I am just trying to see why T-mobile charges about 30 bucks a month for their data plan and sprint charges 80 bucks.

Does T-mobile suck that much?

Don't get me wrong, I have been a loyal Sprint customer for almost 7 years and have no intention on leaving, but dang, their data plans are high.

I only need data every once in a blue moon (I tether) but I don't want to lose my service.

I used T-mobile prior to coming to sprint. Never had a problem. Didn't use data. GREAT customer service at Tmobile - they don't outsource so you always get a US rep. Never had a problem - and I can be a handfull. Good plan pricing too. I started with the 39.95 600 anytime minutes and unlimited nights/weekends (9pm), Switched to the 1000 anytime minutes for $39.95 - I dont use my phone durring nights and weekends so I was always going over.

I ultimately left them for sprint due to the phone I wanted (5600) and I am happy with the fair and flexable plan.

But in short I liked T-Moble and would recommend them - they just didn't have any phones I liked.

t-mobile's data is not as fast as Sprint's. that could be part of the price difference.

RCR Wireless News reports that T-mob may not be able to make it on it's own.
Too small and not nearly enough spectrum. They currenty use GPRS for data but not much of a Coverage Footprint. They are struggling to enhance their network with EDGE technology, but are far from doing so at this point.
W-CDMA is not even an available technology as it would require vast more spectrum allocation than they currently have. They were almost no shows in the latest FCC Sponsered Auction for Wireless Spectrum licenses. They have little or no coverage in the US Southeast (read: North and South Carolina). Here's a little more from RCR Wireless New:
Further blighting T-Mobile USA's future is its admitted spectrum shortage, which has prevented the carrier from announcing any plans to launch a wide-area high-speed wireless service. The carrier offers GPRS services across its network and is expected to launch a higher-speed EDGE solution sometime this year. But the carrier lacks the clean spectrum needed for a W-CDMA deployment.

UBS recently noted that T-Mobile USA controlled an average of 26.5 megahertz of spectrum in the nation's top 100 markets, which was significantly below the 40 megahertz controlled by Verizon Wireless, 51 megahertz controlled by a combined Sprint Nextel, and less than half the 57 megahertz controlled by Cingular.

Many industry analysts were surprised that T-Mobile USA was not more aggressive in Auction 58, where spectrum was offered in a number of markets where T-Mobile USA's holdings are either low or non-existent. Some have noted that T-Mobile USA passing on several licenses in North Carolina and South Carolina-where it lacks service-was because the carrier is interested in acquiring regional operator Triton PCS Inc., which has a strong GSM network and footprint in the Southeast.

Others noted that because T-Mobile USA is so spectrally deficient across its entire network, it did not make sense for the carrier to overbid on building up portions of its network and instead save its money for future nationwide spectrum auctions.
Now... does that answer your question? T-mob can come-a-knocking...but I'm not answering!

I don't know about you guys, but T-Mobile Cust service sucked big time to me. I've worked in the customer service industry for over 10 years and had a very bad experience with T-Mobile and left them.

Their voice network in my area is spotty
Their GRPS data network isn't the best (a bit slow), not sure how their Wi-Fi (HotSpot) service is.

Cust service sucks with every provider.

Their GPRS network is just GPRS, not EDGE or anything. So it's slower than Sprint's.

The only objective way to judge CS is how quickly you can gain access to a CS rep, in which case, Cingular is the worst.

(And, subjectively, I've had very few problems with Sprint service)

On the subject of customer service, I have noticed that if your inquery isn't something that need be done quickly, emailing CS is the best route. I have always gotten my issues resolved with Email CS, and even received a few credits from them when a Phone CSR was rude.

I guess its a preference thing...some people live where Tmobile will work best for them...so they dont see it as a bad thing....its best to just get whatever you feel is better

service is all relative, you should go with what works in your area. ppl have differing opinions because they live in different areas. if at all possible ask somebody in your area what they think of the service and base your decisions on that.

I fail to see how after posting such strong results, people still think T-Mobile ca't make it on it's own. But that's just me.

i dont really like t mobile. we just got them here and their service is REALLY spotty. sprint is pretty much the best here in town(we only have sprint, tm, and cingular) so the best choice isnt really hard to figure out.

a friend of mine down in florida is stressing over her next t-mobile bill. guess between all the text messages and AOL IMs she receives, she's way over the 1000 messages she gets per month. i said last night 'there has to be an unlimited SMS option' then spent 20 minutes trolling around their site to find there wasn't one.

i resisted the urge to tell her what my original 10 dollar vision gets me. :deal:

That E720 IS a sexy beast. Almost sexy enough for me to get a cheapo plan with t-mobile. But if i were gonna do somethin like that i would just get a 777 with cingular

It has been available for quite sometime now. I had it when I was with T-Mobile, so your friend is digging her/his own grave by not having it on their plan.

. . . but to add to what you've said, I no longer see it on the t-mo website. Which means that they have probably once again stopped offering it. T-Mobile is really good at switching around and changing the prices of their add-on services. So perhaps your friend can no longer add it to his/her plan. But it used to cost $9.99/month, perhaps she can call into cust service and they will help out with it.

too bad 1 phone wont make or break it

But a lot of times 1 phone can really help, such as the Motorola RAZR with Cingular. Seeing thats it was an exclusive phone just for them, I'm sure they picked up tons of customers for that one.

T-Mo's data plans are not up to speed with Sprint by far, but they definitely do not suck. It depends on what area you are in and what suits you. I see that some people on here complain about their coverage area and customer service, and they are speaking with their opinions for their area only. Because i can be hypeman for T-Mo and let you know that their coverage area and customer service is great down here in Georgia. Only switched to Sprint because everyone else I know has Sprint, so it made since.

T-Mo is probably the best provider in terms of 3G services (pictures, videos, web) next to Sprint, and among the best in terms of prepaid. Hell, I'd probably be with them, too, if they existed here.

IMO, the real advantage to T-mo lies in the fact they carry phones such as Series 60 phones, and the Danger Hiptop (Sidekick.) Cingular doesn't even offer a similar solution to the Sidekick.

T-Mobile's also real good about combined WiFi and cellular data packages.

Still accumulating bandwidth, with no 3G launch date in sight tho.

:flwr: Having just come from TMobile to Sprint, they ONLY thing preventing them from becoming a MAJOR force in the US is their coverage. Also, here where I live, not too many people have them, so having mobile-to-mobile would not be too plausible. Anyway, when I was with them, the customer service was great, the plans were cool, and I had a Motorola V300, which was a pretty cool phone. If I have not moved to another side of town, I would still have them. The part of town I moved to had no coverage, and the reps in the TMo stores down here were aware of it. When I came back to Sprint, TMo did not charge me an ETF since their store reps knew about the area of town I live in having NO coverage even though it shows on their coverage map. However, I am EXTREMELY satisfied with Sprint. :headbang2

Agreed. I too am quite happy with the way Sprint has been treating me as a customer. I have recommended them to many of my friends (partly because I want referral credit [the legit way]. . . hehe). They have given me more than enough credits and free add-ons. Their coverage in my area is great.

But seeing that I live near A-Town (stay down), coverage from all five major providers (VZW, T-Mo, Cingular, Sprint, Nextel) is outstanding. There is so much competition in my area that I guess to compete with others they can offer better services in my area. Here we also have Alltell (regional provider), 2 local providers, and all the sub-providers: Boost Mobile, Virgin Mobile, Net10. So they compete heavily here and i love the benefits. :headbang2
