The phone is expected to be available Q2 of 2005. There is no official carrier announcement, but we assume it will be available from Verizon Wireless.

yeah, fcc HAS to approve any phones that theoretically enter the US and use US airwaves.

The Samsung a940 is basically the same thing. And its heading for Sprint.
Edit: Tuolumne's pointless thread about the a940 can be found here: http://www.sprintusers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=66847

I've been in the UK for the past 4 weeks (*shakes fist at GSM!*) And the phones they have here are light-years ahead of those in the USA. (Not to mention Japan.. seesh!)
Quite a few of my friends have a Samsung D500 - its a slider phone with 128MB of internal memory AND bluetooth. MP3 ringtones and all this other stuff -- its nuts!
And they were free on contract here... And you get per-second billing too

niiiiiiiiiiice! Yeah, that's definately Korean I'm seeing on those buttons ;)
It looks absolutely identical to the D500's here (save for the Korean of course...) -- I do hope that we get newer phones like that soon... I feel so left behind with my paltry *polyphonic* phone. lol

First, regarding FCC approval and timing of phone releases: it has been my observation that it can take as long as a year for Verizon to release something (and I've noticed Cingular is this way, too with a few handsets), so the Sprint version could very well show up six months before Verizon ever sees it.
With Sprint, I've observed that generally (though there are obviously exceptions Samsung i550 and SE T608 spring to mind) once a phone receives FCC approval, it is 30-60 days away from release.
As for European phones being more advanced ... there is an extensive 3G network already in place and the technology standard is GSM. I won't try and explain all the reasons because I don't know them all and what I do know is hard to explain. Essentially, they gots their shyte together over there.
Of course, if you had T-Mo, you could import the D500 for about $300, I think, depending on where you get it ... I may just try T-Mo in six months when my contract is up and get my other phones unlocked ... lol. I'm such a phone junkie.

$500 deposits? Oh no, I'll take my CDMA EV-DO thank you very much. It's my opinion that while we (USA) may suck now, once Sprint and Nextel really get this thing going, we will be the greatest.
No one in the world has iDen, USA is the only one. I'll be happy with an a940 for along time. Long enough for those iDen/CDMA phones, which will be the hottest things on the market. Think about it: all the companies are pushing PTT (push to talk) while nextel has the VERY best version; Direct Connect.
Just wait, Cingular is rolling out HSDPA before Korea. Sprint's even planning for the next version of EV-DO. USA won't be the backwater for long. We will be leading the way, just you watch!

Europe is not all roses. Their phone rates are MUCH higher than ours. Land line rates are usually twice or more than rates here and cell rates seem to follow that trend.
And the roaming situation is absurd. GSM allows them to roam all over Europe, but roaming rates are similar to the situation we had in the States 10 to 15 years ago. If I take my Orange UK based cell to France I pay three times my "home" rate, even though I roam on Orange France.
SMS is more popular in Europe for the simple reason that it's substantially cheaper than a voice call.
They do have tons of different phones available - I've seen people switch phones (and SIMs) to go out in the evening.

Actually, I must disagree that European rates are higher than in the US.
All cell phones here are billed per-second, instead of round-up to the next minute. So, if you talk for 30 seconds, you pay for 30 seconds. Most of my friends are on Orange - those that are on Pay-As-You-Go (prepaid) pay £0.20/min for a call to the USA (minimum charge £0.05) - So if I talk for 30 seconds, I pay £0.10. Yes, SMSes are cheaper, averaging about £0.15/ea I think -- that's a 45 second phone call -- I might be able to say more than 160 characters in 45 seconds than I would in an SMS.
(Granted there are contract plans where you get a bundle, say 100 or 200 SMSes for a set price -- and that price is usually quite a bit lower than £0.15/ea)
The same is for contract plans. Yes, you do get less minutes overall, but you get all the minutes you pay for. And when you consider how many calls you end at 2 minutes and 2 seconds that get billed as 3 minutes... That can add up to some serious time.
Furthermore, as I recall - Sprint PCS had the highest ARPU (Average Revenue Per User) of any other cell phone company in the world. http://networks.silicon.com/mobile/0,39024665,39128259,00.htm
Sprint was getting $700 annually per user (revenue that is) - according to the article that is "almost twice what Western European operators were making in the corresponding period."

I dunno bout that... in my observation when Sanyos are approved they're a couple months away, but Samsungs are more than a few months away be4 they're released. But every phone is different so it might just be coincidence in some cases.

I'm really not into the swivel screens, I see so many come back because the damn screw that holds the screen portion comes loose and the screen wobbles around. Besides, what is the point of being able to swivel the screen around, I feel it is a concept that should be retired, that is my opinion though. :)

Europe is not all roses.
Well, yeah. I certainly didn't say that Europe is the best place to have a phone. I was just sorta explaining in a half-arsed way why they have more advanced phones than we do.
As to the way the cell phone networks are managed, that's a whole other ball of wax. There is no perfect cell phone situation.
And I am aware of the fact that land line prices are dramatically higher. That's why there are countries in Europe where there are 2 to 1 ratios of cell phones to people. That's also why there's a technology standard and the 3G network is more expansive.

Yeah, there are exceptions ... like the Samsung i550, which was cancelled altogether. And, em, 30-60 days does cover one-two months. Heh. The more advanced the phones get, the longer they take to get out, it seems ... so a 5600 took a while, but the 8200 didn't take nearly as long, for example.
I speaking in broad general terms. I'm not all that picky about the details as the point being that Sprint generally gets phones out faster than Verizon.

Your point is well made. When you look at it that way my overall UK bill is substantially lower per month. The per minute cost is indeed higher than I pay on Sprint or Verizon, but I don't pay in the months I don't use the phone. Europe has much better Pay as You Go plans.
I am getting killed on data. £4 for 4MB. A little less on the monthly plans, but nothing like Vision.

It's $1.75 (or so) to 1 GBP. Better than in March when it was $1.92.
Edit: That's about $7 for 4MB of data transfer. I typically use about .75MB / day getting email, etc on my Treo.
