When PCS and Nextel merge, will their networks be one and the same so my coverage gets even better? Will I need to get a new PCS phone to use both networks since Nextel and PCS use different wireless technologies ?

you will not need a new phone immediately after the merger...it is going to take some time for them to integrate the networks...the actual merger date is just a financial thing, nothing to do with the technological aspects of merging these two companies...
btw, there are a million threads that will probably answer a lot of your questions on the merger in the Sprint-Nextel section of the forum...click on forum in the top blue bar and then scroll down to the section I mentioned...it will save you a lot of flaming in this thread...
