I found A treo 650 the other day, and was extatic since I am a sprint user, however when I tried to activate it I was told that the phone was reported lost/stolen and that there was "nothing" that could be done with the phone. Now I know that lockline takes old sprint phone and refurbishes them and thus turns them around for customer use, so there must infact be some way to have the phone activated or something of the sort from there end, I was just wondering if there is anything I can do to use the phone or if I sell it if there's anything someone who buy's it from me can do?

:frustrate I dunno, when I find your stolen car in perfect condition, you let me know what you'd like for me to do with it:

Sell it/part it out

or return it to you

ok, once people start writing there contact info on their treo's then i'll start returning them...

First off how would u propose that I go about finding the owner of the phone? Maybe i should just post up sign all over the city of boston and see how many honest people responde to actually having lost their treo. Second the phone has already been reported Lost, so (according to everything i have been reading on this site before I posted) there's no way the owner would get the phone back anyways since lockline would keep it, that is asumming that I could even finding the owner.

In the mean time I dont see the point of posting stuff on these fourms if it's not helping to answer the question. This is not my first time posting stuff in a web fourm be for but this is my first time responding to people who post stupid response to honest question. If i wanted to be a "JERK" I could have just listed it for sale to any unsuspecting buyer and sold it. Instead i'm here posting this message to see if anyone can help me.

ahhh yes, the canned response that we're being jerks for not helping an innocent finder of lost goods utilize a phone.

imagine losing a $500 piece of elecronics and think about how you would feel if you no one tried to look for you (going throught the phone's phonebook, dropping it off at a local sprint store). now think of the joy of getting that phone back. get the picture?

if you don't see why people frown on fraud and trying to work around things that are there to prevent illegal use, then just go back to those other forums you supposedly frequent and tell them all about how lame we all are here...because i simply don't give a frog's fat ass what you think.

Can't you just look up the number that the phone is programmed with and call it? You should get intouch with the owner then.

Alright, let's be logical about this. You have some options.

First and best option (which 99.998% of people here will suggest): If you're in Boston, take it to the Sprint store. There are plenty around. YOU don't need to know who it belongs to. THEY will look up the number / esn and contact the owner for you. Simple and painless. No need to try to make a buck off of someone elses misfortune. You WILL be and feel like a better person for what you did.

My last paragraph in one word? Karma.

The other (dishonest) options? Keep the stolen property or re sell the stolen property and possibly be charged with a felony. You choose, Beavis.

Why did you recieve the responses you did? Because this question constantly gets asked in these forums. Do a :search: and you would have found the same response to everyone elses silly question just like yours.

like curtiss said, go through the person's phonebook and call one of their friends. i'm sure you can get in touch with one of em' and give the phone back to its owner. can't really do anything with it anyway since it's reported stolen.

no... i agree with you completely, I'd be pissed if i lost me treo. However you are saying this in the confidence of the general public. Like i said and you to can try it urself post that you have found a lost treo or anything of value for that matter and see how many people to whom the item does not belong attempt to reclam it. I fould the phone and have tryed the make an ernest attempt to find the owner or return the phone no avail, (owner info and other such things that would give clues as to the owners identity such as number like HOME, MOM, DAD, anything of the sort where absent) anyway i have done my part, for you to asumme that I have done something Illegal is unfair and childish in my eyes. At this point it make no diffenernce I have the phone and was merely wondering if there is anything I can do with it. If your not willing to help me out then that is fine I just ask that you refrain from making comments that presuppose that you have prior/more information concerning the situation then you really do.

Anyways, if you dont have anything helpful to say concerning this matter SCREW YOU.

otherwise thank you in advance for any incite one might have in helping me.

I have a Treo 650 in my hands, and by the way, it happens to be mine. Here is exactly how to find the rightful owner, step by step.

1. Power on screen by pressing red phone button.
2. Turn of keyboard lock by immediately pressing the center key in the five-way.
3. Press the green phone key.
4. Press the menu key (the key opposite of the one that has a house on it)
5. Use the five-way to scroll to the Options tab.
6. Use the five-way to scroll down to Phone Info.
7. Call the number listed under Phone Number.

If for some odd reason they don't have another phone and their service is temporarily shut off, here's another step by step method to get in touch with it's owner.

1. Repeat steps one and two to power up the screen and turn of the keyguard.
2. Press the key that has a house on it.
3. Look to see if you are in the "All" tab. If not, continue to press the button with a house on it until you are on the "All" tab.
4. Use the five-way to scroll down to Versamail.
5. Press the center key.
6. Press the menu key.
7. Use the five-way to scroll to Accounts and then down to Account Setup.
8. Highlight any of their email accounts and click on Edit.
9. Click on next twice.

THE PERSON'S EMAIL ADDRESS WILL BE DISPAYED ON THE SCREEN. SEND THEM AN EMAIL.

You haven't taken all the necessary steps to find its rightful owner, so I thought I'd help you out. There should be a wealth of knowledge on anybody's Treo.

Do the right thing and contact this person. If I lost my Treo and someone returned it, I'd probably give them a hundred dollars.

Honestly, everyone needs to chill out. He found a phone. It's not his DUTY to turn it over. ****in ****, I know 90% of the people in the world wouldn't. Welcome to reality. This isn't the 50s for god's sake. Don't chew him out for not returning it. If you don't want to help him, then don't. And what was this Karma ****? What if this is karma coming around to him? He finds a phone, his lucky day. Whatever. I don't know for sure what I would do if I found the phone, but I am really sick of people jumping on someone else for being up front. Half of you that are getting pissed at him would probably take the phone and try to keep it for yourselves too. The world is far from perfect, don't try to idealize it. You can't force your idealized vision upon everyone, well, unless your George Bush...lol but that's an entirely different problem.

Drop it off at any Sprint store.

If you want to keep it you have a "PDA", period. You will never be able to use it as a phone.

I've found lost purses, lost phones, etc. I retrun them, because even if I could use them or not, there is a karma thing, and also how would I feel if I lost something. Personally if it were me, I'd try and either find the owner by looking up their number and/or returning it to the Sprint store, and let them take care of it. If anything, it'd go back into the lockline/sprint stock, so that it could be a refurb. Keeps our insurance down.

There you go. He said it best.
Also, I am sure there is a number in that phonebook of that Treo that could lend some clues or help in finding the owner.

Phone ESN reported lost/stolen. There is nothing you can do about it. When they refurb phones, they change the ESN. Then that changes the Catalog number of the phone. Its the same reason that Sprint won't change the color of my wife's 8200. I wanted to pay to have it re-cased with a different color, and they can't because the ESN is assigned to a GREEN 8200. Once Sprint refurbs the phone, it will change the ESN, catalog # and the description will now be "TREO 650 Refurb"

hmmm....let's see....you have been notified that the phone you are in possession of was reported as stolen, but yet you have kept it. That is the first problem. I won't even go into the other legal issues. Return the phone to Sprint. At least the rightful owner will get it back.

What is childish is finding something of personal and monetary value, which you know belongs to someone else, where the owner is easily identified, and yet you isn't on rationalizng keeping it.

By the way good luck selling it on ebay. you are going to have to give the serial number to any buyer, who in turn will cheeck with Sprint first.

So Alrightly then....
If Lockline replaced a lost or stolen
phone then who does the phone now belong too...

and if they choose to refurbish it and then send it out and not charge me $75
instead of $50
which use to be $35

then yeah I would really appreciate you giving
the phone to a sprint store so they won't raise
our deductible to $75 for a legit cliam.

:)

That about sums it up.

The phone's serial number (ESN) is locked in Lost / Stolen status, so it's useless as a phone.

The only ways it will be unlocked are:
1) If the rightful owner brings it into a Sprint store with proper ID and requests it to be turned on (most common)
2) Sprint's fraud department releases it (almost impossible to do without the rightful owner)
3) Sprint / Lock/Line releases it AFTER it is refurbished.

I won't preach what you should or shourlnd't do, but if you want to try to get it back to the owner, take it to a Sprint store, if you want, leave your information and *maybe* good karma will be rewarded by the owner.

If you want to keep it, you'll have a PDA that is just a PDA and does not have any warranty (and you'll have to get the charger and sync cable on your own).

Funny, I once found a phone and my first instinct was to dial the last number dialed. Informed them of all my contact info for them to reach me and I would keep the phone until I get out of work (so that they could pick it up during the allotted time) and after that i'll give it in to the lost and found (unless they request from me otherwise).

A lady stole my phone once... Told me she found it and would give it back for $20.... I told her to keep it as I wasn't going to pay for having my phone stolen.

now for a real answer to your question. there is a 6 month waiting period on that phone. if you wait 6 months you will be able to activate it. i just did that ith a phone that i lost and then found. a 650 actually and it works perfectly.... just wait 6 months and then call up *2 and say you want to switch ESN's on your account to your old phone and they will.

You already know how to find the owner. But if you couldn't, Call Sprint at 888-211-4727 and tell them the ID numbers under the battery. They ought to be willing to give the owner a message from you to get in touch with you to talk about his Treo. I have one and would be happy to do whatever to be in touch with you to get a lost Treo back, even if I might have to offer a reward for it. When I lost my phone and had to deal with Lockline, they told me I'd have to return the lost phone to them, if I found it. Sprint told me I could keep it and use it because from their point of view, I am still its owner. You or anyone you sold it to could not use it as a phone, but the owner might be able to. It's worth more to the owner than anyone else. Sell it back to him (i.e. negotiate a reward.) Then go online check out all the Treo prices and promotions. You might want to buy a new one with the reward money. Can anyone confirm from personal experience that the original owner is allowed to use a lost/returned Treo as a phone, or does Lockline become the new owner after they have replaced it???

To answer your questions, actually, you can activate phones that are even lost/stolen through customer service. Depending on the situation. If it's linked to somebody else's account and u want to activate it, i would tell you to take it to a sprint store. If it's linked to your account and u found it, it's your phone so i would activate it for you. CS can activate any phone to be honest with you. Most people in CS don't know how to do it though. But the right thing to do is to take it to a sprint store. The people with the question about the lockline ownership thing- actually, the phone is your phone and lockline shouldn't have a claim on it if u find it. But lockline asks you to send the phone back in so they can mark it as refurbished and change the ESN since it was claimed as being lost or stolen. BUT ALL IN ALL give the phone up, there will be better phones that will come your way...

This is my first post on this site, so take it easy on me. I just purchased a treo 650 on ebay, but when I tried to get it turned on, at a sprint store, I was told that the esn on my phone is in use on another phone. What should I do?

P.S.

I don't know if this phone was lost or reported stolen by someone else, but bofore going to a sprint store I tried to activate the phone through customer service at *2, we went through the whole process without a hitch and the phone should have been activated in about 4 hours. I went to a sprint store the next day and they told me that the esn was in use, but they did not ask for the phone or where I got it from. I recieved the phone with all the accessories minus the palm cd, and the phone was listed on ebay as being used.

P.S.S.

Two days after my attempt to turn the phone on I was checking the phone info screen and noticed that the phone has my phone number in it, but the PCS Vision Username in not mine. NOTE: when I first recieved the phone all fields were blank, and I could tell that " the previous owner " had performed a hard reset on the phone.

WHAT SHOULD I DO NOW!!!

Like i said and you to can try it urself post that you have found a lost treo or anything of value for that matter and see how many people to whom the item does not belong attempt to reclam it. .

Here is a perfect example of why society is going down the drain. The classical "Everyone is doing it (theft) so why be honest?" BullSh*t.

So what if you get 300 hundred calls from scumbags claiming it is theirs? You are one of them Sir for beating them to it.

As many have said, You could have taken the phone to a Sprint store and they would have taken care of returning it to the owner as it is after all, a Sprint phone with sprint information only they have access to.

This is amazing to me how low some people can go and still feel justified and righteous - truely disgusting.

You Know My Husband Lost His Wallet Last Year In California When We Went For Vacation, We Had All Our Credit Cards In There, Bank Cards, Id, Concealed Wepaon Licence Blue Card For His Gun Everything!! Including Money.. Left It At A Gas Station, And 1 Month Later The Person Who Found It, Contacted The The Cfn Fleet Gas Station He Didnt Want To Leave The Wallet With Them As He Didnt Trust Teh, He Got A Hold Of My Husbands Mother As She Owned The Gas Card In His Wallet, The Person Who Found The Wallet Called Us And Said He Found It And Wanted To Send It Back I Told Him Whatever Money We Had In There Like $600 Take Half And Return The Wallet The Card On There Were More Important, He Didnt Wanna Take Money Or Half From Us, So He Said He Was Gonna Take $10- For The Shipping Of The Wallet, Told Us He Didnt Need Money He Owned His Own Business He Has Previously Lost His Wallet Before So He Knows How It Feels, Very Nice Honest Man!! That Was June 2004 Anyways, The Other Day August 8 2005 We Were At Grocery Store And My Husband Again, Forgot His Wallet On The Shopping Cart, No Luck All Day We Canceleed Our Card Again!!! The Next Day I Called The Grocery Store, Someone Returned It Untoched With Everything In It... You See.. We Have Always Done Good Things To People, So The Good Karma Comes Back To Us.. If We Found Someones Wallet In It With $$$ And Lots Of It... Will Have To Return It To The Owner... You Know Good Things Happen To Good People... And Bad Karma Happens To Bad People.. Which Route You Wanna Take???

That is great that you have had such good luck.

When I was a teenager working at a large Mall in California, I cannot tell you how many things I found (purses, wallets, this and that) to which I always returned to the security station. I found things while working and while not working there. Always returning what I found to the security station.

On several occasions, the owners of the lost items were right there making a report as I was returning their lost stuff. I would say that 95% of the time, the owners never offered me any kind of reward nor even had the decency to thank me. Nothing! It was an amazing experience for me, specially at a young age, seeing how ungrateful people were.

3 weeks ago, my father lost his Sprint VM4050 phone at a Home Depot store. I gave him that phone as a present last year. Nobody has returned the phone.

Given my track record "Karma", I should have NO guilt keeping the next item I find, but I wont do it because I don't believe in going down to the level of these low lifers like the OP. Reading the OP "moral" views of how he perceives life is truely disgusting.

Perod.

Well, well, well, what is it with you people? Why are you all so hell bent on believing everyone is a thief? Just because you find something, be it of value or not, and you don't return it does not make you a thief. I have read this entire thread, and I don't recall reading of anyone actually stealling, shoplifting, or pick-pocketing anyone for a phone. If they in fact found them, they have every right to and should not be blamed for, doing whatever they want with what they find. I've lost things in the past and when I did they were just that, LOST. If what I lost was returned to me, I would not only be shocked, I would more than likely give the person that returned them a reward. But in this day and time, I would truly be shocked. Now, back to me, the phone that I have has been taken back to sprint in order to find out who this phone is connected to. This phone is not turned on, and I can't get it turned on, when I talked to sprint about it they told me that this phone is connected to a company called " foxhollow technologies ", now when I bought this phone on ebay I knew it was coming from somewhere back east, I live in AZ. I just found this out today and I'm currently on line looking for this place. So, since you've found someone who is trying to do the right thing, why not stop all the preaching and help me out.

Ah, were you just born yesterday? Finding something that does not belong to you and keeping it can certainly implicate you both morally and legally.

If you find a wallet full of money that belongs to a corpse in an alley and you keep the wallet, you are now implicated in a possible murder situation if the authorities trace the wallet back back to you. The examples are endless.

Perfect example of how our educational system is failing us when I read posts like yours... :indiff:

Yeah, you say that as if you know someone that's happened to, when in REALLITY you don't and furthermore you probably don't know anyone who knows someone else that this could of possibly happened to. You were probably sitting down watching a rerun of NYPD Blue when you wrote such a bass-ackward statement. And yet again after all your mummbling and so-called moral teachings I have yet to read any helpful, potentialy useful, or worthy infomation from you what so ever.

Anybody else out there ?

I have to say that if i found a treo, i'd probably return it, but ofcourse i already have one. But on the other hand if i ever lost mine (which would be very unlikely b/c if you're carrying a 500+ dollar phone that you paid for, you're gonna be freaking careful with it) i wouldn't expect to get it back, that is why the have insurance. You can't expect someone to go "oh look, a treo! i should spend lots of time and effort to find its owner". Maybe in a perfect world. Basically the only way you guys would give this guy some slack was if he picked it up and spent time and money to take it to a sprint store, if he keeps it, hes an ass, if he left it on the ground, he'd be an ass. Why is this guy an ass because he happened to see a phone someone left?

But seriously, just take it to a sprint store and be done with it, a treo without the phone capabilities just isn't a treo. Heres what you could do, go put the phone back directly where you found it, then when the next person comes in here to ask us how to use it, we can bash him some too.

KEEP A SAFE EYE ON YOUR TREO AT ALL TIMES!

As a Treo 650 user I would want you to turn it in to a Sprint store so they could find me. I am really enjoying mine, would miss it a lot if it were lost/STOLEN, and would want to get it back from Sprint. Please try to return it to a Sprint store.

I'm sorry, but I think we have strayed too far from the the issue. I did not find this phone. I bought this phone under what I thought was honest intention. I did not find out until after I bought it, upon an attempt to get the phone turned on that it might be stolen. This is why I am trying to find the previous owner. The only info that I have so far is his pcs vision user name, I have sent 3 emails to this address so far with no response yet. Although it may come down to it, I have no intention of just turning this phone over to a sprint store. At least not until I get the facts of the matter sorted out.

Oh my, not only were you born yesterday, but a know it all too. Kid, I am probably old enough to be your dad.

Like I said, the examples are endless and if you cannot think of any, your age will really show.

Honest intention? You bought a phone without checking the ESN with Sprint first? And how old are you? Oh yes, I have this invisible bridge I want to sell you...

This reminds me of the kid who buys a $1,700.00 plus car stereo for $10 bucks from an unknow person selling off the back of his car and it does not occur to him for one minute that maybe, just maybe that stereo is stolen and hot.

I got a good laugh reading this.

Fu#$% it, if I find one I keep it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :hee:
I've never lost a phone, neither I plan to, having also a treo 650. Why would I keep it you ask? Just for parts for mine. Another thing, that is why you have insurance. If you have data in your phone and never back it up, you are asking for trouble. I learned this the hard way.

Press the green "phone" button and it should turn the phone on. Press the center key to unlock. You should be at the phone menu. Press the "Menu" button which is the button above the mail icon. Use the center navigation wheel by pressing right twice to highlight "options" and then use the down navigation wheel to go down to "phone info". On that menu it should list the phone number of the phone. If the person has reported the phone lost or stolen, the number should work when dialing it from a working phone and you will be able to give the Treo back to the person who may have some information on the phone that they need. If the phone has no juice, if you take it by a Sprint PCS store and ask to borrow a charger to look up the info, they would be more than happy to lend you one.

I know I would be happy if someone returned it especialy if I had lost it before syncing and would probably offer the person who returned it to me some sort of reward, cash or other wise something else.
