Since my phone is dead, and Sprint isn't doing a deal for me to get a new one, I am considering Verizon.

Rumor is that Verizon has the best coverage, but my experience calling Verizon people has been terrible for last 6 months -- frequently all circuits busy and my calls to Verizon people drop a LOT lately.

Thoughts from PCS people with Verizon experience?

Verizon seems to be the number one choice for users where I live. I've heard no complaints from my friends and co-workers that use the service. I even think about switching to Verizon for two reasons: 1. Sprints reception is pretty crappy where I live 2. Everyone I know has it (except for a handful of people) and I can take advantage of the IN calling.

Where in the northeast are you wanting to use the service?

Mostly New York City and Washington DC.

Mostly New York City and Washington DC.

I live about 20 minutes south of the Canadian border, so if you ever move this far north... Verizon is great. :p

Verizon is good in NYC, as is Sprint...I personally use Sprint...I had Verizon before and found their customer service 10 times worse than Sprints...It got so bad I dumped Verizon for DSL, home phone and cell phone all in one day...I have everything with Sprint now and could not be happier...

Verizon is cool. They've treated us pretty well over the past four years. Only problem is that now that we've moved into the country, we get lucky if we can hold a call longer than one minute with Verizon phones. Also, all of my friends have Sprint, so I would need less minutes and they get REALLY good reception at my house (there's a Sprint tower right down the road).

My GF has vzw, and reception is great on cape cod, tho sprint has better coverage by a lil bit

Wow lots of varying opinions on Verizon! :)

It does seem like Verizon's quality of service has gone down, while Sprint PCS' performance has increased (i.e. dropping calls and not enough circuits).

I was a Verizon customer from ~1994 to 2002 in the Boston area. First with analog and later with digital service.

- Verizon has good coverage in the Greater Boston area.
- Verizon NEVER gave me any discounts on phones (I bought 4 phones from them, 2 lines, upgraded twice).
- Verizon NEVER gave me any discounts on service based on longevity, etc. All bills were on "auto pay" by charge card, so they were never late.
- Verizon switches your call from tower to tower based on load balancing. Problem is that if you are in a marginal area you will usually lose the call as they don't check first to ensure that the signal is strong enough from the tower they are switching you to before doing the switch.
- The dropped calls drove me nuts. So I left them in 2002 for AT&T.
- Verizon also had a policy of "auto rollover" of your contract. If YOU didn't notify them within a 30 day window of your intent NOT to renew your contract, they automatically renewed you with an ETF! This is nasty if you've been a customer for 5 or more years!

YMMV
