I am a long time Sprint PCS user, and I am on one of their old fantastic rentention plans (480min/month, unlimited n/w starting at 8pm, 450 sprint to sprint minutes for $30/month).

My phone is dieing, but I can't get any decent deals from Sprint anymore on phones. Basically I have to up my plan another $15/month to get what I get now and get a free phone. Which translates into just buying the phone myself rather than increasing my monthly fee.

Has Sprint quit the retention plan business??

no BUT to qualify for the rebate requires a 35.00 plan or higher and you are only offered a retention plan if you are calling to cancel your service

I'm pretty sure they have unless a customer really pushes it, which really doesn't speak well of them.

When my first plan expired, they gave me more minutes and 8pm weeknights which was great. Then when this plan expired, I decided to go with another plan with Vision, or add vision to my current plan. Well, for that I needed a new phone, and to get a new phone, you have to get a new plan (Sprint never misses an opportunity to make money). I called and tried to work a new plan the same as I had and was told no. I asked what they could do for me and was told I could choose from the regular plans and that was it. I asked "Does me being a 5+ year customer of sprint mean nothing, and you are going to treat me like Joe Newuser who has never been with Sprint before?" and was told "Yes" and "Sorry, I can't do anything".

Money > Customer to Sprint. But they currently are the cheapest so you get what you pay for.

If I was to a a buck for every time Sprint told me that, I would be a multi millionaire.

Yes, they will say that - click the phone and try again, after a few months of no sucess, rest a month or two and resume. Never give up.

Trust me. :)

He speaks the truth. Unfortunately, the codes needed to give the rebates are under lock and key it seems. Be nice though :)

Require a $35/mo plan to be approved.

It's a system issue, nothing any cust serv rep can change period. You would have to talk to someone much higher up the ladder to have Sprint change their policy. If you do not have a plan of $35 or more per month your rebate will not be approved, period.

As a 5.5-yr Sprint customer, with no rebates ever filed, no retention plan ever requested, no upgrade ever done (still on original phone), how likely would it be that I could get a decent deal? Still have the 5.5-yr old phone and looking to upgrade. Have a low-end plan now, and not interested in upgrading plan, but am looking at other vendors. Would that be enough for them to offer a deal, or would they insist on a 2-yr commitment?

I feel your pain. I'm also a 5+ year customer. I at least have had a retention plan because of a snaffu back in January of 2003. I just moved to a new area, so I called asking for a new phone number and they informed me that I would need to start a new contract to do that, and NO I couldn't get the plan I already have to switch. They want to lump me into a Fair and Flexible plan with every other newcomer wanting a free phone instead of my current Free and Clear plan. I still haven't resolved this but when I do it will be updated on this topic:

Good luck.

Are you sure? I didn't call to cancel my service when I got my retention plan. I just simply said I'd like more minutes. *shrugs*

Some reps are sticklers and won't even take time to offer retention plans unless you threaten to cancel. But somewill offer it to you. Policy states not to offer unless you want to opt-out, but sometimes you'll get nice reps.
