View Full Version : 3.5mm Headphone Adapter for 5600

I bought this headphone adapter for the 5600. It works great. If you want to use better headphones that have a 3.5mm male connector with the 5600, this adapter works.

If you are looking for some great headphones that you can use while active and that don't fall off your ear, this is what I got-Sony MDR-EX71SL.

Here's an adapter that does the same thing for $4 (albeit without a cord)

I bought that adapter and wish I hadn't. It stinks. I ordered this from Ebay

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=3311&item=6395245650&ssPageName=STORE:PROMOBOX:NEWLIST

I can verify that it works just fine unlike that Ratshack POS.

the reason the radioshack adapter will not work correctly is because it only has 2 conductors that are not in the correct place... the other ones ment for PHONES have 3.

...did you click the link he posted?

The tip has three pieces of metal separated by two plastic insulators, meaning that the link posted is in fact a three conductor adaptor.

As long as it says "stereo to stereo" it should work fine.

I did click the link, then I got up from my desk here at radioshack and picked one up off the wall and plugged it into my 5600 and it only comes out of one ear. You need 3 plastic insulators.

...if the metal parts are the conductors, you are describing a four conductor wire, which would be what Nokia phones used to use...each piece of metal is a conductor, right?

If you need proof, go to the parts drawer and check the tip on what RS explicitly labels three conductor...

You need 3 plastic insulators.I bought one of those and it truly is a piece of junk. If you have the plug in just right it will get stereo, but if you push it all the way in it goes to mono. And if you move your phone at all you lose the stereo. I have one of these - http://www.pocketpctechs.com/detail.asp?Product_ID=PPCPADPT15 - for my 6600. - sheureka

I did say conductor instead of insulator... either way, the one typeRshack sells does not work correctly.

edit: it isn't junk... it just isn't ment for the phone.

lol. guys. phones have 3 conductors. discmans, mp3 players, walkmans, radios...all just need two. one left, one right.

phones use one more for voice (AFAIK). take a look, ones made for phones have one more than ones not made for phones. pennywise is correct. it really doesnt matter exactly how many conductors they might have, just know that phones use one more. thats why the adapter shack sells doesnt work. if u wernt using it on a phone, that adapter would work just fine (albeit it is overpriced)

...if you hold the adaptor pictured with a plug on the end of a cell phone headset, you will re-think that answer.

Nokias are the only ones that used a four-conductor plug...seriously, I'm not making this up...

Pennywise is correct...it's something about the length of the conductors, but they are all three-conductor.

Its funny how my original post included a link to an adapter that works, but the thread turned into an argument over this radio shack adapter that doesn't work. It's like folks on here just love to debate. Anyways, the adapter I recieved is a 4 conductor.

I have tried both this one (24hourdeal.com) and the Seidio. This one ocassionally has an intermittent connection. The Seidio (with gold-plated plug) has been rock solid.

I also have the Seidio and use it with my etymotic earphones and the sound is pristine...I had previously bought an off the shelf adapter from Radio Shack that definitely did not work...they may carry one that does, but the one I got had only the one black stripe and definitely only comes in in mono...if you can all afford $450 phones, spending $10-$15 on the seidio adapter should be a non-issue...take our advice and just get the right adapter the first time around...

:wow:Eureka, Sheureka! That's the adaptor I've been looking for!

Now, just to be sure, the one you linked to is working well for you, and the Radio Shack one is the junk one you're talking about, right?

At the site you linked, there are actually two versions. One is to plug standard 3.5mm stereo headphones into the PPC 6600 for $12.50, and the other version has two female jacks, one for the stereo headphones and the other for standard cellular 2.5mm headsets, with its own answer button, for $15. Which version do you have?

Yes the Moto headphone/ hands free device works pretty well with most any phone with a 2.5mm jack. I do want to get an adapter so that I could use better phone. But then I'd lost the ability to also use the headphone for talkin and hearing people in stereo. Plus the voice pick is very good I never ever have to repaet myself when talkin to anyone. And people even have no trouble hearing me when it's very windy outside.

I carry the smaller one in a little case with my Sony headphones, extra SD cards and WiFi card. I've bought a lot of stuff from ppctechs. Their screen protectors are absolutely the best, and their retractable USB cord is much sturdier than the pieces of junk I've seen at other stores. - sheureka

Okay, I'm going to place an order with them. They have two versions of the screen protector, a non-glare that sounds like it might cause some dimming/color change, and a regular. Which do you use/like?

I'm leaning toward that fancy headphone adaptor they have with the built-in microphone. I'm not going to be wearing my BT headset while listening to the stereo headphones...

I purchased a set of stereo Headphones from sprint that has an adapter with Mic/Mute and push-to-talk on it. It comes with stereo buds and earphones. I checked the sprintpcs website, but I don't see them. They are from sprint though and they work perfectly as you can use the supplied headphones or your own.

That's interesting, I have the same sprint phones and have a problem with the plug not connecting correctly in the phone. If not pushed in far enough its mono and if its pushed all the way in its mono. Must be left out of the phone a little then it is stereo, but if twisted goes out again??

Checked, the connector. Longer than the oem sanyo earphone connector. Plugged all the way in only delievered mono.

Made a small rubber spacer, very thin, to go on connector to keep it from going all the way in, works fine.??

Maybe the ebay ones are seconds or something. Did not come in factory packaging just in a plastic bag. Still a good deal.

I guess if no one else is having a problem with the connector into the phone, it must be something unique to my mm-5600. I don't like these phones as well as the sanyo oem although they sound fine. The earbud have a long wire end which doesn't allow for easy wedging in the ear so they have a tendancy to fall out.

DO NOT BUY FROM THAT EBAY GUY! i bought one from him and got it on time, however it didnt work properly. like a few said above me, if i pushed it all the way in, i would only get mono, i had to literaly hold it out a little to get stereo. if i would move it a bit, it would cut out. so there was no way i could put the phone in my pocket and listen to stereo music. plus, the turbo button did not work. so it took 3 weeks to hear from the guy, and he tells me to ship it back for an exchange. so i did, and its now been 2 months since ive heard from him, no exchange. i filed an ebay claim, but he is no longer registered, and from his feedback, it looks like he just stopped shipping orders and everyone got pissed at him. i filed a paypal claim, and they said the same thing, his account was shut off. so im out of luck.

Yeah but $40 for that is a ripoff. It probably costs them $10 just to get it into the sprint store, then they make a $30 profit. Accessories for pretty much any electronic device are huge money makers for them because people are so willing to spend more than 3-5 times what they are worth. Cables and adapters especially.

I know places like bestbuy and staples pay like $3 for USB cables that they sell for $20.

Let's take that to it's logical extreme...what if all the good ones are overpriced and all the cheap ones are junk? Which do you want to wake up bright and early to for the next two years? :Popcorn2:

Next time I am in Sacramento, I should go by Fry's Electronics...bet they have something high quality that's cheap...

Well, adapters are pretty simple, especially this type of adapter. Even the cheapest stereo plug won't break unless you put an insane amount of stress on it. So long as you don't try to use it as some kind of a murder weapon it will be fine.

Not sure what you mean. We're talking about a threaded peice of metal here, not soap on a rope. There aren't many ways that this thing can possibly break or even wear over time.

The headphones maybe, but not a simple miniplug adapter. You could even submerge it in water for a day, then dry it off, and have it still work fine.
