...the discussion of GPS in cellphones has been raging for some time...welcome to the new millennium...

You can turn it off to everyone else, just not the gummint...the fix is to use a prepaid phone...no ID necessary...

Here's a BS quote from this article:

"Nor are cops explicitly required to obtain a judicial warrant before compiling a record of where you sneaked off to last Thursday night."

Totally untrue...

I received two answers from Law Enforcement officers...the first deals with ordinary citizens, the second directly addresses mrlifter's statement:

I can go to a website and pay like $10 or $20 a month and track my wife's phone via GPS and I don't need a warrant. But I would bet if they wanted something like that to stick in court regarding 4th amendment violations it would behoove them to get one. I know from what I heard the benefit was to find someone via E-911 in case of an emergency.

.....

[Answer to your question is YEs in the light of 9-11 and the onset of this technology Law enforcement has been given a little broader boundary to work with around in regards too our rights(EX LEO 16 years)

If you are suspected of a heinous crime without a doubt you will be track, via your gps enabled fone(even if you turn off the GPS).

Is this illegal? against your rights?

if your a criminal then you have no rights, if you dont break the law then why worry about it?

Big brother has many ways of tracking us.............

We are discussing the question here: http://www.worldofgeekz.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7745

What's funny is don't they always say "Innocent until proven guilty in a court of law" ? Well, if you're innocent you still have rights, correct ?

of course, you could turn the phone off when the black helicopters show up

while his may be true, the gov't isnt going to use this on common people. they have the capability to, yes, but honestly why would they waste their time tracking an innocent person when there are plenty of other people out there who arent so innocent who need to be tracked?
i think they should send bin laden a cell phone with E911

It's a feature that regular land lines already have... VOIP lines are getting it too.
As for innocent people.... It's a spectrum... They do also target innocent people.
If you're white american chances are low of being tracked. If an immigrant and Arab (or any other non european nationality) then you'll get tracked.
Innocent until proven guilty.... Hah, riiiiiiight!

Hmm, thats outrageous. Stupid Patriot Act. The law enforcement has been given way too much reach today. I'm not promoting illegal activities, but if they occur in private and away people, let it be.

Oh, I love that service, though. Makes finding places easy. Not really too much to offer as far as reconosance (sp) because its not "live." But a great service. Unfortunately, my house falls under a "grainy" map, not the detailed one.

Oh, and here is my Best Buy:

See what I mean about grainy? I live close to that area, so I don't even have "high-res" :(.
