think I could ever get tired of the V60. What I am tired of are Verizon's obese versions, the V60p/V60s/V65p, etc. I'd give anything to have a variant of the V60v already, but apparently Verizon doesn't see a need for a slim V60 phone.

Those V60s, no matter the carrier, seem like durable workhorse phones.
Moto, though, at least with the GSM phones, has been so hit and miss lately. It seems like with the low and mid range phones, if you get a good handset right off the bat, you're lucky. High end models like the RAZR and the v600 series seem to have better QC, with better build and less buggy out of the box.
The only thing I dislike about Moto phones right now is the fact I can't assign a different ringer for text messages. I just want it to vibrate when I get a text message.
Anyway, it would be nice if Moto made more phones for Sprint and offered phones like the v635. But, that Moto e815 (I think that's the model number) looks hot. I think that's the update to the v710. And the CDMA version of the RAZR may come out by year's end, IIRC reading that on engadget or gizmodo in the past couple days.
Not only are there not enough Moto phones for the CDMA world stateside, there aren't enough Nokias. But, that should change by year's end, as well. Come the holidays, there will be some smokin' hot phones out ...

After working for AT&T Wireless (TDMA) I don't think I like Motorola phones much. Those things were more trouble than all the Nokias and Ericssons combined... you could tell the moment you picked up the line if someone was on a Motorola phone... they would be cutting in and out like crazy.
Out of the thousands of calls I got working at AT&T, I honestly cannot remember one person call in and rave about loving their Motorola... and V60s were the worst. Seemed like more had snapped off antennas than not!
Personally, I doubt I'd be interested if a Motorola came to the Sprint lineup. If they can't figure out how to make a good TDMA phone, which I understand is a much simpler technology, how can I expect good things out of them with CDMA?
